Do you find the vilification of Margaret Thatcher in some area in bad taste ? Despite what we might think of her she still was someones mother , wife etc..
My niece put a comment on Facebook about burning in hell and I could not let her say that without putting in my views . It really upset me that people could be so cruel to someone not long dead.

I suppose it will finish when some people run out of their supply of 'snide remarks'.

Nonu Wed 08-May-13 14:23:12

When you posted last night about thank heavens , it has finally finished .

It drifted through my mind to remark "well it ain"t over till the fat lady Sings "

It was same old, same old, with the usual suspects. Wish i had the time to look in on a regular basis, but am spening more and more time with ex D H at the hospice as he gets weaker. It's getting to the stage where we all just want it to be over. Thought marital vows ended with the divorce.......?

I'm glad I voted for Toby. smile #mykindofgirl grin

Of course, all Gransnetters are very fragile and tender and need protecting at all costs. hmm

Hope no one is sobbing in a lonely garret because of anything I have said.

Doubt it somehow.

Nonu Tue 07-May-13 17:09:37

Or even mine . shockand horror

Movedalot Tue 07-May-13 16:52:35

elegran your post at 1351. I have been too busy to go on GN for a couple of weeks but am back now so it will probably be my turn this week. It usually is. grin

Of course I might miss it as I am about to go out again!

Jibes are petty and when they are directed at the same person it gets increasing noticeable. No need to stoop so low, let's just have healthy debate and learn about the breadth of opinions we have.

Elegran Tue 07-May-13 15:46:06

Agree with all that, MiceElf

Jibes do get unpleasant to keep reading, though. Let's keep to the facts and opinions and leave them to one side. They contribute nothing at all to the thread except an undercurrent of unpleasantness, about as much fun as an attack of acid regurgitation spoiling a subsequent meal.

Pass the Gaviscon.

Nonu Tue 07-May-13 15:44:14

Crikey , you are on the ball today micelf .

MiceElf Tue 07-May-13 15:40:15

And, indeed, I see that the comment has been deleted.

I constantly wonder why an exchange of opinions about MT in particular has made some forum members so cross that their language has become reminiscent of emotive journalism, rather than addressing the issue.

We have learned, from the biography which quotes her letters, much more about her character and personality as a young woman. This sheds some light on the politician she developed into.

To say that someone is 'banging on about' sheds no light at all on how far a person's experiences and personality when young influences and shapes their later life.

And I do not feel that 'descending into argument' is accurate. Provoking a discussion with different points of view is what I observed.

Neither does the word 'regurgitating' add anything. The word means vomiting and is an unpleasant way to describe anyone's clarification of, or additions to, points previously made.

As for the personal insults against one member, like jibes in the playground, they are best ignored.

Elegran was your last post about Maggie T or Greatnan?

#lostagain

Sel Tue 07-May-13 14:21:27

There were several threads on MT after her death most of which descended into argument. From memory I would have said there were more anti MT than pro by quite a large margin. I think many people were happy to see the back of the nastiness but Greatnan initiated two new threads last week, again about MT. One presumes she enjoyed the arguments and wished to continue in the same vein. Fair enough - I'm quite happy for everyone to regurgitate the same objections and add to them with anything new they find in the biography.

Obviously you're either anti or pro and never the twain shall meet.

Elegran Tue 07-May-13 14:09:50

Anno I find it very interesting that those who are most keen on the sanctity of their own appreciative assessment of a person are also most critical of the adverse assessments by others.

No-one is all bad or all good (except saints and serial sadistic murderers) so there is room for all views of them.

Elegran Tue 07-May-13 14:05:16

We do not refer to other threads, of course, jingle (wouldn't dream of it!) but some people do seem to carry their attitude over from one thread to another.

annodomini Tue 07-May-13 14:04:18

For goodness' sake, we are all entitled to our opinions. To say that you never liked Margaret Thatcher is hardly one of the seven deadly sins. If it is, I am going straight to the burning fiery furnace.

Nonu Tue 07-May-13 14:00:44

That seems about right to me JO8 . !!!
