Well, just that really. grin

phoenix whispers very quietly, dons tin helmet and tiptoes off to hide behind the sofa to wait for the fallout

I've just scrolled down and it only seems to be the Games threads at the moment.

I agree though. Why?

It does prevent you tripping over them though.

merlotgran Fri 15-Jun-18 22:52:24

Oops. Two thoughs. hmm

ninathenana Fri 15-Jun-18 22:55:06

So you can't fail to notice them ??

Chewbacca Fri 15-Jun-18 22:56:11

I DON'T KNOW PHOENIX! ? I'd also like to know why some posters have BIG SHOUTY words in the middle of their posts too. It feels like someone is yelling in your face whilst talking to you.

SueDonim Fri 15-Jun-18 23:08:47

I AGREE with you, PHOENIX. There's no need to SHOUT when you can easily add emphasis such as this or this or this.

wink

WHAT? (Am a little hard of hearing.) grin

Nanabilly Sat 16-Jun-18 10:22:10

I've never noticed any .

MawBroon Sat 16-Jun-18 10:25:14

Maybe because we are seen to be a bit hard of hearing?
Or possibly because nobody noticed their “Caps lock” was on and when you “review” a thread you don’t get to see the title.
Oh for an Edit facility ??

I've always ..even when writing longhand ..used CAPITALS as emphasis .Its only since people started using computers/laptops etc that it has been seen as SHOUTING .I cant see why people get annoyed about it at all.Its just letters on a page .

Lisalou Sat 16-Jun-18 12:10:08

Paddyann, I guess because it has been deemed rude by someone in the world of computer text!

Chewbacca Sat 16-Jun-18 12:16:07

It's etiquette not to type in capital letters in emails or online forums, according to www.skillsyouneed.com. "It can be perceived as shouting; aggression or attention seeking and should only be used as a last resort. It's rude, so best not to do it unless you really do want to shout at someone "

paddyann Sat 16-Jun-18 12:30:28

so because one eegit thinks it should be deemed rude, the sheeple all follow suit? I'm losing the will to live with this site .I did think more mature people had more sense.Apparently not.

Chewbacca Sat 16-Jun-18 13:00:53

It isn't just this site that "deemed it rude" Paddyann. If you look at the link I provided, or even just Google it, you'll see that it's common knowledge. smile

Following the rules of etiquette has nothing to do with following like sheep paddyann. Etiquette for example discourages people from eating with their mouths open and as with the use of capital letters, following the 'rules' is simply showing consideration and good manners to others.

SueDonim Sat 16-Jun-18 13:06:30

It's not a case of 'sheeple' at all, Paddyann.

Everyone today is negotiating their way through a new form of communication. We all know that the written word can have a very different nuance from words that are spoken because they lack the content that accompanies the spoken word. There are no facial indicators, no body gestures that tell us whether someone is joking or deadly serious.

We then need to fall back on how the words are written. Green pen? Red pen? Written in a hasty scrawl? Lovingly crafted? With type, we don't even have those indicators hence new ways are being created to decipher the meaning and feelings behind the typing. I think that's even more important when, as on GN, we are communicating with anonymous people about whom we know nothing.

As for 'letters on a page', that's all any written word is. There were words in common usage 50 years ago that no decent person would dream of using nowadays and also vice versa. It's not that hard to keep up with changing times.

It is officially deemed as shouting Paddyann and people can be disciplined at work if they do this in emails at least in NHS and I'm sure other places too. Sometimes it is an accident or that the other person is not used to typing/emails/texts so people need to be mindful of that.

As we get used to the new ways we see things differently. Capital letters in a post always stand out to me now and I just envisage the writer bellowing at the rest of us. It's the way things are. Times change, and sometimes we need to change with them.

I'm with Paddyann on this. I've always used caps for emphasis rather than shouting and I don't feel I am being shouted at if I see caps in headlines, but frankly, I don't give a D smile More things to get my knickers in a twist over ha ha

Pebbles77 Sun 08-Jul-18 18:38:07

People just don’t know about texting rules etc
Not everybody understands social GRACES

Menopaws Sun 08-Jul-18 19:40:49

WHAT!

janemar Sun 08-Jul-18 20:12:28

I think there are some angry people that like to shout online as it is safer and kinder than doing it to "real people".

pollyperkins Sun 08-Jul-18 20:26:03

Well on my phone it's not easy to work out how to do italics or bold. in fact I've only just found out how to do it. I think!

pollyperkins Sun 08-Jul-18 20:26:35

Hooray! First time I've done that!
