Gripe about bank and HMRC

Here are two grumbles - bear with me.

Just had a letter from HMRC telling me I owe them £260. I paid my tax bill on time. After a long phone conversation it now seems that I do not owe them that, but £90 and the error arose because, when I did my self-assessment, I assumed that my gigantic (!?) state pension was paid 12 times a year, when it is actually 13 - i.e. every 4 weeks, rather than every calendar month. It just got under my skin that I am being hounded for £90 when big businesses are silting away millions that they should pay in tax. They made me feel like a criminal, when I had done my best - why should I be a tax expert?

Then I set to to pay it online and my bank really got under my skin. You cannot just log on without skirting your way around some offer that they have for you; and the same happens when you try to log off; they delay it by 30 seconds and force you to look at some "product" that they want to hook you in on.

Very grumpy this afternoon as I wanted to be out in the sunshine, not farting about with finance.

Grumble over - I feel better now!

This is to do with your first point about big businesses and the tax they do not pay. The problem is what do we do about it.

Here's some more about HMRC. They do not appear to know how much tax is missing. They go for easy targets, you and me.

Yes - I did feel like an easy target. You have no idea how small my pension is and how tiny the freelance earnings for that tax year.

I ill have some freelance earnings next year and I am tempted to say I will do it for love to avoid the hassle - the earnings are so small.

I suppose as a freelancer you are allowed to ask for less than the minimum wage, but would they be breaking the law for paying you less?
