I am a disabled driver and use hand controls on an automatic car - I have been driving for over 40 years. First, a bit of tech info relevant to the post. As standard equipment a small flick switch is on the top of the push pull controls next to the steering wheel, which operates the indicators - I rarely use it as I can comfortably use the normal ones.

Yesterday I was coming off a roundabout turning left, and as I turned the wheel and the indicator clicked off I accidentally caught the switch and the left indicator blinked on. It only blinked twice before I switched it off. In the meantime a driver waiting to turn right out of the side street on my left, pulled out in front of me and very nearly sideswiped my car. It gave me a fright and I pulled over to collect myself before continuing.

The driver of the other car had also pulled over, got out of his car, came over to me and proceeded to rant at me for indicating and not turning. I tried to explain what had happened but he wasn’t having any of it and said he was taking my number to report me for driving without due care and attention. He stormed off before I could say any
more and I fumed all the way home - the indicator blinked twice at the most and he just pulled out. I’m not sure of the law on this but I seem to remember back in the dim distant past of my driving lessons, my instructor telling me that you should always wait to make sure drivers follow through after signalling intent to turn, just because they have signalled doesn’t mean they will actually turn. Thoughts anyone ?

Firstly don't take any notice of him reporting you, he probably just said it and the police would want evidence.

It is a long time since I learned to drive but I was told exactly the same as you. Maybe the Highway Code is online?

Sorry you had an inbreed road raging at you.

The Highway code regarding signalling is here - www.highwaycodeuk.co.uk/signals.html

Mention is made of ensuring the driver indicating will follow through - after two flashes, he was definitely in the wrong, so there!

My partner is a driving examiner and you are correct, the other driver is at fault for emerging without effective observations , irrespective of any signals from other road users . Hope that helps .

Don't worry Pamiel. If a driver hits you for assuming you are going to turn either direction then they are deemed at fault for insurance reasons!

I know this for a fact as I pulled out in front of a car that had his indicator on to turn left - all the way from a roundabout I would add so not just two blinks.... He even seemed to me to slow down as he reached my road but nope ..he hit me. Fully convinced it was I that was in the right, we called the police who were, I have to say lovely but they took me to the Panda and explained that no matter what the other driver is indicating IF they are have right of way then you have to ensure they are turning before proceeding!

Harsh lesson but no need for you to worry at all.

Please don't worry about this bully Pammiel he is sounding off because he knows he is in the wrong, you should never presume any manuvere another driver is going to do.

Don't worry, you should never assume anything. People put their indicators on and forget them. Happens all the time. The police have better things to worry about.

Tedber my experience almost exactly last week at a busy roundabout in Bedford. Fortunately the only difference was that I held back so no collision.
However I had assumed (wrongly);that I was in the right .

You must legally wait until the driver makes the manoeuvre. Don't worry.

He probably just wanted to give you a fright by taking your number, so don’t worry about it.
Mistakes like that happen ( the indicator.)

I never take it for granted that anyone is actually going to turn the way their indicators suggest. I've met far too many cars turning left while indicating right and vice versa!

At least you do use your indicators. As a pedestrian I'm amazed at the number of drivers who don't bother. You think it's safe to cross the road and nearly get mowed down by a lazy driver.

RosieLeah, I find that very annoying too - I think that some drivers just don't consider that pedestrians are also road users and so don't think that they deserve to have indications given to them. I usually point at the indicator and call "Your indicator isn't working!" and sometimes they look a bit confused, but it only really helps if they have a window open. Makes me feel better anyway.
