No more Sleeping Beauty ??

Ok I am sure I will be pillaried for this post. As I was with my last post, but here goes.
I was listening to Keira Knightly and others on the radio this morning saying they had banned their young children from watching the old classic Disney movies.
The Prince in Sleeping beauty did not ask the sleeping Princess permission to kiss her.
Any child I have ever known has been able to tell the difference between a cartoon and real life. Of course Tom and Jerry is now an anathema in some circles, but is this not a step too far.
The original Disneys have always been good versus evil, with good winning. Perhaps the complainers should read the original Fairy tales including Hans Christian Andersen, they were dark and held real messages.
Is this a step too far ?????

Yes load of old cods wallop I ve kissed a lot of men (and frogs) and never been asked permission maybe I should have signed a declaration at the begining of the date ... in triplicate of course
Kissing is an impulse it just happens like holding someone’s hand you don’t ask, well I wouldn’t expect to be asked, If you re not open to a kiss they would soon know,
My friend was kissed unwelcomly by an elderly man at a party so she bit his tongue, he didn’t try again ?

felice it is political correctness gone flipping mad!!!!

I am really beginning to fear for our society. Wish these people would worry about the real 21st century problems rather than inventing these ridiculous ones.

Grandma70s Thu 18-Oct-18 16:20:47

I think the Disney versions of these wonderful old tales are terrible, bad taste in the extreme, but I wouldn’t ban them. I and my children read the stories and used our imaginations. I knew the ballet, too. Definitely no permission in the ballet! What nonsense.

I am with you Felice and other like minded Grans. KK is talking a load of boll***s. I will say the same on the other thread so there.

Ridiculous & sad, seems we are verging on the ‘thought police’ era.

merlotgran Thu 18-Oct-18 17:53:46

Maybe they could just flash up a disclaimer like they do with, 'Always ask the billpayer's permission.' grin

Maybe 'flash' isn't the right word though. hmm

As the princess in the story is sleeping, she is in no position to give permission for the kiss. If the prince waits for permission, she won't wake up. What a dilemma!

mcem Thu 18-Oct-18 18:34:23

My 3 DGD's watched the disney versions but found Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes more entertaining - no downtrodden princesses there! We recommend them.
After seeing the latest version of Jungle Book, DG3 declared it was much better because she preferred the beautiful elephants to the 'silly ones in the old film'.
I agreed with her!

NfkDumpling Thu 18-Oct-18 20:33:14

I was thinking that Anno!

I agree she’s being silly. If the handsome prince can’t give the sleeping princess a peck of a kiss what’s the world coming to and where’s the romance.

We're all doomed

Snow White - H&S with apples
Hansel & Gretel - Child cruelty
The Three Bears - breaking & entering follows by greed
The Princess & the Pea - cruelty to vegetables

I could go on grin

Beau Thu 18-Oct-18 20:50:39

What nonsense - I'm not a Disney fan at all but I'd rather the 'Disney classics' any day than the doe eyed contorted female bodies in the tiny segment of Frozen I saw in the hospital waiting room recently. I recently bought the original Jungle Book for DGS on DVD - he loves it so much (he's never seen television though as SIL doesn't approve ?

Anniebach Thu 18-Oct-18 21:11:21

Similar was said years ago

Snowwhite. - a nymphomaniac living with 7 men

Sleeping Beauty. - a drug addict

Hansel & Gretal. - victims of pedophiles

Grandma70s Thu 18-Oct-18 21:17:21

Beau, I agree about Frozen, but when you said you had bought the original Jungle Book I thought you meant the Rudyard Kipling book. It terrified my brother when he was a child. It was a book first!

tidyskatemum Thu 18-Oct-18 21:36:05

Beau - completely agree with your comment about Disney female figures. Barbie in a slightly different format. Having said that the whole issue just makes me feel very tired. My DD had a train set and a pretend kitchen and a tool kit and a Barie (though all she did with it was cut its hair) but in the end was a lot more fond of her collection of My Little Ponies. And no-one has ever suggested that might lead to an unhealthy obsession with horses...….

Chewbacca Thu 18-Oct-18 22:48:28

Like Beau,I too recently bought my GC the original Jungle Book dvd and they just love it. The old, original Disney films were, imo, much better than the modern ones. Films the whole family can enjoy together.

MissAdventure Thu 18-Oct-18 22:51:08

I prefer the old ones too.
Bookwise, I bought my daughter traditional stories, and ones like 'the wrestling princess' who was nothing like the traditional female character.

Jalima1108 Thu 18-Oct-18 23:08:06

I like the old versions too - but I must say that I quite like Ana, stoically stomping through the frozen wastes to save her sister and their country.
And Merida in Brave.

I think they are quite 'spunky' role models for little girls.

Beau I would have agreed with you about 'Frozen' when I saw fragments of my DGD's repeated watchings of the film. However having watched it all one afternoon when I had a very poorly little girl to look after I changed my opinion.

The film portrays two sisters who love each other. Elsa shuts herself away to avoid hurting her sister and then goes into self imposed exile to avoid the same for her kingdom. Anna never gives up on her sister and finally it is her love that releases Elsa and allows her to accept herself for what she is. Replace Elsa's magic powers with autism or a physical disability and think about how Anna has 'saved' her and allowed her to be her true self.

The men in this film are definitely no heroes! This has to be 'girl power'!! On the whole the most recent films I have seen represent their princesses as strong, independent women (Rapunzel, Moana, Pocahontas maybe)

Yes I think most children accept Disney films as stories, somewhat separate from real life. I certainly did, though I do have to repeat to DGC 'NEVER' go off with a stranger' like Jasmine (on a magic carpet with Aladdin) or in Snow White's case with 7 strange men!

Oh yes... Belle fell in love with the Beast while he was still a Beast so there is also a message there methinks. The Frog Prince however maybe a different kettle of fish (or

Grandma2213 Fri 19-Oct-18 00:29:15

frogs)! to complete the post.

muffinthemoo Fri 19-Oct-18 08:51:06

The Princess and the Frog is by far the least trashy of the Disney princess films. Sadly it was also the last hand drawn one.

Tiana has a job and works hard!

Foxyloxy Fri 19-Oct-18 17:49:51

I have never heard such tosh! Not you worried about being harangued, but what you were listening to. My daughter who is now a mother of three girls, saw every Disney film that was about when she was young. Now her daughters watch and enjoy them. Are these interviews done to stir up, exactly the sort of discussion now happening? Ban a child from something, it will make it more interesting.

Jalima1108 Fri 19-Oct-18 19:47:10

Ban a child from something, it will make it more interesting.
Of course it will - it makes it into something forbidden but exciting that other children are allowed to do.
So when they ask if they can go for a 'sleepover' what's the first thing they will ask for - to watch a Disney movie!!

DD1 loved them all, now she is 'growing out of them' (her words). She's 10.
