AIBU to absolutely hate squeeze bottles why can't we have everything in glass like before I have just wrestled with a honey squeezy that just doesn't want to give up its contents what's your least liked kitchen item

Jar tops that will NOT undo! I spend ages sticking them under running taps and struggling with a tea towel to help grip `em!

merlotgran Thu 05-Jan-17 23:59:06

The tops of bottles of bleach that you have to squeeze hard and twist at the same time.

I'm obviously losing my grip. grin

The older woman's problems with arthritic thumbs kicks in.

"Typically, patients complain of pain localised to the base of the thumb. ... arthritis increases with age and is seen predominantly in postmenopausal women."

It's because we women have spent our lives doing more of the house work.

chelseababy Fri 06-Jan-17 05:15:55

callgirl have you tried using a kitchen glove for grip? Either just put over the lid or put the glove on. It works for me!

Marmite does not work in squeezeable bottle, not just me, son too was moaning too. I accepted substitution on supermarket order, never again. Glass in future, and recyclable.

Nellie the paragraph you quoted is definitely me. I wasn't aware of that.
I find the best solution to stubborn jar lids is to pierce them with a sharp knife to release pressure, they then open fairly easily.
I don't like the squeeze and twist tops either but my pet hate is the "tear along dotted line" if only it were that easy !!

BlueBelle Fri 06-Jan-17 08:38:29

Seacliff I won't use marmite in squeezes either and have you noticed how much gets left behind I ve got a honey squeezy had it upside down as needed went to use it yesterday and it didn't want to come out ( my house is cold) I was trying to squeeze it out but the sides all went in on themselves and seemed pretty solid eventually it dribbled out I hate it
I usually end up cutting them in the end as so much gets left behind
I avoid when possible but sometimes there isn't a substitute

I can't stand the packs of cooked meat. They have a little corner that you are supposed to pull to open. The little corner piece, if I can grasp it, nearly always pulls off and I have to get a knife out to open it. I also dislike the squeezy mayonnaise and ketchup.

Christinefrance Fri 06-Jan-17 08:54:54

My husband thinks I have a problem with my thumb because I keep it so firmly pressed on his head ! grin

Squeezy bottles can be annoying insofar as it's hard to get at the remnants. When a container allows it, I tend to turn it upside down balance it on top of a nearly full replacement and let the last vestiges drain into that, works well with ketchup and liquid clothes washing solution, but depends on the opening really. Not sure whether I've tried it with honey but do usually buy it in the smaller squeezy containers rather than a jar.

Greyduster Fri 06-Jan-17 09:31:49

I agree about squeezy sauce bottles; they are better than glass ones, but I have stopped buying other things, like honey, in squeezy bottles. I also wish they would make a straight sided Marmight jar, to make it easier to get out all the contents, but it is iconic so that won't happen.

There's a great wee tool called a Jar Key, callgirl1. Got mine from Betterware, I think. You use it something like a bottle opener and it releases the vacuum in the jar/lid.

gillybob Fri 06-Jan-17 09:42:19

I jam bleach bottles in the door frame. Works a treat!

callgirl1 I have one of these - it helps to twist open jars and bottle tops and has a firm grip and lots of different sizes. Would not be without it.

I like squeezy bottles - you can always remove the whole top and scrape out with a knife when you get to the last bit.

wildrose Fri 06-Jan-17 10:12:38

I tend to liquify the last bit of these products by microwaving both glass and plastic bottles (supported in a Pyrex bowl) in the microwave for 15 second or so on full power. It always does the trick for me.

wildrose Fri 06-Jan-17 10:14:03

Microwaving in the microwave?! Of course I meant heating in the microwave blush

pen50 Fri 06-Jan-17 10:18:07

I only use golden syrup once a year - some of my Christmas cooking needs it - and I must say that I do prefer the squeezy bottles to the old tins...

rosesarered Fri 06-Jan-17 10:19:20

Christine grin
Yes, Bluebelle I think squeezy bottles are the devils spawn!
A tip for opening stubborn jars...hit the lid in four places with a knife handle, it releases pressure.
Getting into vacuum packed meat and fish has me swearing like a trooper.

Neversaydie Fri 06-Jan-17 10:21:39

Lakeland (?) do a round piece of tough plastic (rubber?)with ridges on that you use to grip a jar or bottle -quite cheap .I find tapping the lid hard on the floor often releases it too .And yes in extremes door frame ....

floorflock Fri 06-Jan-17 10:26:28

How about ring pulls. Although these aren't all the same, some are easier than others. I particularly find that a soup brand that starts with B and ends in axters has terrible ring pulls and I end up wearing the soup, so does the work top and anything else nearby!

boggles Fri 06-Jan-17 10:29:48

To open any new jar just tap gently on the floor. Opens immediately.

Elrel Fri 06-Jan-17 10:35:12

Sardine tins! Vacuum packed fish! Bleach and loo cleaner with press and twist. Most longlife milk containers!

rosesarered Fri 06-Jan-17 10:35:53

Or tap on Dh's head?

moobox Fri 06-Jan-17 10:36:34

Stick the honey bottle in the microwave to get the final squeeze out.

I hate a face serum I have that is gloopy in consistency yet has a drop in the bottle. it just doesnt work
