How about this for a banishing the blues quickie - home-made corned beef hash with peas. Mash up a tin of corned beef and add some baked beans, add a stock cube, pinch of garlic powder and squirt of tomato sauce. Cook slowly until nice and thick, but not burnt, top-off in an oven dish with mashed potato and put in the oven-grill for 15/20 minutes to brown-off, taking care against burning. Add some grated cheese if you wish. With a nice glass or two of red wine and some peas, food for the gods indeed, very quick and simple. Only trouble is, there's never enough!

I agree with soop. Especially if it's in a pub so I haven't had to cook it myself.

There is a portion left, vegas but I've licked it! grin

Dumplings in a beef casserole (my mum's were the best )

when if there's any of that rice pud left, I'll be round grin

A cup of coffee and half a bar of fruit and nut chocolate- heaven.

A savoury dish would be 2 boiled eggs sliced with chips- yummee.

soop Thu 27-Mar-14 14:52:54

Bread and butter pudding with lashings of creamy custard.

Like Gally I'm a fan of Ambrosia Creamed Rice -just as it comes or hot with nutmeg and sultanas, or cold with for preference tinned apricots. It is the one thing I can always eat even when proper poorly. If DH has lost his appetite he can always be tempted by beans on toast.

When I was 10 or 11 I won a family sized tin of peaches and a tin of condensed milk on a tombola stall. In spite of my mother's sensible advice I ate the whole lot, all by myself, in place of Sunday lunch and had the runs for days. I dare not buy condensed milk as no one else likes it and as it does not 'keep' I am 'forced' to consume the whole tin - wonderful with bananas or just sucked off a dipped finger blush

Boiled egg with soldiers, bangers and mash, toast and marmite, glass of milk.

Chip butties - a thing of dreams - GF bread isn't the same. sad They should be in pappy white bread, thickly spread with butter and covered in salt, vinegar and a dash of brown sauce!!

Fish pie mix was on offer today at Sainsbury's so that's tea sorted!! grin

Surprised that nobody has mentioned Nutella yet - straight out of the freezer!

BeeWitch Thu 27-Mar-14 13:18:34

Thick toast and crunchy peanut butter ... yum smile

feetlebaum Thu 27-Mar-14 12:10:58

Mashed potato, with plenty of butter... dal and basmati rice... toast and Marmite...

gillybob Thu 27-Mar-14 11:51:27

Squishy hot cross bun with tons of lovely Lurpak and a big lump of mature cheddar. Dee-bloomin-lishus smile

Joelsnan Thu 27-Mar-14 11:42:40

When I am not feeling well, the only thing I want is Heinz Tomato soup and a sliced white bread cheese sandwich.

papaoscar Thu 27-Mar-14 11:37:34

Heavenly. All these wonderful memories and NO calories!

whenim64 Thu 27-Mar-14 11:00:14

Ooh, chip butties - forgot them. On thick white Warburtons bread, slathered in butter, plenty of salt.

whenim64 Thu 27-Mar-14 10:58:50

Stop it, all of you! grin I have just put a rice pudding in the oven after reading this thread. It's chock full of nutmeg, some vanilla, drop of cream, knobs of butter floating on top. Should be dark brown and crispy on top by lunchtime. smile

harrigran Thu 27-Mar-14 10:41:47

A big bowl of my home made leek and potato soup.

Gally Thu 27-Mar-14 09:49:23

Roses - your husband wouldn't have a spare brother would he grin
I wonder if your DH eats it out of the tin like I do blush (saves on washing up - can't see the point of scooping it from one receptacle to another when it goes down the hatch so quickly)

Ariadne Thu 27-Mar-14 09:19:17

Chips. Proper chips, that is!

Big baked potato with butter and salt.

Hardly ever have either, but love the thought!

Soutra Thu 27-Mar-14 09:14:03

Hot crumpets and golden syrup
hot toast and butter (and maybe jam)

blush peanut butter with OR without toast!
Has anybody seen that biscuit spread they are talking about on Mumsnet? I daren't
even look at it.

liminetta Thu 27-Mar-14 08:41:18

I love food, but don't eat lots of it.My DH says I am a "nibbler".My favourite evening nibbles are walnuts and cranberries, which I happily munch together.Great companions for TV watching.smile

Aka Thu 27-Mar-14 08:01:25

Fish finger butties Iam64 yes, I'd forgotten those.

Iam64 Thu 27-Mar-14 07:58:44

I was introduced to the joy of a fish finger butty by a friend's daughter recently. I didn't add ketchup, because I'm not a fan, but did put salt on. I now understand why 'young people' eat this delicious bit of comfort food.
