What irks you

Coming up to our golden wedding and trying to find a nice break away for a few days. Looking on AirBnB and I can’t stand it when looking through a possible booking you come across a picture of the bathroom with the toilet seat up. The other thing that irks me is sloppy bed making and coloured sheets! White white white sheets are the only acceptable colour when I am looking for BnB or Hotel etc.

Found a lovely little place and it was spoilt by messy bed and toilet seat left up for the pictures!

Perhaps I am too fussy!

What are things you look for in a special break away be it Hotel or BnB or self catering? What irks you?

Chance would be a fine thing! If I could afford a break away, nothing would irk me.

Well maybe having to share a bed with an old man grin

We've recently stayed in a beautiful house in Devon overlooking the sea. It was wonderful so I can't complain. It was a three storey property and lovely. However, the bedrooms were on the bottom floor but the bathroom was on the floor above via a rickety staircase. Slightly difficult if you needed the loo in the night, which I we usually do.

That's hilarious BradfordLass, hahahaha.

For a Golden Wedding I'd have to have something special for a weekend----like the Savoy, Ritz or the Dorchester.

I wouldn`t care about the sheets or the toilet seat as long as it was clean.

Urmstongran Mon 02-Sep-19 17:58:43

You hit the nail on the head OP. You are too fussy (about a couple of photographs).

Luckygirl Mon 02-Sep-19 18:00:48

Definitely too fussy - just cool it!! smile

Greenfinch Mon 02-Sep-19 18:09:03

What does the colour of the sheets matter.

Charleygirl5 Mon 02-Sep-19 18:26:26

I am with callgirlI would not care if the sheets were tartan provided they and the rest of the bedding was clean.

You are over-fussy. You would not like my house where the toilet seat is permanently up. What does it matter?

At this rate you will never leave home for a break.

I like white good quality bedlinen too.So I understand that but if I got irritated every time a toilet seat was left up here I'd be in apermanent bad mood.My OH hasn't yet discovered that toilet seats can be lowered !

I’m with EllanVannin!

People playing music or anything outdoors when they could easily use headphones. That really irritates me.

A 'nice break' and AirBnb are incompatible in my view. If you want hotel standards then a good hotel will provide them, whereas AirBnb is a gamble.

Gosh, none of the suggested would even occur to me.

Providing the room is warm, the beds are comfortable, there is plentiful hot water and there is a decent sized bath. I am happy with almost anything.

Our Golden Wedding anniversary stay away from home could have been a disaster. We stayed in a big hotel which advertised itself as being 4 star, in fact it was unrated and was actually average 3 star at best. Because both of us had been ill. I had a minor op 2 days before we went, it was a last minute booking and we did not check Trip Advisor.

It wasn't a total disaster because although the room was shabby. it was at least warm, (in a cold February). The beds were comfortable and there was always plenty of hot water to fill the huge old bath.

Bradfordlass that was ?????

SalsaQueen Mon 02-Sep-19 20:02:16

Fairiesfolly I'd be pleased if the place was clean, comfortable and decent. You're far too fussy. I couldn't give a monkey's about the colour of the sheets. The toilet seat being up wouldn't worry me, so long as the toilet was clean.

Alima Mon 02-Sep-19 20:46:08

Probably that word “irks”. I think you need to chill Fariesfolly.

DanniRae Mon 02-Sep-19 20:46:12

Yes I agree with SalsaQueen - "Clean, comfortable and decent" and you are too fussy!
You can't have been on Gransnet long if you thought you would get away with a post like that!

When my sons were growing up and could use the main toilet not the potty, I stuck a cork to the cistern so that the toilet seat could not stand upright permanently.

It was a small inconvenience to hold it whilst they widdled and also meant they never spilled over onto the floor as they were leaning ever-so-slightly forward.

I didn't see the value in constantly hassling them about seats being upright when there was a painless alternative which would teach them a respectful lifetime habit.

I don’t like: rooms that aren’t lit properly; carpets that don’t match; very limited amounts of tea and coffee in the room; too much noise from other guests; poor quality freebie shower gel and soap in case I want to take them home; heating/air con that’s tricky to work.

So many things and I can probably think of lots more - after a very unsuccessful session at the gym and then listening to the news on the way home I’m in a thoroughly bad mood and I’m having a good moan.

Fairiesfolly Mon 02-Sep-19 21:59:52

SirChenjin. Feel free to have a good moan and get it off your chest lol. ? yes those things I can’t stand either.

Have had some fantastic hotels over the years, some grotty ones that I have refused to stay in and some great ones as well as great Air bnb’s. Not ever had a bad air bnb from memory only hotels! I think I have found a good one now though far far away down in the depths of Cornwall!

Yes I admit to being fussy, we can’t all have the same requirements as it would be a boring old world with nothing to moan about would it. We shall have a thoroughly good time exploring the far west of Cornwall returning each night to a lovely cosy apartment. Looking forward to it.

Thanks Fairies grin

I hate properties which have no outside space as I like to go into the garden with a cup of tea. It's one of my simple pleasures.

henetha Tue 03-Sep-19 09:31:51

Nothing like that irks me. Life's too short.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 03-Sep-19 10:12:59

These are my “must haves”

White bedding
Closed Toilet
Separate shower (detest over bath showers)
Windows that open properly
Prefer balcony/terrace
Tea/coffee making facilities
An Abundance if white fluffy towels
White Fluffy bathrobes (travel carry on luggage only frequently, hence no room for bathrobe)
Cannot see the point of going anywhere to get less/lower standards than at home.
