Everyone I know has been having a go at me for daring to say this. But I can't cope with this weather much longer. It is relentless and although we have fans the heat has built up over the last weeks to the point where they are just blowing hot air around. I can't sleep and I am sweaty all the time and I am praying for rain

Fennel Thu 26-Jul-18 16:46:36

For those of us on the east thunderstorms expected within the next few days. Tonight and tomorrow for us (NE).

ginny Thu 26-Jul-18 12:31:43

I suspect for many car drivers it is the best thing to be doing , given that many cars have air con.
No point moaning, we can do nothing about it. Soon be cold, wet and windy but no use moaning about that either.

MissAdventure Thu 26-Jul-18 10:48:07

29 degrees here today already. No rain, no breeze.
I have just ordered a cool towel thingy though.

Meant not read

MagicWriter2016 Tue 24-Jul-18 19:05:58

Have read all eight pages of posts, but thought I would share a couple of tips I heard today re keeping cool.

Keep curtains/blinds pulled all day, only opening them at night with the windows. I know when we went to Australia and stayed with a relative, I would get up in the morning, open all the curtains/blinds and doors/windows and my sister in law would be running behind me doing the opposite. She is an Aussie and thought I was mad. I thought she was mad as a Scot who rarely sees the sun ha ha.

Put a small bowl of water in front of your fan and it acts a bit like air conditioning. Make sure the bowl is reasonably shallow or it won't work.

We have had beautiful weather up in NE Scotland, but always a good few degrees below those down south. And as someone else has said, being retired/not working does help.

Good post Maw. It could be something that we're going to have to get used to. If I live that long!
Driving in the SE must be a nightmare though - hoping to hear from husband soon that he's ok.

MawBroon Tue 24-Jul-18 19:00:49

Given that the weather, in the southern half of the country at least, is unlikely to change, is there any point in wasting energy fretting about it?
Lifestyles must change if at all possible and the majority of us are lucky enough for that to be possible. OK not everybody, there are those who work, those with childcare commitments and those with appointments to keep. Been there, done that, trekking up and down to the Royal Free in London, but we are in the main luckier than commuters stuffed like sardines into the 7.30, that is if it hadn’t been cancelled.
Today I enjoyed the comfort of the aircon in John Lewis and Waitrose, hanging around the chiller cabinets in the latter so long, the security chap was beginning to give me funny looks.
This too shall pass and perhaps sooner than I think as there is thunder forecast for Friday ??
And then it will warm up again, but what can’t be cured, must be endured.

A dog cooling mat in this weather is wonderful for ME available from Monster Pets

travelsafar Tue 24-Jul-18 18:44:29

lollee i said the same to my DH just a few moments ago. I feel like i am being lazy and wasting time as i just can not get stuck into anything at the moment. I am either on the PC or watching TV from the afternoon until i go to bed which is not me at all. Even our bowls match was cancelled this afternoon due to the heat it would have been too dangerous to play outside. I am due into work tomorrow morning doing care work so i know i will be wasted in the afternoon. Then at this time tomorrow evening i will be at the hospital waiting to have an MRI scan done and i am dreading the car journey to the hospital as i know the traffic will still be quite heavy and it will be hot hot hot!!!

lollee Tue 24-Jul-18 18:19:03

I am sitting right now with a damp tea towel around my head, i put it in the fridge every so often. At night, cool shower then lie on top of the bed before dropping off quite quickly. I am so heat exhausted and had so many plans for painting outside of house, gardening etc but am just wasting so many days and hours sitting indoors trying to keep cool.

MissAdventure Tue 24-Jul-18 16:52:35

Me too.
Still, its going to cool down to 23 degrees by 11pm tonight. sad

Bellanonna Tue 24-Jul-18 16:33:38

Rain? Oh, I wish....

MissAdventure Tue 24-Jul-18 16:14:04

Still 27 here.
There was just about three spots of rain, but that seems to have passed.

Stansgran Tue 24-Jul-18 13:31:51

I have ankles in the morning but puddingy feet in the evening. Not good in the heat as I used to be red haired and pale skin. Much cooler today and drizzle this morning. I do love putting the washing out early and having it dry and indoors at five. Every cloud and all that.

Rosina Tue 24-Jul-18 09:55:36

I am reaching the stage where heat induced obscenities are about to start. I have to make four visits tomorrow and one of the people I call on has her heating on full blast even in these conditions. I may make an excuse and hope that next week is slightly better.

MissAdventure Tue 24-Jul-18 09:07:05

Its hot for the foreseeable future, I think, Rosina.
I have a funeral to go to today, and trying to get ready is proving rather sweat inducing!
I've left a bath of cold water to plunge into just before I leave.
My phone says its 27 here already.

Rosina Tue 24-Jul-18 08:32:12

I have just read that the temperature is likely to reach 35 by this weekend...oh joy. Has anyone read a forecast that gives a ray of hope for weather allowing a fairly normal life ?

Katek Tue 24-Jul-18 08:21:11

You could all decamp to my neck of the woods for a GN mega meet up! Very pleasant and comfortable 20c here. (NE Scotland)

MawBroon Tue 24-Jul-18 08:10:09

All fairly common knowledge and normal practice to most of us I think Margaret, perhaps you need to enlighten your brother!

MargaretX Mon 23-Jul-18 21:13:42

Life in hot weather is different and opening windows and putting fans on does not help. We often have over 30° and I have learned to live differntly in the heat.

Get up early and let the cool air through the house then close all windows and doors. You may have 27 ° inside then keep it that way and dont let any heat in. If you have an outside umbrella then fix it to shade the windows outside,
Take a cool shower late afternoon and wear along floating nightdress or some kind of loose garment and drink a lot of water, better mineral water and you'll find it tastes better when your body really needs the salts in it.
You know that in Italy they always have their shutters down and in Germany we have outside blinds and awnings. But nobody opens windows when its 3O°+

I have almost passed out in the Uk stayng with my brother who opened windows and kept the boiler on.

Am trying to look on the bright side. The apricot tree in the back garden has ripening fruit this year and the grapes are coming along well.

watermeadow Mon 23-Jul-18 20:38:16

Most dogs dislike hot weather so I’m a dog.
Those of you who love it and come to life in the heat are clearly tortoises.

Luckygirl Mon 23-Jul-18 19:41:03

29 in the shade here on Welsh border. I usually love it, but with a lively 5year old all day it feels a bit much!

Fennel Mon 23-Jul-18 19:38:35

Thanks petra - I'll tell him. He's staying with DD1 tonight, further west.

petra Mon 23-Jul-18 17:56:15

Fennel
I hope he's staying or leaving late. Yesterday was bad for getting out.
