My thoughts exactly vq - it just made me angry that she was attempting to turn what was a civilised and reasonable discussion into a race issue. There is enough genuine racism around without inventing some.

There is a lot of racism and bigotry around and, if it is fairly evident that there is a good chance that it is at the core of a particular contentious issue, I think it is right to bring the issue into the open.

However, in the particular case that you mention, it seems to me that the reporter was trying to make a fairly run of the mill issue into something much more confrontational - to make the item more "interesting" from a journalistic point of view. I deplore that sort of manipulation.

The radio presenter was trying to make it into a bigger story than it really is.

The perils of Local radio and an ignorant presenter.

I guess the 'new ' owner holds a British passport, and may he succeed in his enterprise

It is the number one 'go to' for 'some people' to throw words like racist /_racism, xenophobic / xenophobia, bigot / bigotry around at the drop a hat.

Ironically there are times when those same people in return do not appreciate that occasionally they could be thought of as thinking in a racist /xenophobic / bigoted manner.

First some background. Residents of a small village are objecting to an application for a shop to change it's planning use to "hot food outlet". The objections are the additional traffic, lack of parking, litter etc. The shop owner has only had one offer to purchase it, from someone who runs a Chinese takeaway in a nearby village. After interviewing the residents the local radio presenter interviewed the man who wants to open the takeaway - one of her first questions was "do you think this is down to racism). The man seemed totally taken aback by such a question and just said no. Up until that point no-one had mentioned racism, or made any comment about the fact it was a Chinese takeaway. Now AIBU to be annoyed that the radio presenter was trying to introduce the subject of racism when it had not previously reared its ugly head.
