Blooming scatter cushions

We are house sitting for relatives and on going into our designated bedroom we find scatter cushions on the bed hmm. This really irritates me. What are we supposed to do with them? I have got them stacked up on the sofa.

Can someone please explain the point of these great cushions which seem to have infiltrated lots of hotels too. I hate them.

Teacher11...cushions are called "pillows"
across the pond in the States.
Ive bought some lovely Laura Ashley cushions online with heavy discounts.
So I wait for that time to arrive !!

FarNorth Tue 15-Mar-16 10:59:19

Exactly, Indinana. I guess it's a harmless habit for people who want to do that but confused.
I'll stick to pillows for comfort, propping etc.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 15-Mar-16 11:02:01

I wouldn't call a cushion a 'pillow'. Just wrong. But the bathroom basin is a sink. As well as a basin. Or the trade 'wash hand basin'. Which sounds ridiculous.

Cushions and strips on beds at home is pretentious.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 15-Mar-16 11:03:30

shock smile

No cushions is my bedroom, scattered or otherwise, only pillows. I don't make the bed until late afternoon, as I throw back the duvet to air, and on fine days hang the duvet out the window. Very continental! smile

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 15-Mar-16 11:14:46

I air the bed. Just while I have brekker and GN though. Leave it any longer and it wouldn't be done at bedtime. shock (and that's horrible!)

Haven't got the nerve to dangle out of window. grin I do put 'em on the back line when I change for seasons.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 15-Mar-16 11:15:29

I meant he duvet out the window. Not me!

ffinnochio Tue 15-Mar-16 11:20:30

I suppose my neighbour could see my dangling duvet, but then hers is probably dangling, too, J. No secrets in a French village wink

kittylester Tue 15-Mar-16 11:43:36

Nankate, no idea what they are called now but I hadn't heard 'scatter cushions' for ages. smile

Anyway, jing has decreed that I am pretentious so what do I know! grin And, not only do I have cushions on the bed but I have a matching strip. I had them made to match the curtains (it's getting worse!) In my defence I would like to say that our bedroom windows are small and the bedding is white so I wanted more pattern! blush

Another confession - each time I have given birth, DH has bought me a monkey (soppy s*d!) so there are 5 spread around our bedroom and are very special to me. Unfortunately, DGD1 has decided that I like cuddlies and remembers every single one she has bought me and checks where they are! grin

Love cushions! Made some out of a silk sari someone gave me, and anyone who visits is so complimentary! We have some on the bed and I just chick them on the floor at night.

Chrishappy Tue 15-Mar-16 12:25:19

I use cushions to prop up if I'm reading or unwell, I like to feel snug when under the weather. The strips on beds in hotels are for a purpose,Many people myself included relax on the bed to watch TV or just rest before changing for dinner, the strips are to prevent scuff or polish marks from shoes or boots marking the duvet cover

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 15-Mar-16 12:30:21

kitty grin

(GD1 sounds lovely btw)

WilmaKnickersfit Tue 15-Mar-16 12:32:31

I call the bathroom sink the bathroom sink. Don't think I've ever called it a basin. confused

WilmaKnickersfit Tue 15-Mar-16 12:35:51

I also share my bed with Minnie Mouse, a polar bear and a monkey. All are escapees from the parks when we went on holiday to Florida. They just appeared in our apartment and I had to bring them home with me, in case they'd get into trouble for running away.

Antjexix Tue 15-Mar-16 12:50:34

I like cushions on the bed, also have a beautiful bedspread. It just makes the bed so inviting and cosy looking,it takes 20 seconds to take them off at night and 20 seconds to put them back in the morning smile

Nelliemoser Tue 15-Mar-16 13:01:03

They look pretty but to have to fight your way into bed and find somewhere to put the B cushions so you don't trip over them if you have to get up in the night drives me mad.

It's particularly difficult to store them if you only have a small single bedroom.

pollyperkins Tue 15-Mar-16 13:37:02

I agree with Indinanas post at 10.37. I just cant see the point of them especially in a private house. In hotels we always fold the strip of cloth upand put it on a chair or on top of the wardrobe with all the cushions. If we wAnt to sit up in bed we use the pillows. But I do like cushions on the sofa and chairs downstairs as they support my back - ive got short legs. Also they look nice in a more public room.

ninathenana Tue 15-Mar-16 13:47:19

Have just discussed this with D her comment
"You put them on the bed when you make it in the morning and you don't see them again until you chuck them off at night, so why?"
grin

pollyperkins Tue 15-Mar-16 13:54:50

Absolutely nina - im with her there. Cant stand cuddly toys in the bedroom either (except for a child) sorry Wilma and Kitty. My DH would be very scathing if I had any! And i call the thing in the bathroom the wash basin. The Sink is in the kitchen!!

pollyperkins Tue 15-Mar-16 13:55:56

But we are all different. Thats what makes life interesting!

Jalima Tue 15-Mar-16 14:03:32

Just scatter them on the floor (not where you might trip over them when you have to get up in the night to pay a visit) smile

We got two 'free' cushions with each of our new sofas - they will probably end up as seats for the DGC! They are quite large and annoying me already hmm

WilmaKnickersfit Tue 15-Mar-16 14:07:57

polly I gave away all my cuddly toys and told my family to stop buying them for me. For years I owned just one and it lived in the wardrobe (sentimental value). Then three of them appeared during that one holiday in 2005. They're a reminder of one of our best holidays, but thankfully no more have appeared. grin

kittylester Tue 15-Mar-16 15:07:11

Do none of you go into your bedrooms to change during the course of the day? I usually dress in scruffs until I'm going out and then I have to go up and change.

I expect you all have dressing rooms - now that's pretentious!! grin

Neversaydie Tue 15-Mar-16 15:47:27

Who knew that about those cloth strips chrishappy But I wouldn't dream of putting my shod feet on a bed ...
DH just about tolerates cushions on the downstairs setttees .But he would get annoyed with any on our bed IME most men dislike cushions...
