Am I being unreasonable to think that a Job Centre should help someone looking for a job? Apparently not at our local centre. My DGD is starting at the local university and she and her boyfriend are to live with us. He went to the job centre today to find a local job but apparently they cannot help him do this unless he is on benefits. The website clearly states you don’t have to be on benefits to be able to access their employment help services,
He is Spanish. Is that the problem or is this the practice at all job centres?

I think you have to apply online for JSA (if it still exists) and you THEN get an appointment at the Job Centre.

You can search the website for local jobs with no input from the job centre by the look of the website. I suggest he goes round the local agencies and registers with them. It shouldn’t cost anything. Depending on the type of work he is looking for, it may be worthwhile to ask around eg. Bars, restaurants etc.

Thank you, he is going to do that but thought he’d start with the job centre.
I was just surprised that they dismissed him out of hand as the website states “However, you do not need to be claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance to visit Jobcentre Plus, and anyone looking for new opportunities in their area is welcome.”

I think in my one people have to search for the jobs themselves on those large computer type things.

As a former member of staff in a JC, in my opinion they stopped helping people years ago.

you do not need to be claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance to visit Jobcentre Plus, and anyone looking for new opportunities in their area is welcome.

He should print that on a piece of paper and go back to the lazy beggars at the Job Centre! Make 'em do what they're paid for grin

As long as he has permission to work in the UK it's their duty to help but frankly, I think he'd be better off using his own initiative.
It seems Job Centres haven't changed since I was last in UK.
