Seething!!!!

I am fortunate to have a large drive and am happy for my neighbours with smaller drives to park on it as long as I can get in an out. New Years day I saw a strange car on the drive, parked in such a way as to prevent me getting out. I assumed it belonged to a guest of my next door neighbour and ignored it until I needed to leave the house at mid-day. Rang my neighbour, not his. I then had to go along the street knocking on all the doors to find out who it belonged to. Eventually found it was a neighbour at the far end of the street, who has never spoken to me. I asked if the car could be moved as I was going out. The neighbour said the owner was still in bed but that she would tell him

After 20 minutes I went back and said I was still waiting for the car to be moved to be told the owner was in the shower!! Again said I was waiting to go out and could someone else move it only to be told he didn't like anyone else driving his car and that I was being unreasonable as he wouldn't be much longer!! Told them that I didn't care if he was stark naked the car had better be moved immediately as I was going to ring a friend who owned a tow truck and lived 5 minutes away to come and move it for me (I don't!) A young man with wet hair and looking very angry arrived and moved the car.

Now the reason I am seething - was speaking to my next door neighbour today and he said that the first neighbour is telling everyone how unreasonable I was! angry

Sorry just felt the need to rant to someone!!!

It's all down to manners isn't it, the young man should have been booted out of his bed, pj'd, naked, whatever, ran down the road to you, apologised profusely, moved car, back in an hours time with very large bunch of flowers for you! I know, I live in a fantasy world, I would have been hopping with rage as well

Tegan2 Wed 03-Jan-18 12:32:58

Don't blame you for feeling angry; I'd be, too.

emmasnan Wed 03-Jan-18 12:53:59

I'd be furious, they should apologise to you.

cornergran Wed 03-Jan-18 13:15:59

Incredibly bad manners to block you in, more so not to move it instantly. I truly don’t understand how anyone who has never spoken to you would think it was an ok thing to do, even if the car had been parked sensibly. To answer your question, of course you aren’t being unreasonable. I’d be levitating.

NannyTee Wed 03-Jan-18 13:17:26

Downright cheek of some people!!!

kittylester Wed 03-Jan-18 13:40:19

That is awful! tchangry

I think we should send the grans in to teach them some manners!!

glammanana Wed 03-Jan-18 13:42:19

Cheek of it I would have given him a bill for parking as for you being unreasonable they are most likely full of guilt for being such thoughtless neighbours all your other neighbours are not like that so just ignore them.

harrigran Wed 03-Jan-18 13:45:18

If it is your drive then it is private property and basically he was trespassing.
You were way too polite, I would have had the police tow it away.
I have a sign in my window which says MERCEDES CAR PARKING ONLY, all others will be towed away.

Greyduster Wed 03-Jan-18 13:54:22

I read your post to my DH, who said he would have dragged the bloke out of the shower bodily and kicked him up the road to move his car! Never one for the patient approach, then, but who would be, faced with such collosal bad manners. Not surprised you are seething!

Jalima1108 Wed 03-Jan-18 14:02:24

How rude!
We don't mind if neighbours park on our drive as long as no-one blocks us in and we're not expecting visitors - and they always ask first.

merlotgran Wed 03-Jan-18 14:11:19

I like your style, Oldwoman

Don't worry about the other neighbours. It will serve as a reminder to them not to piss you off when leaving their cars in your drive. grin

BlueBelle Wed 03-Jan-18 14:13:45

Don’t you have gates or something because I d keep them closed if you do Stop being too kind people are taking the p... I d be seething too and put up a big No Parking sign

Baggs Wed 03-Jan-18 15:33:00

There's something to be said for living at the end of a shock-absorber-wrecking lumpy bumpy twisty track then ?

I'd be seething too, OW ????

The neighbours who know you won't be deceived by the malicious gossip.

Christinefrance Wed 03-Jan-18 15:40:37

I can't believe people would have such cheek OldWoman

I would be furious too, I agree with kittylester send in the grans !! angry

Thanks for the replies, I really just wanted to have a rant and get it off my chest!

I don't have gates and wouldn't want to go to the expense of having them installed.

My neighbours are (mostly) very nice and I wouldn't want to take it out on them because one has been so rude. My next door neighbour has suggested I put up a sign "neighbours feel free to park as long as you don't block me in - except the shits living in No ... who will immediately be towed!"

Oldwoman70 Wed 03-Jan-18 15:51:35

phoenix grin.

annodomini Wed 03-Jan-18 16:47:51

I would have called the police as I have done when thoughtless people have blocked my entry - not many in 17 years, but those few have been 'booked'.

NfkDumpling Wed 03-Jan-18 16:53:50

A simple sign saying Private Drive would make it clear to all that they park only with your permission.

If a neighbour is going to take advantage perhaps it may be an idea to ask those who do use it for their car details so you can be sure whose car it is, then you can be picky!

Does anyone know if there is any liability on the property owner if a car parked there is damaged?

Luckygirl Wed 03-Jan-18 16:59:50

So he was actually parked on YOUR drive!!!

Day6 Wed 03-Jan-18 17:11:06

It's bad enough that you had to go out and knock on doors to discover who had been so thoughtless Oldwoman. That they didn't respond instantly and apologise says a lot about them. You had every right to threaten him with a tow truck when he didn't make the effort to hurry up and move his car from your drive. How dare your neighbour criticise you for your actions when she knows exactly who was in the wrong! I'd seethe too. Reasonable people in the wrong would reflect, bring you a bunch of flowers and apologise for the trouble they'd caused. If only the world worked like that, eh?

lemongrove Wed 03-Jan-18 17:14:37

In future only tell the neighbours that you like that they can do this otherwise it will happen again, you have been kind and taken advantage of.

NanaandGrampy Wed 03-Jan-18 17:29:07

Maybe next time you see his car, block him in and see how he likes it??

Just plain bad manners !! Id make it plain to that particular neighbour that they cannot under any circumstances park on your drive.
