I was going to have a quiet word with the manager until I saw who they were! She was being both helpful and pleasant.

I did a Christmas job with Boots many years ago and the manager was always a Pharmacist with a very professional attitude , DH's golf partner was one, but perhaps times change, however standards don't with me. Am I a dinosaur?

The girl wearing the jumper in question actually was the store manager.

I must be old fashioned- not quite what I expected in Boots or any other store.

The jumpers are everywhere this year. The quote is just a reference to a scene shot to look like an old movie, that the boy Kevin watches in the film Home Alone 2.
I have heard that some shop workers are told to only wear Christmas jumpers sold by their own store. I don't know whether this applies to Boots, where the choice would be limited.
I wouldn'have batted an eyelid if I saw the manager wearing one of these.

If ever I am feeling really down I simply have to watch Home Alone and laugh until I cry. It is guaranteed to cheer me up.

At this time of year there are plenty of shops where the staff wear Christmas jumpers. Are you saying that,in your opinion, the manageress shouldn't have joined in?

I would have complained, Encouraging staff to wear Christmas sweaters is one thing, but wearing ones that contain words that quite a number of people would find crude and unpleasant, reflects badly on the store, particularly in a big chainstore like Boots.

Am quite surprised by Boots as I worked for them for at least 20 odd years in one role or another until 2003,their emphasis was on professional at all times.courtesy was a by word and customer always right in our 3 local ones this does not apply as the couldnt be less helpful.My time for working for them we were allowed one pair of stud earrings,a discreet wristwatch,one ring and wedding/engagment rings,nail polish neutral and not chipped,court shoes and tights at all times even when temperatures soared,they had to be flesh coloured or dreaded american tan.Pharmacist managers wore business suits,even tinsel decorated earrings where frowned on....how time have changed have worked in community pharamacies and other chains during the years where dress code is more relaxed..as younger managers are appointed the less stuffy and traditional ideas are bound to change..christmas jumpers one thing but with slogans like the one seen...I am surprised that this was seen as appropriate....I would have been happy just to wip me tights off when I was hot

I don't mind spending money at Christmas on presents big or small, when I know the recipient will enjoy the present and get some use out of it.
I don't mind spending money to make the Christmas meal special.
I don't mind spending money on having friends and neighbours round for drinks or a meal to enjoy the Christmas spirit of goodwill.
But I object to the waste of buying clothes with ridiculous designs and in horrible colours, that are only going to be worn once or twice and make their wearers look ridiculous too. One of the manifestations of the over commercialisation of Christmas.
Bah humbug! That goes for reindeer antlers too.

I was a bit shocked when DGD said 'How are you, ya filthy animal' to one of her soft toys the other week until it was explained that it is a quote from 'Home Alone 2 - Lost in New York' which she had watched the day before.

It's supposed to be funny (I think). There are pictures, jumpers etc etc with this quote on apparently. I blame Hollywood.

It's all very well blaming Hollywood roseq but Hollywood doesn't actually force people to buy the things, does it?

I saw the M&S Christmas sweaters on line and thought- ah Landfill. And where do people keep the Christmas cushions and bedding for the rest of the year? They must live in mansions. Or do they buy afresh every year.

I navigated Boots website and emailed a restrained suggestion that the jumper was neither appropriate nor professional.

I confess, I have a Christmas Jumper. It is not outragious, in red, with a white fairisle type pattern that is actually rows of alternate small Christmas trees and rheindeers with a scatter of stars. It looks very Scandinavian.

I wear it quite a lot around November/January. it is warm, festive and not too obviously Christmassy nor is it OTT. My sweater will be in use for at least five years, this is its third year.

I have a Christmas t shirt-well, it's actually a pyjama top but looks like a t shirt. Can't deal with jumpers, need layers. It's navy with a lovely fat cartoon robin on it.
