So, does that mean they will attack food shops that sell over priced stuff, or other cafes? Many areas of London are now gentrified that we all remember as places we would rather not live, that's the way it goes.

Elegran Mon 28-Sep-15 16:36:45

They haven't the nous to start something like that themselves, so they attack those who do instead.

No-one was asking them to pay £2.50 for a bowl of porridge - they could stay home and make their own. If/when the price of a packet of flaked oats rises skyhigh, that will be the time for a demonstration.

I am willing to bet that they had their mobile phones with them, up-to-date all-singing, all-dancing ones on expensive all-inclusive tarriffs.

I heard an interview this morning with someone who was on the protest. Although he said he disagreed with the attack, he said all they did was set off a few smoke bombs, write the word scum on the window and scatter some breakfast cereal on the ground and saying the people in the shop were not "terrified" - I think I would be pretty scared with smoke bombs going off and a baying mob outside! He also seemed to be attempting to justify it by making personal comments about the people who run the cafe ("hipsters is so out of date" etc.) and saying only the middle class could afford those prices.

He did say their protest had been taken over by the "class war mob".

As others have said, I don't know what they hope to gain by attacking a small business which gives employment to local people and who have obviously found a niche in the market.

Quaker Oat So Simple Original Porridge Pot 50G one serving, 99p Just add boiling water and stir.

Adding £1.51 for a bowl of real porridge, made for you, cleared up for you, served with a smile, all overheads, rates and taxes included, several people gainfully employed and not on benefits paid for by the taxpayer - doesn't sound bad to me.

They wer just out to to demonstrate against something.

rosequartz Mon 28-Sep-15 14:31:40

No, because they are idiots

merlotgran Mon 28-Sep-15 14:25:11

Does it not occur to the idiots that the overheads in a 'gentrified London borough' are going to be sky high?

I bet you have to sell a fair few bowls of cereal to break even.

rosequartz Mon 28-Sep-15 14:20:37

Do they have nothing better to do than disrupt other peoples' lives?

If the breakfast is overpriced then no-one will buy it.
£2.50 for a bowl of porridge in London doesn't sound bad when you consider a cup of coffee out in the sticks costs the same.

Grannyknot Mon 28-Sep-15 14:14:54

terribull your last sentence made me laugh out loud.

And by the way, I read an interview with one of the brothers who own the cafe this morning, and their bowls of porridge are sold for starting at £2.50 each.

This should be treated just as seriously as any other mob rioting.

grandmother lived in Westbourne Grove, now gentrified to Notting Hill - it was Peter RAchman's domain all round there - definitely not desirable/gentrified. Though many years later, Peter Mandelson bought a house next door to my granny's!

Islington the most gentrified of all London boroughs
That made DH lol, it's where he grew up.

The two lads who started up the Cereal Cafe are working class from Belfast, clearly the stupidly named "Fuck Parade" have no idea whatsoever in what businesses, albeit small ones, have to pay in overheads and the risk they take in starting up such a venture. They also ignore the fact that they are employing people and as such are damn sight more use to society than a no mark rent a mob could ever be.

I hope the Cereal Cafe stay open and get more customers through the door in solidarity.

Such a pathetic bunch of idiots perhaps the local community could rename them the "Fuck Off Parade"

Grannyknot Sun 27-Sep-15 22:23:06

It was organised by a group called the Fuck Parade.

More tweets:

"To add to their other sins, the posing faux-anarchists have now made me sympathise with people who run a hipster cereal café."

"What I hate most about the #CerealCafe is how they deregulated the banks, sell social housing and invented the non dom tax status."

There are many similar ones.

Next to Notting Hill!

rosesarered Sun 27-Sep-15 22:16:48

It should have been in Islington, the most gentrified of all London boroughs!

Grannyknot Sun 27-Sep-15 22:09:47

They were "anti-gentrification" protesters who also targeted an estate agent's office. People expressed their disgust at it on Twitter, e.g. (hope the link works):

I think it's bang out of order.

NotTooOld Sun 27-Sep-15 19:27:39

I'm actually surprised anyone took any notice, particularly in London where most things are overpriced. Were they rentacrowd sent by a rival restaurant/purveyors of bowls of cereal do you think?

TerriBull Sun 27-Sep-15 17:20:26

I have just read the leading story on the DM website regarding an anti capitalist demonstration in London.

I gather the thrust of this was about the gentrification of certain areas in the city. Whilst I fully understand the stance many take on the lack of affordable housing and the living wage. This was something different altogether. A couple of so called "hipsters" have opened a cafe selling bowls of cereal at £4.50 each. 200 or so rabble gathered outside this cafe chucking smoke bombs and the like whilst the terrified customers and staff huddled inside scared witless.

AIBU to think that if the owners have seen a gap in the market for this business and their customers want to spend their money on over priced bowls of cereal then that is their prerogative to do that very thing. This is still a free country!

Those that seek to intimidate a business and it's customers in this way do their cause no good at all.
