To expect him to throw it away

S only eats one type of cereal. I've just asked why he's not eating breakfast. "I don't have any cereal" when I made my list Friday I noted two boxes in the cupboard so didn't buy more. When I commented to S he told me they were empty, the thing is he won't eat the last half portion because of the crumbs at the bottom of the packet but he knows I will. So instead of chucking them he'd left them for me but hadn't thought to write cereal on the shopping list blackboard which just happens to hang right next to the cupboard where the cereal is or even mention it to me angry
Do you have similar problems in your house ?

Imperfect27 Sun 27-Aug-17 09:14:10

Not exactly, but it does seem to fall to me to dispose of end of packets / old stuff in the fridge. I have gone through phases of thinking he will do it - especially as he is the main cook - but no. And he is prone to saying 'We've got lettuce / tomatoes,' etc. when all that is left is past its best.

But he does take the bins out smile.

Buy him those tiny "variety packs"??
Or dig your heels in and say you will buy more when it is finished

I'm neurotic about always having 'stock' - Eg another mayo, tom sauce etc in the cupboard. DH isn't. angry

Yes well, having just run the last quarter of my cereal box through the colander to get rid of the crumby bit at the bottom I don't think I'm in any position to judge. I so get where he's coming from!

DH is like that, Kitty. He hoards all sorts of things. There are 2 huge plastic containers taking up a lot of cupboard space, one of cornflakes and one of rice krispies, that he bought when he had a craze on chocolate krispies. That was about 3 years ago. But will he let me throw them away? Or give them to the hens?

merlotgran Sun 27-Aug-17 09:51:51

We hardly ever eat breakfast cereal these days but I buy it when we have visitors. All the crumby stuff at the bottom of the packet is added to the dog food.

They love it.

FarNorth Sun 27-Aug-17 09:56:20

Why worry ninathenana?
Just eat your cereal and tell him to buy some if he doesn't have any.

FarNorth Sun 27-Aug-17 09:57:40

Ps, maybe not unreasonable but a bit weird to want half full boxes of cereal to be thrown away.

ffinnochio Sun 27-Aug-17 10:09:34

Does he add anything else that runs out to the shopping list? If not then I don't suppose it'll even cross his mind to do so. He did leave them for you. How about combining the two half boxes, give them a good shake for the crumbs to fall to bottom.

Jam in our house! I rarely eat it, but DH is a connoisseur, especially home made. But he get bored 2/3rd of the way down the jar and they reside on the top shelf of the fridge until they are converted into pudding!

ninathenana Sun 27-Aug-17 11:04:39

FarNorth they are not half full they have half a portion in each, a third of which is crumbs. He dosen't do shopping due to his ASD which is possibly why he wont eat the crumbs. I was just miffed he hadn't said.
Yes he does write things on the list.
kitty I have spares of nearly everything too but because there were two pkts I assumed one open and a spare.
I just wondered if anyone else had to put up with food put away that isn't worth saving.

Greyduster Sun 27-Aug-17 11:14:58

DH has muesli which he keeps in a plastic cereal container. When he gets about three quarters of the way down it, he buys more and tops it up again instead of using it all up and the refilling it. Whether any of the old stuff ever makes it to the top is anyone's guess. Some of it must have been in there since Adam was a lad! grin. There is a box of chocolate pillows and a box of cereal hoops in my cupboard which GS told me he absolutely could not live without and then promptly decided he didn't like them!! I suppose I could make jewellery out of the hoops...... ?.

When my son was at home he sometimes did the same. There would be a little bit left of something which he wouldn't eat as it was crumbs/not enough/not fresh enough but didn't throw out. He would also expect me to magically know we needed stuff only he used when I shopped.

Lisalou Sun 27-Aug-17 12:05:22

I like the idea of giving crumbs to dog, as i dont like em either - until now, i have put crumbs in new packet to "mix em in" but will now use dog trick - thank you merlotgran!
My gripe on such things is when there is a "spoonful" of something left over put in the fridge (one meatball and three peas sort of thing) which of course, nobody wants! If I catch it in time, it goes to Dog, but sometimes gets stuck in tupperware and wedged at back of fridge until i empty the damn thing to clean it. By then, it is a whole range of interesting colours and has a life of its own, grrrrrr.

The birds eat our crumbs. I am notorious for not using things up completely - if a liquid soap is near the bottom out it goes and a fresh one in its place. My accountant sister is appalled by my wastefulness but then again she counts the potatoes at dinner when I just want everyone to have plenty and more besides.

Norah Sun 27-Aug-17 16:19:33

I leave our crumbs to the birds. DH has no notion that the food he favors does not just magically appear in the kitchen without a list. He has no idea what might be on offer or seasonal. It is better he had a job and I do the stocking.

I chuck 'em into the field at the back for the rats! Bread too.

DanniRae Sun 27-Aug-17 16:37:42

Ha Ha!! yggdrasil - enjoyed that video. Now where do I buy the magic coffee table and washing basket??

Day6 Sun 27-Aug-17 16:49:10

yggdrasil - that made me laugh. grin

Do they do the female version of the magic washing basket and coffee table I wonder?

lemongrove Sun 27-Aug-17 17:01:27

Am now thinking that I must have a dog, they sound so useful.
DH doesn't know anything about contents of fridge/freezer or larder/cupboards, but is happy to eat all that comes out of it.He enjoys staring into fridge too, or moving things about in there.?

Morgana Sun 27-Aug-17 20:59:14

I use any remaining cereal/crumbs to put round plants. Don't like using slug pellets. Seems to work.

Menopaws Mon 28-Aug-17 02:31:19

I love cereal dust, my favourite bit, send all unwanted bits to me

radicalnan Mon 28-Aug-17 10:38:09

Lemongrove. Dogs are amazingly useful.

When the recycle man asked me why, I don't use my little food waste bin, I said 'I am a fat girl with a dog' and he knew straightaway how that worked.
