Just a matter of personal taste

Have just read so many moans on here about textured wallpaper and have recently had my daughter quoting her ‘expert’ friend who claims I should totally redecorate my house (she hasn’t seen it) even though I’ve only recently spent money on it. In fact, before said unexpected advice, I was just starting to like the small, 50s house I bought following my divorce and had started to feel proud to show it to guests. . I’m crap at DIY and so have paid a couple of different professionals to decorate - generally one room each year. The decorators stripped the old patterned wallpaper but replaced it with textured wallpaper they could paint over. You can tell it was a professional job, especially in the living-room which (I think) looks really elegant.. In two of the rooms, I’m also really glad I’ve slightly rebelled against the complete ‘neutral’ (= beige) fashion by insisting that some part of the room, even if it’s the carpet, has to be a different colour (beige carpets are a nightmare with a dog, in any case). To my mind, it’s all about the end result so I don’t intend to be a slave to interior design fashions any more than I am to clothes. Neither am I narcissistic enough to imply that my taste is the only ‘good’ taste - only that it’s right for me. So anyone who disagrees or who feels like bitching about my house when they visit knows what they can do.

You have to live in it, do exactly as you please!

I always do, I like really strong colours, couldn’t care less what anyone else thinks

I’m not at all keen on beige tbh. I think it denotes a lack of imagination or a slave to the Hoppenheim woman (is that how you spell her name?)

We have recently decorated our hall, landing and stairs and have used a William Morris wallpaper below the rail and a cream that picks up a colour in the hall runner above. The stair and landing Brinton carpet is sea green/blue and exactly matches the paper. Our hall has parquet flooring but I have bought a wool runner with the colours in the pattern. I love it. Couldn’t care less what anybody thinks. It isn’t tbh like other people’s houses but I don’t live there?

We all have different taste when it comes to our homes and I’m sure any friends that come to visit will be pleased you are settled after your divorce and are happy. How you decorate your house is nobody’s business but your own.

As a fellow divorcee I remember how thrilled I was to be on my own in my own place and know I could choose anything I liked, I was paying for it!!

I hope you’ll be very happy and enjoy your new life

I'm not sure what it's got to do with anyone else.confused

That sounds lovely Whitewavemark2 Just my type of thing.
Everyone should decorate their home as they like. It's a home not a showhouse!

Silverg I am also a lover of textured wallpaper it looks classy imo so dismiss what anyone thinks its your choice, how can your DDs friend comment when she hasn't been to your home.
The only thing I make sure I don't do is have all over patterned floors and walls it makes a room look too small but that is my opinion and may not suit everyone.
Your home sounds delightful so glad you have got it to your liking.

Beige is boring.
Your DDs friend knows nothing about you or your house - ignore.
Enjoy your lovely home!

There's textured wallpaper - anaglypta - and then there's woodchip. I have no objection to the former, in fact I've had it in previous houses but the latter is a pain in the a* to remove and I'd avoid it at all costs.

paddyann Mon 01-Jul-19 10:37:44

Tell her its your house and isn't she lucky she doesn't have to live in it if its not to her taste .I have a friend who says things like "I wouldn't have THOSE cushions" or "not keen on that colour" and thats what I tell her .Enjoy your lovely new home .

I’m a great believer in making your home right for you, I never follow fads or trends, I don’t care why other people think, but it’s important to me that I walk in, and love it

Yes, your home, your taste.
We've had bright colours and muted ones over the years as the fancy has taken us.
Relatively recently we completely re-did the bedroom that had been my mum's. I wanted a total change in there, although some of her furniture remains. It's a warm room as the outside wall is covered by the conservatory. So we painted it blue, had a new grey carpet, all white furniture and some toning photos (on canvas) on the walls to add a bit of colour. It's been admired.... but the important thing is that we like it.

So glad you are enjoying your new house, it’s so exciting to decorate and furnish to your own taste and needs. I felt like a teenager when I divorced and got my own place a long time ago. The only thing that’s important is making you happy when you close the door.

What is it about this “Grey” colour everywhere? Can’t stand it, we live in a mostly grey country. Blooming depressing.

Auntieflo Mon 01-Jul-19 11:58:45

Silverg. as others have said, just enjoy what you have chosen. If you like it, that’s fine.
I do love the programmes on TV, and magazines that show peoples homes and trends, but, often find something that I have already done! (Who would have known I was a trendsetter). If only. So it’s not all new.

Sara65 Mon 01-Jul-19 11:59:17

Macavity

I can’t stand grey either, how on earth did that become so popular?

sodapop Mon 01-Jul-19 12:17:51

Well done on getting yourself so together after your divorce silverg It's great to have your own place to have exactly what you want. I remember well that feeling of freedom and pride in my own little terrace house. Nobody else's business how you decorate and it would be ill mannered of them to comment.
Enjoy the peace and your freedom of choice.

Jane10 Mon 01-Jul-19 12:49:30

I do agree about grey! So chilly and a bit depressing in my opinion but that's just me.
We wanted our place to be cosy and welcoming. All the walls of every room are a primrose yellow and all the carpets are pale green. However, we went to town on fabrics and have lovely curtains in striking designs and lots of my favourite Persian rugs. No other patterns. We like it! Suspect the younger family members find it old fashioned but we find their places cold and hard. You pays your money you takes your choice!

Hi Silverg,
You have with help of professional decorators made a house into a home that will hopefully bring you joy and comfort for many years to come.

The best bit is having your own front door.smile

GoodMama Mon 01-Jul-19 14:36:34

Congrats on your new home and life post divorce!

Your home should be your sanctuary, your safe and most comfortable place.

Don’t listen to any “designer” who tells you different smile All tastes are different. No one designer knows best, you hires designers with a vision like yours- as you should!

Now kick up your feet and enjoy your home!

dragonfly46 Mon 01-Jul-19 14:41:56

Each to their own - after all you have to live with it.

Sara65 Mon 01-Jul-19 14:43:10

It’s so personal, I could walk into a room and think, yes that’s nice, but I wouldn’t be able to live in it, I like colours, textures, roaring fires, not everyone’s taste I’m sure

Jane10 Mon 01-Jul-19 17:19:31

That Scandinavian concept of 'hygge' strikes me as the way to live.

mcem Mon 01-Jul-19 17:44:25

I like my home as it is. However it's such a long time since it was decorated that I feel it needs freshening up. I have seen nothing at all recently that I like so it stays as it is meantime!
I'm another who, many years divorced, likes to take only my own opinions into account!

M0nica Mon 01-Jul-19 20:00:57

You are the one living in the house. You decorate it to your taste. If you are happy with it then it is nobody else's business but yours.

Silverg Sun 07-Jul-19 12:39:51

Have been much cheered up by this Mitchell & Webb sketch. They should now do one for the completely beige (sorry, ‘neutral’) room. youtu.be/nWoWHzq21tA
