Odd things we do without realising it

I have just realised that I clean my teeth with my eyes closed, odd?! Anyone else do odd things, hope it's not just me?

I think I close my eyes when I clean my teeth too - probably a natural part of concentrating on the job!

I'm sure we all have our quirks and that what seems 'normal ' to us in many instances might seem odd to others.

Maybe my 'odd' is my food rituals. I don't mind having exactly the same for breakfast and lunch - porridge / crackers, a tiny bit of cheese / cream, an apple ... day in, day out. I don't need variety! Would be fed up if the evening meal were the same though.smile

Keeping eyes closed prevents the toothpaste spraying into the eyes, peppermint stings.
I always put left leg into trousers first but put on right shoe before left.

I close my eyes too, but to avoid toothpaste splash. I have several odd habits. When dishing up my dinner I have to place the protein at 8 o'clock, carb at 12 and veg at 4. When eating a bag of crisps or similar, I tip them onto a plate and eat the broken ones, smallest first, and finish with the largest intact ones. Don't ask me why!

At least I don't do the same as Rylan Clark who admitted on TV that when in the toilet for a 'number 2' he has to remove all clothing, even right down to his socks! confused

Do you think some of our funny habits are left over from childhood?

Shysal, your crisp habit reminds me of my daughter when she was about 10, she loved spag.bol but would only eat it if I gave her the spaghetti in one bowl and the bolognaise in another. I might add that she did grow out of it. ?

Sounds like I'm not the only one, I will now be thinking f my other oddities

Yes, I close my eyes while cleaning my teeth. And I can only apply mascara if my mouth is wide open.

sunseeker Fri 15-Sep-17 10:17:46

Shysal I hadn't realised it but I do the same when serving up my dinner!! Trying to think of odd things I do (although I don't think of them as odd!). When locking up at night I follow the same pattern, close upstairs curtains, back down to close dining room curtains, lock front door, close kitchen blinds, close conservatory blinds, lock back door, close sitting room curtains - always in that order.

I always eat the most disliked item on my plate first saving my favourite food till last. This goes back to childhood when I had to eat food I hated. I'm sure many of us have memories of having to eat what was put in front of you, no chance of DM making something especially for yougrin

DD always picked the kidney beans out of Chilli con Carne, I tried to put only a few on her plate but my saying to her she had to eat a few was undone when her Half-S & OH were staying with us & I served Chilli & he proceeded to fish out the kidney beansgrin

I also close my eyes when cleaning my teeth!

KatyK Fri 15-Sep-17 10:31:33

Have you tried putting mascara on with your mouth closed? I can't do it!

RosemarySuperager Fri 15-Sep-17 11:06:02

I stand on one leg to clean my teeth so as to keep using my balance and keep up muscle skills. I think it will help to prevent falls which can be such a risk as you age. I started it deliberately and now it's just a habit.

lemongrove Fri 15-Sep-17 11:09:45

Another one here who closes eyes when teeth brushing, and mouth opens automatically when applying mascara, what strange beings humans are.?
No other quirks that I can think of at the moment.?

Lupin Fri 15-Sep-17 11:26:28

My electric toothbrush has a two minute timer. I've got into the habit of holding a towel under my chin to catch the inevitable dribbles and walk about from room to room while the toothbrush scrubs my teeth. While away, if I can't do this, I feel very impatient waiting for two minutes to go by.

GillT57 Fri 15-Sep-17 11:36:16

Mouth open putting on mascara. Have to put on lower parts of clothing first, i.e. pants before bra, then trousers before top. Although my house certainly isn't immaculate, I cannot leave the house with beds unmade.

Dh puts socks on first before anything else which I find very odd. Socks always go on last.

I usually run around and do little jobs whilst cleaning my teeth.

I always wipe my glasses on the nearest clean bit of cotton before I put them on - that is almost always the front of my tee shirt.

Recently I saw my little DGD (not yet 3) with my glasses in her hands - cleaning them on her tee shirt!

HannahLoisLuke Fri 15-Sep-17 11:56:52

Thanks Rosemary, I'm going to do the standing on one leg routine when teeth cleaning now. Sounds like an excellent idea!

lovebeigecardigans1955 Fri 15-Sep-17 12:11:03

I always eat the boiled egg of my salad last as it's the item I like most. It's my reward for chomping on the pieces of lettuce which I like the least.

HillyN Fri 15-Sep-17 12:52:01

I close my eyes in the morning to clean my teeth and at night I don't turn the light on. I find I can concentrate better by feeling which 'quadrant' I'm cleaning and I'm less likely to miss a bit. I also eat the least appetising food on my plate first and get really cross when my OH pinches a nice beefy chip from the ones I've been saving until last!

gillyknits Fri 15-Sep-17 13:12:25

My DH always puts his shoes on before trousers. He says this stops the trousers creasing if he had to bend or sit.down to put them on.
I have had to rescue him a few times when big shoe got stuck in tight trouser leg. grin

I never buy magazines but occasionally I acquire one or read one in a waiting room.
I've no idea why but when I read a magazine I go from the back page forward. ???

Coolgran65 Fri 15-Sep-17 13:33:29

Oh... I also brush my teeth with my eyes closed.

cloverpark Fri 15-Sep-17 13:39:36

Have you noticed that when young children start doing cutting out with scissors, how they open and close their mouths at the same time? I never realised with my own two, but when I worked at Playgroup, realised that's what happens, and now see it with my grandchildren.

Craftycat Fri 15-Sep-17 13:56:50

I close my eyes when blow drying my hair. Probably why I am not very good at it- I know why- I have very sensitive eyes & the warm air makes them water.
I stand on one leg to brush top teeth & the other leg to do bottom teeth- this was suggested to me by a Yoga teacher to help balance & strengthen legs. I have very strong legs & my balance is great!!
