Just wondering if subscriptions are still popular? And if so which magazines?
I usually renew my Good Housekeeping one, some years add in Country Living- does anyone remember the competition debacle many years ago now and the offshoot forums set up as a result? RHS comes with membership as does OH's National Trust magazine. .

I had a subscription to New Scientist because I got frustrated with not having my own copy each time I read an interesting article in the library. Once I was paying for it I got into the mindset that I was going to read it all cover to cover in order to get my money's worth, and that spoilt it by making reading it a chore. Pity really, I've never even got back into the habit of reading it in the library since I cancelled the subscription, either.

I'm a member of Which, which reminds me, I ought to cancel it really.

Sorry to interrupt (by the way, I think magazine subscriptions make a very good Christmas/birthday present for people who can be hard to buy for) but I can't help but notice that there have been quite a few threads started in the "AIBU" section that don't fall into the category. confused

Perhaps it's because it's the first one on the list of subjects?

(Yes, I know that I probably should have put this comment in Pedants Corner blush )

I have abandoned my subscriptions. I kept a pile of Good Housekeeping, Coast and Gardeners World. After a while both magazines became so repetitive.
I could read the previous years and see no difference in the topics.
Coast's photos are repeated in Country life's ' summer special'.

I now just buy what looks interesting from a variety of titles, or just don't bother.

I get Good Food (was a gift that has now been repeated for a number of years and I really like getting it through the post every month)

Other than that the ones i tend to buy are Good Housekeeping, Woman and Home and Olive

I made the mistake of taking out a subscription to Woman and Home. It's definitely for the younger woman (like Cari). I gave DD Good Housekeeping for Xmas and usually manage to hide from the grandsons in it when we visit. I think that is the best mag. Good Food has got too up its adventurous in its cooking.

I have Good Food delivered with the papers and then get a shock when I go to pay the bill! I pick up others in the supermarket as and when. I quite often buy the Sainsbury's one for the recipes and I like the Waitrose one if I am lucky enough to be in a Waitrose! sad

At one stage I got so harassed by the big pile on my side table that I stopped buying them for a while but it's a hard habit to break! I don't very often read them but tear out recipes and, consequently, have an enormous pile in the kitchen waiting to be tried or filed (probably in the bin!)

By the way, I agree with phoenix! Threads do appear to be in the strangest places lately. confused

When the kids were small I used to take Family Circle (the UK version packed up some time in the 80s). I still use them today - for the recipes - and love re-reading the articles as well. I don't see any need to buy any new ones.

Anyway, there don't seem to be any magazines around these days that are full of sensible stuff for real people. I have picked up a couple at airports, but they seem to be all full of ads.

ninathenana Wed 01-Jul-15 18:05:08

I don't subscribe but I do buy 'Yours' magazine quiet regularly. I'd say that fits your bill JackyB I also buy 'Beautiful Homes' 'Home & Garden' or anything similar that takes my fancy.

I'm a prolific reader and a bit of a magazine addict. I subscribe to Prima, Woman and Home, and Good Housekeeping and Woman's Weekly on a weekly basis ( as I expect you guessed!) It's much cheaper to buy on subscription and I don't have to remember when the next one is due as it arrives in the post, usually a bit earlier than it appears in the shops. Love them!

durhamjen Wed 01-Jul-15 19:05:22

Used to get Vegetarian Good Food. Then they decided to put a few recipes in the back of the ordinary Good Food, so I told them I wanted my money back.

I buy Dalesman and Who Do You think You Are. They were both originally presents from my husband, and I do not want to stop them yet.

FarNorth Wed 01-Jul-15 19:12:32

I don't have any subscriptions but have a magazine addiction that I am trying to control.
I've not bought any Woman's Weekly or Woman's Realm for a while but was lured by a copy of Psychologies the other day.

Apologies for apparently posting in the wrong place. I did look for the most appropriate home for the subject but failed to find an exact fit. Will limit future posts to those I am 100% sure are in the correct place.

Have enjoyed reading the choices of others none the less.

annsixty Wed 01-Jul-15 20:07:19

I get a yearly subscription to Good Housekeeping courtesy of my bank but it is not as good as it was years ago.

FarNorth Wed 01-Jul-15 20:09:38

sprite66 When in doubt, post in Chat. smile

I just can't be bothered with magazines these days. The glossies are full of ads for things I don't want and the others seem full of people I've never heard of. I just keep loading up my Kindle with inexpensive downloads and the occasional treat

vampirequeen Wed 01-Jul-15 20:25:10

I don't buy magazines. I get the ones included in English Heritage, Caravan Club and Historic House Assoc membership and I sometimes read the problem pages in the ones they leave out in the doctors surgery.

I did once try to read one for triathletes. I managed the swimming and cycling but had to give up the running due to exhaustion. I think I should have trained on Women's Weekly and Bella first grin

merlotgran Wed 01-Jul-15 20:41:43

The RHS magazine comes with membership and so does DH's RSPB mag. I sometimes buy Gardens Illustrated which has me drooling over the upmarket gardens they feature....A girl can dream!

I like to buy Country Living in the run up to Christmas because it has some lovely ideas for rural themed pressies and decorations and this month I bought English Home for the first time because I wanted something to thumb through while DH was having his lengthy check up on his eyes. The mags in the waiting room bring out the Margot Leadbetter in me. grin

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 01-Jul-15 20:46:08

This is as good a place as any sprite, and no, you are not being unreasonable. grin

Good thread.

'Chat' is always a safe option. Not that it matters one iota.

No subscriptions but I used to buy Good Housekeeping now and again, but thought it wasn't as good the last time or two that I did buy it and far too many ads.Once, about seven years ago, our DD came to visit, saw the GH mag on the coffee table and scoffed at it,' ooh, good housekeeping!' Etc. I told her it was better than it sounded. a while later I came into the room and found her, feet up, engrossed and reading the entire mag.She sheepishly said that it was quite good after all. smug mode!

downtoearth Wed 01-Jul-15 20:58:08

I have to admit to my guilty pleasures..Bella ..love the big cross word..take a break...chat.....also get yours each fortnight...they have a where are you section....I live in hope someone might be remembering me and is desperate to make contact.....me sophisticated nooooo grin

Ana Wed 01-Jul-15 21:03:49

I can't remember when I last bought a magazine. I look at them in waiting rooms and they all seem to contain the same sort of trivia.

I suppose it's different if it's a publication relating to a particular interest.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 01-Jul-15 21:05:48

Not a single magazine to be seen in our surgery waiting room this morning. Don't know if they have decided they get too germ ridden.
