My DH once phoned a friend who unknown to DH was at a funeral. My DH was appalled because not only did the friend answer but it was his own father's funeral.

I've never been to a funeral where a mobile went off, but I was once at the theatre when it happened.
It took the culprit absolutely ages (rummaging around in her bag) to locate the phone and switch it off. All eyes were on her, and there was indeed a bit of tutting going on.
I hope she felt stupid.

Absent horray for NZ teaching sign language. I didn't know that.

Huge boooo to the parents and their lack of manners.

I can understand one mobile going off. It's easy, especially with heightened emotions, to forget things like turning your phone off. But once one had rung, I would have thought everybody else would have checked theirs were switched off.

Have you noticed young people in the cinema seem to be more interested in checking the messages on their phones and sending texts than actually watching the film?

I think that is disgraceful bikergran and so upsetting for the family and close friends. Given the crises which have been happening with monotonous regularity in my family I like to keep my mobile 'phone with me but would put it on silent for important events.

The other day I set a 'phone alarm for the bread maker to remind me to switch it off. Completely forgot what I had done and went to a PCC meeting. The 'phone on silent doesn't work for alarms so made a mental note not to do this again as it rang noisily during Evening Prayer. Just hope I remember blush

I use my phone all the time a lot.. for texts, emails, google, photos, facebook and GN and occasionally a phone call! BUT I have it on vibrate when out and about , off in theatres/cinemas and only on ringtome at home when it is not about my person but on the shelf in the kitchen or on the desk when I am working.

My mobile never rings because nobody knows my number. I keep it with me in the car or when I am out walking, just for emergencies. My family ring my landline if they want me or send me a pm on Facebook.

It is shocking that people are so rude and disrespectful. It is perfectly possible to put a phone on vibrate if you are truly expecting an urgent message or call. It is not impossible to tell someone that you will be unable to take a call but can read a text!

I once went to the wrong funeral. blush Didn't have my phone with me, fortunately.

It would seem that some people feel naked (or lost, ill equipped, delete where not applicable) unless they have their phone with them. I'm quite happy to leave mine either at home or in the car. If it's important, the caller will either leave a message or call back.

Especially distressing at a funeral, but I also agree about weddings, plays etc. Yesterday I went to my grandchildren's assembly – the six-year-olds class were "in charge". The adults there were, of course, all families come to see their little ones be presented with certificates or to applaud Room 13's sign language version of a popular song. (Sign language is the third official language in New Zealand.) So why did they leave their phones switched on and, worse sg=till, answer them and hold conversations. The whole thing was only 40 minutes long.

No respect at the funeral.

Wow - I'd have found that very upsetting. We went to a wedding last week, the vicar said he felt sure we'd all have switched our mobiles off, but maybe we would like to check before the service began. What is the matter with people - the theatre, the cinema, on the train and now on the plane, is there no escape

Unbelievable

Went to a friends funeral yesterday at the crematorium which was full, about 5 mins into the service someones mobile went off! the person who was doing the service, didn't say anything..nor when the 2nd!! mobille went off!! but when the 3RD!!!! one went off with a very loud normal telephone ring!! he said "perhaps now may be a good time to check your mobiles are silent" he did say it with tongue in cheek..but myself I found it very disrespectfull! hmm
