(I'm not very good at this adding a link thing. Jings - I how do you add a link but write something else?)

Came across this article - Luke Cameron doing an Act of Random Kindness every day for a year in memory of a friend. All very laudable and paying for a stranger's meal is certainly an ACT, but when I read the article most of the other things he lists I would class as just good manners and neighbourly. And writing a blog about it seems like bragging. He got a colleagues lunch for him because the chap was on crutches - so? - wouldn't anyone?

I read the article and agree with you, NfkDumpling. In fact, it rang a bell as the whole thing sounded familiar and I remembered this thread

Not an original idea, then, although Luke Cameron may never have heard of this book.

Hmmmm - and the book came out a year ago? Oh, I'm getting cynical in my old age!

He does seem disproportionately pleased about simple acts of kindness that others do without thinking – helping the elderly neighbour, for example. However, it is possible that his blog might spur on others who do not regularly help out other people to do so.

Yes, there's absolutely nothing wrong with what he's done/is doing, it's just that like the other author the good deeds/acts of kindness sometimes seem contrived or to be what any helpful person would do without thinking.

I hope his blog does encourage others to follow his example.

Hopefully, it might encourage other people to be more kind and thoughtful as they go through each day.

With no thought or anticipation of reciprocation or acknowledgement, yes. And certainly not for publicity purposes.

It does seem a bit clinical but if it does some good then it's better than "random acts of selfishness" I suppose.

Ariadne Thu 18-Dec-14 16:19:49

Yes it is, rockgran but still, publicising it feels a bit tacky.

NfkDumpling Thu 18-Dec-14 16:21:41

I suppose it niggled as I wouldn't consider helping an elderly neighbour as a good deed. It's just what anyone would do - at least that's what I thought. The fact that he thought it was a big deal.... Well... I find it a bit sad. But, yes Eloethan I suppose if it encourages the more selfish out there in Blogland to consider others it's not a bad thing.

NfkDumpling Thu 18-Dec-14 16:23:23

Not altogether a bad thing. And it did get him a £35000 jobs!

First, blue the web address you want to link to, then right click and click on copy. This will make the address go into your mouse (yes, it does! it must do) Then in the posting box type your two double square brackets, paste address from out of your mouse into your message, leave a space and type something like "this" (or whatever you would like to say) And then it's done.

If you are using a tablet of course, you copy with your finger, and so the web address actually goes into your finger. (yes, it does!)

Ana Thu 18-Dec-14 18:48:50

Or you can just copy and paste the link into your post box, add two square brackets at the front, put a space at the end and add your word or phrase then close with two brackets!

You can practise, just keep previewing your message to see what it'll look like before you actually post it.
