AIBU to be annoyed at this business practice.

Our oven stopped working yesterday. The first two repair companies I contacted could not come out until next week, but the third said he could call today at 10am.

He eventually arrived at 11:20, but replacing the burnt-out element only took him about a quarter of an hour, and the oven now works well. Sorted, I thought.

But after he had left, I noticed that he had stuck labels on our fridge, freezer, washing machine and hob (but not the oven bizarrely) saying "If this appliance ever needs servicing, please contact <<his business name and phone number>>". And to add insult to injury, when I tried to remove the labels I discovered they were the type that will not peel off cleanly, but instead break up leaving partial label and a sticky residue behind.

I am tempted to send him an invoice for my time and effort in removing his advertising from my kitchen. What does anyone else think? Am I being unreasonable?

No, that's annoying and was unnecessary and If he'd done that to me unlikely to gain him any more business. Cheek of the man!

It is cheeky, but yes, I think you're being unreasonable.

If you're annoyed ring and tell the company. Bear in mind though they came out quickly and after you tried two other companies, so surely that counts for something? Did they do a good job and charge a fair price? Are the labels in a place where they're unsightly? If it bothers you enough, just don't use them again. Maybe the company is trying to build up a customer base and think it's a good idea to stick labels on appliances to make it easier for you in the future.

No , you've been stressed out with the problem of having a broken down oven then the search for a reliable ,responsive , capable repair man .
But you've found an angel - keep his number in your hero contact book ,then take time to removing his over zealous stickers and laugh about it . Then bake !

I am always quite happy if (satisfactory) repair men leave a business card or, better still, a small fridge magnet with their details. By the way, you can buy a spray that removes the gluey residue from sticky labels.

I would be annoyed to find someone had put stickers on my appliances, no matter how good a repair man he is. He should have left a card or at the very least asked if you would like him to put a sticker on one appliance.

Our new lift service company has done a good job. Everyone is satisfied with them -except...they've left a sticker on the lift control panel... fair enough but it contains a glaring spelling error. It jumps out at me every time I'm in the lift. I'd peel the label off but the lift is for all the residents so I don't think I can. I'll just have to add another sticker with 'Sp see me' on it like my teachers used to!

If you use a hair dryer on a sticky label it usually comes off cleanly.

Our boiler repair man leaves a sticker on the boiler with the date when the next service is required, and that is useful because we would otherwise be bound to forget. But he does not trail round and stick them on anything else - darn cheek!

It would have been better to give you his business card.

I too hate those stickers that you cannot properly remove - thanks for the hair dryer tip - I will try that next time. My brother once gave me a lovely wooden cheese board with such a sticker on - I have had it for decades and still cannot get it off.

I think it was a bit cheeky to sticker everything without asking. I know Id be miffed. By all means ask - and I'd accept one but I have no need to sticker every item in the kitchen - I'm old not stupid smile

A bit too enthusiatic marketing! I think I would be phoning and asking them to come and remove them. They are their stickers, they ought to know how to remove them, and if it is difficult it might stop them sticking any more on anyone else's fridges.

Tell them that you don't need these reminders, you already know that they came out and did a good job, you don't need your appliances defaced to remind you - in fact it has put you off them to see the stickers on everything.

YANBU, I would be furious and would certainly never use the company again. Sticky stuff remover from Lakeland removes residue from every kind of label.
Most of the companies I deal with give me fridge magnets or credit card type cards with name and telephone number. All my appliances are behind lacquered doors so if I found stickers on the doors it would result in more than an angry phone call.

WD40 will shift a sticky label, no need for a separate product. If the chap did a fair job for a fair price I would keep his contact details as these chaps are hard to find as you have discovered. Maybe a phone call to him saying thanks for the good service but you didn't appreciate the labels. He is only trying to build up his clientele and not realized how annoying it was. A business card is all he needs to leave behind.

I don't think you are being unreasonable. A business card / flier would have sufficed. To put stickers on all your electrical appliances is an invasion of your space. I think I would be inclined to ring the company, thank them for the service at short notice, but also offer customer feedback, then ask them if they are they aware that the stickers they use are hard to remove and have caused a problem - say that a business card or similar would have been much more appreciated.

Thanks. On the basis of a "quick show of hands" it seems that most are in agreement with me. I took some time to sit and think through WHY I was so annoyed about this, and concluded that it wasn't just the invasion of my personal property - but rather that I found it a bit patronising. If I had been 30something rather than 60something would he have done the same I wonder? I just felt that there was an element of "poor old bloke will never remember who fixed this so we'll leave him a few reminders"!

Anyway, I have emailed the company and told them of my displeasure. I ended by saying that I would keep their number, but they would not be my first port of call in future and that I was unlikely to recommend them to anybody else. I wonder if they will reply.

Good. My DH said that you should insist that he comes back and removes the stickers himself. He's defaced your property. Let us know if you get a response.

Back to ukulele please tell me, does one say A Yukulele or An Ookulele?
Just a query about pronunciation. I would always say a ukulele, as I've never heard anyone use 'an' when referring to ukuleles, never..
