AIBU to be amazed at people posting this on Facebook

O.k. so there's a question and answer thing going around about pregnancy and birth on Facebook. Starts off innocent enough e.g. did you have morning sickness, were you induced etc. Then slipped in amongst the 15+ questions is full name of child, date of birth, place of birth etc. Now could this information not be useful for illegal immigrants to get a birth certificate passport etc. And keep this information for cloning people in the future. Or have I got paranoia in my old age lol.

Mapleleaf Mon 08-Oct-18 19:18:10

Certainly sounds very unwise.

sazz1 Mon 08-Oct-18 20:20:16

Thats what I thought and 2 of my relatives have put exact details for each child. I put a comment that it was a bit confidential to go on Facebook.

PECS Mon 08-Oct-18 20:44:41

Certainly an unwise move to give so much personal information. Not sure it would be particularly illegal immigrants! Not sure I would have made that connection... but all kinds of uses for organised crime of all sorts and by all sorts!

MissAdventure Mon 08-Oct-18 21:09:07

Its amazing that people are prepared to answer such questions, and there we are, worrying about child/teen safety online.

Bathsheba Mon 08-Oct-18 21:56:31

These sorts of Q&A things pop up fairly regularly on FB and, worryingly, people do answer them and publish their answers, thinking it's 'just for fun'.
If only they could stop, for just a couple of seconds, and think before they committed the information to the internet, I'm sure many would realise how foolish they're being.

M0nica Mon 08-Oct-18 22:39:37

None of these questionnaires are 'just for fun'. They are used to draw up profiles of all those who respond and their responses to be cross checked against other questionnaires they have filled in to draw up profiles that are used for marketing purposes and sold on for that purpose.

With all of those details it would not be hard to request a Birth Certificate then open a fraudulent bank acccount.
When I first went on to FB I filled in one of the 'how many countries have you visited' questionaires. I only got rid of Trip Advisor a few months ago !!!

sazz1 Tue 09-Oct-18 09:40:57

Well my comment about it being too confidential for Facebook worked. They have both deleted it but as it was on for over 24hrs it's probably too late as anyone could have screen shot it.

Harris27 Tue 09-Oct-18 10:42:25

Oh ing is private anymore don't give them the ammunition!

Harris27 Tue 09-Oct-18 10:43:01

Sorry nothing.

sarahellenwhitney Tue 09-Oct-18 10:47:30

As a non face' booker' what compels people to divulge so much of their personal details ?

GabriellaG Tue 09-Oct-18 10:58:38

Wow! No way Josè angry
I'm not on fb anyway. It's an invidious creeping sickness pervading every corner of your life.

Mumsyface Tue 09-Oct-18 11:04:25

Whilst I am happy with the desire to yell one’s joy from the rooftops I am inclined to be circumspect about personal data and pics of (other peoples) children on Facebook.

Willow10 Tue 09-Oct-18 11:04:57

Gabriella - I'm with you!

Rosina Tue 09-Oct-18 11:07:03

I can't understand why people do this either - I don't even like my GC's photos to be on FB although I have no choice in the matter and keep my mouth firmly shut. I am not reclusive by any means but a reserved person and I would be horrified to find my name, address and details of my life on the internet. People have had really bad experiences with trolls, stalkers, unwanted attention from other posters and so on - and then they get upset and wonder why it is happening. You would think that 'World Wide' might give them a clue before they start posting, but particularly for the young it seems an exciting platform for their ideas, clothes and of course the cult of 'OMG'.

Margs Tue 09-Oct-18 11:24:08

EXTREMELY unwise!!! This sounds like the practice of Phishing - and once the details are given then they're out there for good.

No, no, no.

Myym Tue 09-Oct-18 11:28:09

Wow GabriellaG,
Your sweeping statement is offensive to many facebook users imo.

Social media has many faults but it also has some very good aspects to it. Connecting and reuniting friends and family and making the world we live in a smaller place. It can help as a platform to instantly learn of other cultures and countries.
How many missing people or pets have been found through the instantaneous effect of social media? The elderly relative with dementia who has 'gone walkabout' spotted in an area and reunited swiftly and unharmed because the news was circulated on facebook within minutes around the neighbourhood.
Vast sums of money have been raised by people for charity and local issues simply because a person has managed to connect with so many people via facebook who then have a personal choice to give or not to give.
Do I fill out the 'questionnaires' that circulate asking for personal details, or forward the modern day equivalent of a chain letter? Would I announce on social media when I am on holiday so that my house is empty and render my insurance null and void?
No, never! I simply use my integrity and common sense as we all should when faced with anything that could be a scam.
Using gransnet is also a form of social media that is connecting strangers who may inadvertently give away personal details without meaning to....
So in your way of thinking, is that not also an invidious creeping sickness?

Shortlegs Tue 09-Oct-18 11:45:25

A bit of a leap to illegal immigrants I fancy.

Nonnie Tue 09-Oct-18 11:47:36

Its like all the competitions which are simply clickbait.

Not Fb but I signed up for free audio books and started to complete the form until it asked for credit card details "to confirm your identity". Left it straight away.

Jaycee5 Tue 09-Oct-18 11:52:25

Blatant data mining. People can decide to accept it for themselves but they should be much more careful about their children's information. I think there will be a lot of adults asking for photos of them as children to be removed from facebook in the future.

Shortlegs My thought too.

GabriellaG Tue 09-Oct-18 12:16:01

Myym
Let them (fb users) be offended.
I'm not bothered, it's my view.
I note that you haven't put BOTH sides of the picture. The fact that fb creams off your data, the fact that trolling on fb has caused misery to millions and even suicides through keyboard bullying etc...
Relationship break-ups, tittle-tattle et al.
You obviously didn't understand that I was naming FB as the sickness, not the users but then, perhaps you're a user.

PECS Tue 09-Oct-18 12:29:12

I do use FB as I connect with long distance groups of pals that way . I also post nonsense! I regularly change passwords, prune 'friends' and block sites/posts that come via friends of friends etc. But I agree there are downsides and upsides to all social media...and life in general.

Lupatria Tue 09-Oct-18 12:30:49

i use facebook. i keep in touch with people in a group i belong to whose members are scattered throughout the country.
and i use it to keep in touch with friends living locally too.
i make sure my security is as tight as it can be so my page isn't accessed by those i don't know.
while i've put in my birthday day and month i haven't included the year i was born. and i only put in the town where i live [and the one i came from].
i'm also part of a couple of groups which were set up when our favourite author died. one of these groups bans all politics and other contraversial posts. the other one very often is used as an "agony aunt" and we've had heart-rending posts from people who have nobody to share their problems with. fortunately most of these "posters" have found advice very useful and have come back to report that they've followed advice/found out information and things are ok again. this group is one of the best on facebook by far.
i rarely look at videos posted by my friends although sometimes i do do the quizzes just for personal satisfaction.
facebook isn't always bad - it can be a source of comfort to some and helps with others' lonliness.

grumppa Tue 09-Oct-18 12:35:04

What I object to as well about Facebook is the incompetence of its algorithms. I have recently been invited to join various vegan groups (me! Vegan???), which I have rejected on the grounds that they are spam. I don't think the algorithm got the joke.
