to think Gransnet shouldn't put threads on social media sites where they can't remove nasty comments?

Unfortunately, as for any public site, we can't legislate for journalists coming across threads and reporting them in newspapers. What we do advise is for people to use non-identifying usernames. If you are concerned that yours might be easily recognisable do get in touch and we can look into changing it for you

Lucy gransnet while you are there can you explain to me why you have to share these two groups why can you not have a fb group and this group why do you use the same threads for both it seems counter productive to me Can’t the fb gransneters think of anything to talk about can they not choose their own subjects ?

Hi MamaCaz, sorry - yes, we are able to hide and delete abusive comments if they come up on Facebook (we hadn't seen the one under the post in question, but have since hidden it). In all honesty, we don't really encounter it on our Facebook page very often at all - this was one of those rare occasions!

LucyGransnet As far as I can see, those other threads don't address my issue. Please could you confirm that you can -
and do - quickly delete nasty or abusive comments made on Facebook in relation to threads that you are sharing?

Unfortunately because of the risk of something appearing on Facebook or Twitter I think less and less people will be turning to GN for help and advice. I fully understand GN needing to attract more members but don't understand why we can't have a "private" thread accessed by members only which GN guarantee they will not share on Facebook or Twitter. If something is picked up by a newspaper and published then that would not be the fault of GN but I don't think that happens as often as GN posting on social media.

If that's correct, Jane, it is at least some comfort! Does that apply to the comments I am referring to - not those within the thread, but those left on the Facebook page that are about the thread?

Morning everyone, we've posted on the subject of FB and Twitter etc. before, but for those who haven't seen them, here are links to take you straight to a couple of them:

GN could remove abusive posts on FB if they wanted to.
If someone comments on something you’ve posted, you get a notification and you can delete the comment if you don’t like it.

I know what you mean, and in fact a quick look at some threads today reveal that a few posters do put an awful lot of info out there about themselves, where they live, medical things and things about all their relatives too! easily identifiable.

MamaCaz Mon 04-Dec-17 10:23:47

I agree with you both, about the personal privacy aspect, but my main concern was that Gransnet is opening people up to a potential torrent of uncontrollable abuse on those other platforms..

Personally, I would be hugely upset to discover that I was receiving insults and abuse elsewhere, as a result of something I had posted on here, even if I knew that I couldn't be identified!

lemongrove is right mamacaz, there has been much debate in here recently about transfer to other sites. It sits uncomfortably with me too but I fear nothing we can do other than be very, very careful what we post.

The thing is MamaCaz that we all know now that the threads on GN end up in many other places. We have to be careful not to put personal things on here which could identify ourselves.

Checking Facebook, I accidently brought up the comments on oa thread currently running here on Gransnet.. Initially, just two comments were showing, and one of them said of "Horrible bitch no need to spoil the magic". To begin with, II wrongly thought that was aimed at the poster. In fact, it meant her DiL However, the following comments soon used the same term for the poster. Irrelevant anyway, as it's a nasty comment regardless of who it refers to.

That comment, I thought, was bad enough, but it also made me think how much worse it could get. Is it fair to open members up to such uncontrolled abuse? Here on Gransnet, at least very unpleasant comments can be quickly removed, but not so on these other platforms. It seems very wrong to me!

What's more, it's yet another family issue that could easily be recognised by the dil in question or her friends on Facebook, and the consequences could be huge!
