Would someone please put up a list of all the initials used on here for me to copy?
I spend ages trying to work out what they all mean and it's driving me mad!
Obviously some I get but others well.................
In the thread about an ex wife the reply from Newnanny used dh (dear husband?) but talked about ex dh (would he still be dear?) and dc (dear children?). Then went on to say dd (thought it meant dear departed until it said he got married!!)
Any help much appreciated!
Thanks a lot

They're all listed here www.gransnet.com/info/acronyms

jusnoneed Mon 31-Dec-18 13:01:54

Scroll up and look at the sections listed under Gransnet Forums at top of this post - Active/I'm on/ etc etc and the last one is Acronyms. This is the list you ask for.

mcem Mon 31-Dec-18 13:03:07

Aaaaaaaaaaargh!

mcem Mon 31-Dec-18 13:04:52

Exactly the same old question posted earlier today and for the umpteenth time!

Farmor15 Mon 31-Dec-18 23:03:50

Perhaps if the term “acronyms” wasn’t in the heading, it would make it easier for new users. Not everyone understands the word, which is not used in everyday conversation. “Abbreviations” would be a better heading.

If so many users are asking, there must be a reason.

Chewbacca Mon 31-Dec-18 23:08:04

I spent ages typing out examples of some of the abbreviations on the other thread earlier today. They're still available.

Emmaline Mon 31-Dec-18 23:49:52

Sometimes I put IYKWIM instead of IYCWIM which means - if you know what I mean

M0nica Tue 01-Jan-19 02:57:40

I agree, not everyone recognises the term 'acronyms'. Nowadays it is far more to use the word 'Abbreviation'.

I also think the abreviation list is getting far to long. The relationship ones are fine, they are very straightforward and quickly worked out. I would even except AIBU

To go beyond that, I consider nerdish. We can manage without BTW, DBH, surely DH is sufficient and when it gets to IYCWIM, FWIW and OG!

I am almost a foundation member of GN and I agree the abbreviation business is getting out of hand.

lemongrove Tue 01-Jan-19 09:03:49

I agree mcem and ‘aaaaaaaaaaargh’ is the right response.

Riverwalk Tue 01-Jan-19 09:13:47

Aaaaaaargh indeed!

I've just for the first time had a look at what GNHQ describe as the 'most commonly used' abbreviations and acronyms and it includes OG (old git) and GSH(good sense of humour). I have never seen such abbreviations used, ever!

Perhaps if the term “acronyms” wasn’t in the heading, it would make it easier for new users. Not everyone understands the word, That about sums it up Farmor with these incessant complaints! grin

mcem Tue 01-Jan-19 09:15:32

And this same topic is being discussed on a 3rd thread!
I really do think it would be easier if GN renamed the list. They are abbreviations NOT acronyms in most cases.

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 01-Jan-19 09:30:22

It's New Year so best time for a clear out of useless info. Thanks for pointing out this out. We'll take a look first thing tomorrow and see what we can change to make it more useful.

yggdrasil Tue 01-Jan-19 11:36:16

I know about the acronym list. I know most of those text type ones like IYKWIM, FWIW, BTW that are common to most forums. I don't have any problem with those.
It is the 'relationship' ones, all beginning with an unnecessary D, and with possibly several interpretations, that annoy me.
I see postings from long-time GNers who say I should get used to it, but I don't see why, except maybe it makes them feel superior .hmm

Beckykess Tue 01-Jan-19 12:25:15

Thank you FlexibleFriend for your straight forward and useful answer.

Much appreciated instead of all the replies that didn't answer but just showed exasperation for the fact that this question is asked so many times and is, unthinkably, on another thread.

When new to a site one doesn't always take in all the different headings - so my profound apologies for not noticing Acronyms or, indeed, scouring all the Topics on the off chance the question might already be there.

From a Newcomer not a Mind Reader!

Chewbacca Tue 01-Jan-19 12:49:58

confused

Blinko Tue 01-Jan-19 12:52:48

Must admit my first reaction was the same as mcem. Beckykess I thought that was a very dignified response. Good for you! Stick with us... we do improve.

mumofmadboys Tue 01-Jan-19 12:54:25

Older GNetters have no wish to feel superior. We have just got used to using the abbreviations and it is quicker to write. Of course there is no malintent.

MissAdventure Tue 01-Jan-19 12:56:25

Not everyone uses the abbreviations, Becky, so don't worry if some threads get too complex.
I just ignore them. tchsmile

Farmor15 Tue 01-Jan-19 13:23:05

I think people who use forums a lot are used to all these abbreviations and take it for granted that others do too. However, Gransnet is a bit different as it’s intended for older people, some of whom may not have used forums previously.
Glad to see that Gransnet staff are going to have a look.

M0nica Tue 01-Jan-19 13:38:36

The only abbreviations I have ever used are the family ones. I think the 'D' makes the abbreviation more obvious. Just putting in 'H', 'S' 'D' seems a bit insubstantial, putting the 'D' in makes it heavier. The 'D' doesn't necessarily mean 'Dear', I t could stand for 'dumb', 'daft', 'desirable' or 'desperate' . That can be left to the readers imagination.

mcem Tue 01-Jan-19 21:28:24

Please bear in mind that many of us came to GN with no previous experience of site etiquette and conventions. We learned and adapted which is why I don't see that it's any different for newcomers joining now.
It's just a bit frustrating when this same old topic appears on 3 threads in one day!
I do think that GNHQ's plan to cull the unnecessary ones and (possibly) ditch 'acronyms' in favour of 'abbreviations ' might help!

FlexibleFriend Tue 01-Jan-19 22:29:41

I use abbreviations in common use across forums such as Btw and Fwiw but all the darling this that and the others drive me to distraction and are completely unnecessary. I found the acronyms for myself when I joined and can't see why others have such an issue with new people asking for an explanation but hey that's life innit whatever floats ya boat.
