Turning 70!!

I think you get a free TV licence though! I have three years to go, but the prospect of reaching 70 doesn't bother me in the least. Each generation is living longer, in fact it is predicted that quite a large percentage of us will reach 100, so don't think you are ready to go just yet!

My friend and I are both 70 this year and she confided last night at choir that she has been really down in the dumps about it - and so have I. For me, it is the awareness that the egg-timer is running out ever faster, and the fear of debilitating illness and an unpleasant death.

She agreed and said that she too is very conscious of the limited time she has left. Both my parents lived to 93 so I suppose I have a good chance of another 20 years plus but we agreed that things are creaking and various medical conditions have appeared for both of us. I am normally an optimist but cannot seem to shake off the faint but constant underlying awareness of time running out.

I am sure others must feel like this. How do they cope?

I am 70 this year and I couldn't give a toss one way or the other. I can see no need for any special celebration, or being down about it.

It has taken me exactly as long to get from 69 to 70 as it took me to get from 1 to 2 and every year in between and will continue so until I die. There is nothing any of us can do about it so why think about it.

DD freaked out on her 6th birthday. She wanted to be 5 for ever and ever.

You don't get the free TV licence until you're 75, shysal. I have 2.5 years to go, but the next renewal of the driving licence is coming up in November. What a nuisance!

I feel very fit and healthy at 72 but must admit to sharing that feeling of 'how much longer have I got'? Statistically, I have a good chance of another 25 years, but I want more! I want to see my four great-grandchildren grow up, and all the others that have yet to be born.
I want to see what advances are made in medicine and science.
I do everything I can to remain healthy - diet, exercise, weight, regular check ups , moderate alcohol (I have never smoked) and so far it is working well, with just a modicum of arthritis in my knees which I can walk off every day. I take the minimum dosage of Rampiril to keep my blood pressure in check and take any tests which are offered by the French health service.
I had to renew my UK driving licence at 70 and it is due for another renewal in September, but I am changing to a French licence, which lasts for the rest of my life (well, until I emigrate to New Zealand, where I will have to have an eye test to get a licence).

With 5 yrs to go I don't feel too old at all, until the back starts playing up after I have been standing up for about an hour. Then I start worrying about how mobile I will be by then.

Which is probably one for the hypochondria thread.

I would be quite fit otherwise! If that makes any sense?

I turned 70a few days ago. I'm fine with it, in fact I was looking forward to it oddly enough.

Just got back an hour ago from a few days celebrating in Barcelona.

I think I just feel pleased I've made it this far!

I just turned 69 so I'm getting there, but having had a debilitating illness since the age of 41, what's another year? Just another year.

Well, in my experience 70 is the age when it all starts going downhill. Sorry. But you did ask.

JO8 I must have been an early starter then! I,m 61 and 2/3 and my bits seemed to go down hill rapidly from 60! I am hoping for a slow down, fingers crossed x

It's bound to be different for different individuals. I' m just losing some strength.

I really think anybody who says they do as much at seventy as they did at fifty probably did n' t do much at fifty!
