Here are two grumbles - bear with me.
Just had a letter from HMRC telling me I owe them £260. I paid my tax bill on time. After a long phone conversation it now seems that I do not owe them that, but £90 and the error arose because, when I did my self-assessment, I assumed that my gigantic (!?) state pension was paid 12 times a year, when it is actually 13 - i.e. every 4 weeks, rather than every calendar month. It just got under my skin that I am being hounded for £90 when big businesses are silting away millions that they should pay in tax. They made me feel like a criminal, when I had done my best - why should I be a tax expert?
Then I set to to pay it online and my bank really got under my skin. You cannot just log on without skirting your way around some offer that they have for you; and the same happens when you try to log off; they delay it by 30 seconds and force you to look at some "product" that they want to hook you in on.
Very grumpy this afternoon as I wanted to be out in the sunshine, not farting about with finance.
Grumble over - I feel better now!
