My neighbour brought me windfalls last night that he'd scrumped from his neighbour I always make one for him and one for us.
So I made the pastry yesterday and left it overnight in the fridge came to roll it out and it was so dry I couldn't roll it I had to recrumble it and add some more water and knead it and re roll it again. So pealed the apples lined the dishes and put the lid on first one then realised I hadn't sugared it or put some cinnamon in, off came the @loody lid which was a devils own job and I redid it.

Second pie same method , perfect, but I had sugared and forgotten the cinnamon not a disaster in itself really egged and sugared both tops and in the oven they went but I must of made a thousand apple pies in the past you'd think by now I could do it with my eyes closed. blush

I did the same thing recently - blackberry and apple pie. Just about to put it in the oven and noticed the blackberries still sitting on the worktop. Quickly whipped the top off and stuck them in. The eventual overall appearance would not have impressed Mary Berry (or anyone else for that matter) but it didn't last long anyway! I'm award leaving someone out. Tuna and mushroom pasta bake - without the tuna ? - for example! I like to think it's an age thing. No, actually, I don't like to think that it's a age thing!

You reminded me of my dear grandmother tanith who I lost a long time ago now. She was the most wonderful cook and once, when making a bake well tart, had to scoop out all of the filling because she'd forgotten to put the jam in. I teased her about it for many years; just imagine how thrilled she was when I confessed to making a victoria sponge with plain flour.

I didn't realise until it came out of the oven resembling a biscuitshock.

I am about to make a fruit crumble. Using MacDougalls Crumble Mix. Delicious. Gave up on the pies thing long ago. Too fiddly.

jings?

I like my crumble mix with oats and brown sugar jings it just makes it more crumbly somehow. I make a big batch and keep it in the freezer.

I made toad-in-the-hole yesterday and grabbed the wrong milk - almond milk which is slightly sweet - now that was a very funny-tasting lunch!

Not quite the same but found my dark glasses in the freezer after they had been missing for 2 days, DH thought it was hilarious.

I tried that a while back tanith (friend does it like that).but I don't like as crunchy topping. More a shortbready one.

When my friend and I worked in a cafe in Cornwall we used to bake all our own cakes and she used to make a lovely chocolate, apple and walnut slice. One day she forgot the baking powder and it came out as a solid slab. Rather than throw it away we cut it up and sold it as "Continental Slices" it sold like hot cakes grin

Where was that Deedaa? I worked in Tintagel and Boscastle @ 1969 [Terry Dangers fish and chip shop and Mrs Pipers Cream tea café].We used to have to cut a Lyons apple pie into 8 slices and run the gauntlet of angry customers expecting more at the former sad.

That's nothing, Tegan In the summer vacation of . . ummm . . 1958, I worked for a while in the "cafe" at Brighton roller skating rink (small counter in a corner, selling crisps, lemonade, filled rolls and . . . bread pudding) The first day, the manageress showed us how to make the bread pudding. She crumbled some surplus rolls into water, added a handful of sultanas, bunged it into a cake tin and cooked it, and cut it into squares. The rolls were ones that had been unused and stored for some time. They were green with mould! She said it sold like hot cakes. Then she went away and left us to it for the rest of the week.

What she didn't know was that we spent some of the till money on marge, milk and eggs, and made a decent version - the regulars commented on how it was extra good this time!
