My partner is a driving examiner and you are correct, the other driver is at fault for emerging without effective observations , irrespective of any signals from other road users . Hope that helps .

Don't worry Pamiel. If a driver hits you for assuming you are going to turn either direction then they are deemed at fault for insurance reasons!

I know this for a fact as I pulled out in front of a car that had his indicator on to turn left - all the way from a roundabout I would add so not just two blinks.... He even seemed to me to slow down as he reached my road but nope ..he hit me. Fully convinced it was I that was in the right, we called the police who were, I have to say lovely but they took me to the Panda and explained that no matter what the other driver is indicating IF they are have right of way then you have to ensure they are turning before proceeding!

Don't worry, you should never assume anything. People put their indicators on and forget them. Happens all the time. The police have better things to worry about.

Tedber my experience almost exactly last week at a busy roundabout in Bedford. Fortunately the only difference was that I held back so no collision.
However I had assumed (wrongly);that I was in the right .

You must legally wait until the driver makes the manoeuvre. Don't worry.

He probably just wanted to give you a fright by taking your number, so don’t worry about it.

I never take it for granted that anyone is actually going to turn the way their indicators suggest. I've met far too many cars turning left while indicating right and vice versa!

At least you do use your indicators. As a pedestrian I'm amazed at the number of drivers who don't bother. You think it's safe to cross the road and nearly get mowed down by a lazy driver.

RosieLeah, I find that very annoying too - I think that some drivers just don't consider that pedestrians are also road users and so don't think that they deserve to have indications given to them. I usually point at the indicator and call "Your indicator isn't working!" and sometimes they look a bit confused, but it only really helps if they have a window open. Makes me feel better anyway.
