Today on PMQT Mrs May proudly announced that there are now less people in the UK living in absolute poverty than ever before.
ABSOLUTE POVERTY according to the UN
In 1995 Absolute poverty was defined as:
a condition characterised by severe deprivation of basic human needs, including food, safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, health, shelter, education and information. It depends not only on income but also on access to services.
Am I alone in thinking NO ONE in the UK should be living in Absolute Poverty and the fact that there are less is nothing to boast about.

mrsmopp, you asked Can anyone name a country where poverty does not exist??

I commented You now sound as if you believe that, just because poverty exists everywhere, we should do nothing about it. and then questioned Was that what you meant?

It seems as if it wasn't. Thank you for answering my question and clarifying this.

I have to admit though, I am still left wondering why being able to name a country where poverty does or doesn't exist is relevant. Whataboutery, which is what the question was - having nothing directly to do with levels of poverty in this country - does tend to mislead those reading the post where it occurs.

Graces gran, where on earth did I say we should do nothing about it? My last post clearly said we do need to do something about it. Surely we agree that much.

Someone in hospital having treatment for cancer, came out to have benefits cut, so had to use a foodbank.
The comments afterwards remind me of Gransnet. There's even one called lemoncake.

Once this is sorted, there should be no poverty, pensioner or otherwise.
Oh, well, we can but dream.

I think it will be GM. There are a variety of reasons why people may not pay it and I would think Pension Credit is a gateway benefit.

GrandmaMoira Tue 28-Nov-17 19:17:28

Thank you GracesGran. I wonder why it disregards council tax. Is it because you will get a rebate if on pension credit?

GracesGranMK2 Tue 28-Nov-17 18:18:19

I should have been clearer. The figure of £8534.79 is what it should be not what it is.

GracesGranMK2 Tue 28-Nov-17 18:17:01

There is a separate calculation for pensioners GM. The Joseph Rowntree Trust say that Pension Credit is now only 3% below what this should be. I calculate this to be £8534.79 p.a. This figure excludes rent and 85% of council tax.

The ONS says median household income is £26,300. This means that, if relative poverty is less than 60% of this, most single pensioners, including me, are in poverty. I don't consider I am in poverty. I don't have children to feed, nor do I have rent to pay.

No idea what happened there!
Definitely worth repeating, though.
