To want a tattoo

I have over the last few months had the urge to get a tattoo. Just a small one on the inside of my wrist.

When I told my grown up daughters both of their responses were the same 'MOTHER' ( a term kept for when I want something they don't agree with) don't be so ridiculous.

I might add that they both have tattoos themselves al be it very discreet ones

My question is AIBU at 63 to want a small little tattoo

Have had a discussion with DD about tattoo inks, she is an expert on paint and ink and oversees worldwide health and safety aspects of them. Tattoo inks are not covered by any regulations and are imported from countries outside the EU, the only requirement is that a tattooist follows basic hygiene. At worst some of these inks can be carcinogenic but even a small amount of ink can cause skin sensitivities.

Love them or hate them - to have a tattoo is a personal choice, but do choose a good practitioner. Your daughters? Well, why have you even asked them??

Go for it! Visit a few parlours and get a look at their work.
Do you know what design you want? Remember, your body, your decision and tough if anyone doesn't like it, you don't need anyone's approval but your own!

I bought my youngest daughter one for her 18th birthday. She wanted a double headed dragon, her step dad designed it for her ??
I would love one myself, ( I have fybromyalgia and very pain sensitive, so worry it will hurt beyond anything I could stand)

I seriously think I have some kind of 'phobia' where tats are concerned. I have never seen one I like yet - no matter what it is! I don't understand why gorgeous young women with gorgeous skin, spoil a beautiful elegant dress showing big bluey tattoos on arms, chest, back. I want to lick my hanky and rub it off ha ha......

I don't know many people WITHOUT them t.b.h. and I know I am in the minority with disliking them so much but I would say if its what you want........go for it!

My daughter has asked me not to have it done until after her wedding next year so I have a while to think about it.

Flippin' cheek!

Both your daughter and her sister have tattoos but you can't have one until after her wedding hmm

Harrigran I too saw Sheridan Smith and was horrified at how she had covered her body in large tattoos which detracted from her obvious talent.

Sounds a good idea Kacee. I am sure that your daughter is relieved.
I never know why people do it. We can all look back to old photos and dreadful hair styles clothes etc but at least we were not stuck with them for life!
I suppose that if you get one at our age you have less years to regret it! You just need to put it somewhere that won't get too wrinkly!

Oh my, I was chatting to my grown up children at the weekend, I've decided I want a wee tattoo on the inside of my wrist.
I'm thinking of the outline of a Labrador, does anyone have any idea what that would cost?

I had a delicate flowery tat on my foot, symbolising my DC and DGSs for my 61st birthday, courtesy of my indulgent DD! Nine years on and I’d like to build on it to include my new GDD. I have my family with me every time I look at my foot no matter where I am ?

How long do temporary ones last?

Kacee Mon 06-Nov-17 20:18:20

I am going to try a temporary one for a bit just to make sure it's what I want.

My daughter has asked me not to have it done until after her wedding next year so I have a while to think about it.

Thank you all very much for your comments.

My friend who is in her 70s lost her son in a climbing accident. In his memory she has a beautifully delicate tattoo on her inner wrist/forearm. It is a heron sitting on a branch of almond blossom in a pale aqua colour.
It's beautiful.

If you want to have a tattoo then by all means have one. Just one question, 'WHY'?
Brian.

Magrithea Mon 06-Nov-17 18:30:17

Your body, your business!!

And a tramp stamp refers to the tattoo you see that goes across the whole of the lower back! My ex-SiL had one, nuff said! grin

Caroline123 Mon 06-Nov-17 09:12:14

Depends what you want on the tattoo!
I'm assuming it's not rude or offensive, so go for it! At 63 you can do what you want.

Lyneve Mon 06-Nov-17 09:11:31

Try having one of the one's you can wash off to see how you feel with it. I think it's a transfer.
Then you can make a more considered decision.
How would you feel about wearing the same bracelet or broach every day?
Hope this helps.

Saw Sheridan Smith on the TV last night and thought that her tattoos were so ugly, they were not discreet or particularly well done and just made her look like a chav.
This is a good actress with a nice singing voice but DH and I felt it was a shame that she saw the need to deface herself.

Caro1954 Mon 06-Nov-17 08:09:29

I hate them. DS has one on his tummy (which is now a bit bigger (the tummy!) than when he got it done). But we rarely see it so I mostly forget about it. DD talks about a small one occasionally but knows my views and it may be to wind me up, I think she will eventually. But my advice to you is - think about it carefully and then just do it! If it's what you want and makes you happy then it's nobody else's business. They seem to be addictive though!

maddy629 Mon 06-Nov-17 07:12:20

It is really nothing to do with them, is it? I have three tattoo's all done in my 50's, one on the inside of my wrist, one on my ankle and one on my hip and I've never regretted it.

keffie Mon 06-Nov-17 01:59:02

Their attitude would make me go out and do it. Yes I have tattoos. 17 as it stands. All pretty delicate ones.

Varying from roses, autumn leaves, butterflies, birds, Christian tattoo, daisy chain, my children, husband and grandchildren names, a dolphin, an angel praying over a baby in her cot, a dedication to my late mom, Japanese flower, my football club and the Greek flag tattoo. My next one will be a lion in colour wearing sunglasses.

Yes I am maverick, yes I am a Granna, my youngsters just say "oh mom is eccentric" correct

It's your body, no one else business. Your big enough to make your own decisions so do it. My 2 middle youngsters both wanted tattoos for their 18 birthday. Yup I paid for them.

I love them. Some people hang there art. I wear mine

MissAdventure Mon 06-Nov-17 00:00:44

Those who think they don't know anybody with a tattoo might be surprised if they knew the people that have secret ones.

Coco51 Sun 05-Nov-17 22:52:48

Just do it! DD and I have just had matching tats, and while browsing I found several more thst I would like - I disciplined myself to only have two little ones extra. I’m 66 and had the first one at 47. Beware, though that when you have one it’s bound to make you want more!

Granby Sun 05-Nov-17 21:09:03

Kacee, I had my first (and only) tattoo early this year. I'm 63, too. My kids and my friends were a bit shocked, but I'm so happy with it! I was worried about the pain, but it was just like a cat scratch. It's a small one, on my wrist. Go for it!!!

lovingit Sun 05-Nov-17 20:03:17

Go for it

lemongrove Sun 05-Nov-17 19:35:51

I don’t have any, and thinking about it, don’t know anybody who has had one done ( I will now be quizzing all and sundry about it,) grin
It’s entirely your own choice, but if you have got to this age without wanting one, I do wonder why now?
I also wonder about pink hair etc and any other thing that women only seem to contemplate in retirement.
