To dislike the idea of Black Friday

I am already receiving emails telling me about" Black Friday bargains". Since when did we have " Black Friday" ? This is the day after Thanksgiving- I didn't think we celebrated Thanksgiving in the UK - or do we now? AIBU to dislike this whole Black Friday thing?

suzied...am with you....mass blind consumerism is not attractive. I love a bit of low key Christmas shopping, actually going out and getting a little something special for loved ones is lovely......industrial levels of 'throwing money' at it is just tacky.

Another import from the US. Will we never learn?

Awful, the scenes last year were disgusting.

The first I heard about it was around this time last year. I did take advantage and bought a Kindle Fire HD and have not regretted it.

Doesn't appeal to me at all but I avoid all the last minute mad Christmas dash and January sales too.

I avoid anything like that like the plague. It wouldn't matter how much I was saving.

Ignore. Not hard.

Ignore it. I can't even bear ordinary sales or shops like TK Max where everything is so mixed up and messy. I couldn't believe the disgraceful scenes in some shops last year.

I think its just a way of getting rid of old models of electric goods and other things and persuading us that they are cheap when they probably wouldn't have been any different prices anyway. American import -not for me.

No incentive whatsoever would persuade me to join in the mayhem known as Black Friday. I'll stay home, thanks.

Plenty of bargains can be found on line. Nothing would persuade me to join a rabble on so-called Black Friday.

Asda and other shops have said they're not taking part this year. For 'elf n safety' reasons.
Bloody good job too.

I would not join in this rush for a bargain, I think it is a way of getting rid of the stuff that is not selling as well as they like. Leave American customs in America.

rubysong Sat 14-Nov-15 14:36:22

It shouldn't happen here. The reason they do it in USA is because of when their financial year ends, hence getting rid of as much stock as possible before that date. It's like our January sales which are for the same reason. Surely January and a summer sale is enough for us without adding in another sales event.

It's appalling, but I just ignore it and don't go out on that day.
