Never did I think I would agree with Edwina Currie !

I have just read an article where Edwina Currie says that using larger models on the catwalk and in advertising is 'dangerous because they make it seem normal to be obese'.

I so agree with her. However the dreaded Daily Mail (I read it most days !!) showed a model purporting to be a size 14, well she looked far bigger to me. I am a 14/16 and am nowhere as big as the model Ashley Graham at the New York fashion show.

EC says that there are so many negative implications of being obese and promoting larger models is unhealthy.

I am now behind the barricade so you can now start shooting. grin

Ashley Graham isn't obese (IMO). I think Edwina's just scaremongering.

Promoting more 'normal-sized' models will perhaps make women and young girls feel better about themselves instead of trying to diet to a size 6, or falling into depression because they think they're the wrong shape.

There is a world of a difference between a normal-sized model (i.e. not like a coat-hanger) and promoting obesity. Most people are in fact between a 14 and a 16, so clothes should be tailored to their needs, and catwalks should contain women of those sizes.

I didn't know that most people are a 14-16 Lucky shock

What is an English size 14 in USA sizes?

Riverwalk Mon 29-Feb-16 13:06:32

UK size 14 is an 18 in the US.

WilmaKnickersfit Mon 29-Feb-16 13:13:00

Riverwalk it's the other way around. A UK size 14 is a US size 10. A UK size 18 is a US size 14.

gillybob Mon 29-Feb-16 13:15:33

If you use thin models you are promoting eating disorders and poor body image. If you use larger models you are promoting obesity. confused

You can't win.

gillybob Mon 29-Feb-16 13:16:19

It's like the 3 bears of modelling.

That ones too thin.
That ones too fat

Aaaaaah that one's just right !

Riverwalk Mon 29-Feb-16 13:17:20

Yes, you're right Wilma!!

I'm a UK 12 but when in the US or buying at GAP I'm an 8!

Teetime Mon 29-Feb-16 13:35:32

The real trouble with models is that they are tall and the clothes look better on taller people. So speaketh someone with short fat hairy legs!!!

Edwina always sounds deranged on any subject.

Anniebach Mon 29-Feb-16 13:37:29

Edwina doesn't sound deranged - she is deranged, stupid woman

WilmaKnickersfit Mon 29-Feb-16 14:00:54

NanKate Ashley Graham is a US size 14 which is a size 18 here in the UK.

She's about 5'9" tall. I think she looks great and is an example of a healthy looking woman.

GillT57 Mon 29-Feb-16 14:02:27

Edwina Currie sounds as if she is on a new self promoted career based on the wonderful Katie Hopkins. Open mouth, spew out something nasty/bigoted/ignorant/prejudiced and stand back.......and be paid. What a ghastly pair they are.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 29-Feb-16 14:04:20

Hmm. I think she looks a bit fat in that picture. And I bet it's been touched up to not show the flab.

Atqui Mon 29-Feb-16 14:05:35

Although Ashley Graham is overweight, I wouldn't have thought she was actually obese. There is a difference. If only the fashion industry would use models who are neither painfully thin or overweight. ,It's very difficult to gauge what clothes bought online will look like in real life when the model is 5'11 and a size 8.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 29-Feb-16 14:07:05

Are these real?!!!

Atqui Mon 29-Feb-16 14:07:21

Apparently they airbrush the pictures of "plus size " models to make them look hourglass , and also slim down their arms Jings.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 29-Feb-16 14:16:38

I wasn't actually talking about her arms. TBH. grin

Riverwalk Mon 29-Feb-16 14:22:07

In various pictures the model in question has huge thighs and legs - any woman with such legs just doesn't have such a trim waist and flat abdomen!

It's an unrealistic vision of someone who is obese and we shouldn't condone promotion of unhealthily overweight young women - it doesn't do the majority any favours.

NanKate Mon 29-Feb-16 14:23:41

Thanks Wilma I was sure she wasn't a size 14, so she is a US 14 ! I still think she looks a bit porky and glamorous too. smile

I see by your comments you think I am wrong. That's the great thing about GN we can have different views but still have a good debate.

WilmaKnickersfit Mon 29-Feb-16 14:25:33

jings yes, they are real. This video is about the SI photo shoot and I think it's obvious from watching it that her boobs are real.

Sports Illustrated

Atqui Mon 29-Feb-16 14:27:06

what about the Kardishan ( spelling?) woman ? She has a very strangely proportioned body! I agree this one has probably been airbrushed , but I had a friend who had v small, waist, flat tummy , and huge thighs.

gillybob Mon 29-Feb-16 14:29:47

I don't think anyone who is a size UK 18 would have such smooth lines so I guess she has had her wobbly bits airbrushed.

I would love to have had a bit more bum and boob and wish I could kind of shove the middle bit up and down.

WilmaKnickersfit Mon 29-Feb-16 14:30:12

I encourage posters to watch the video of Ashley on the link I just posted. She's not slim or fat, but she's probably at the high end of a healthy weight for her height. I think she looks healthy.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 29-Feb-16 14:30:31

Good grief! She's probably perfectly healthy, but she needs to behave herself. hmm
