To think the real crime was creating a £1m gold toilet?

I hope it’s already been melted down?

It was just part of a temporary art installation at Blenheim, wasn't it? I'd read that it had been taken to museums around the world, as some sort of satire against the excesses of wealth. I've no idea how it was financed, but I guess it would have been melted down eventually anyway?

Even as a work of art, surely it should have been merely gold plated? My first reaction was “How on earth could have Cattelan have afforded to build it?”

Shit happens

Cattelan was sponsored by the Guggenheim Foundation and a Parisian arts trust, amongst others (according to google). There's a lot of money sloshing round the art world. The toilet is apparently worth over £1 million, Leonardo's Salvator Mundi was sold at auction a couple of years ago for over 450 times that.

If the robbers have melted it down and given the money to good causes, I'd probably applaud them. I doubt this has happened though.

EllanVannin Sat 14-Sep-19 22:21:34

I bet that wasn't one of Mr Crappers little jobs.

EllanVannin Sat 14-Sep-19 22:36:57

Police have nothing to go on !

Maggiemaybe Sat 14-Sep-19 22:38:20

Oh, I'm sure they'll get to the bottom of it.

EllanVannin Sat 14-Sep-19 23:03:17

Tee hee hee hee.

Someone will be flush if it's melted down.

EllanVannin Sat 14-Sep-19 23:04:51

Where there's muck---

Could I just, politely I hope, remind posters that a title and a thread like this needs at least a short description of the issue and preferably a link.

For we who don't live in the UK or access the lastest gossip, it would be helpful.

Nga mihi = thank you.

Bradford wherever anyone lives in the world, googling £1m gold toilet will reveal the murky depths of this story

BradfordLass72 Sat 14-Sep-19 23:37:58

EllanVannin grin grin And Thomas Crapper was a Yorkshire man.

Ironically, the verb 'to crap' has little to do with his name going back to Latin and Medieval English but he certainly went into the right business (so to speak)

Sherry = o.k. (Guess the language?)

They arrested someone. I think. How on earth did they get in? You'd have thought they'd have had better security. Still it's reminded me I've not been for a few years so think another visit is on the agenda. Fabulous place

Alima Sun 15-Sep-19 09:06:20

You’ve not been for a few years Oopsminty? Better get some prunes in! (When you do finally go again you would be better off with a diamond loo. Harder wearing.

lemongrove Sun 15-Sep-19 09:15:55

Alima grin
We have annual passes and go regularly......no prunes needed for us!
Blast it though, we were going to visit in the next week, and I wanted a go ( three mins allowed!) on that loo.
It has to be an inside ‘job’ ( no sniggers please) as the lay out to even get into the main courtyard is secure, never mind getting into the palace itself.

Anja Sun 15-Sep-19 09:36:41

Time to get real....when so many are without clean water and toilets in the third world this is an ABOMINATION ????

Elegran Sun 15-Sep-19 09:59:31

It is apparently being exhibited to draw attention to the ludicrousness of extreme wealth. If that is indicated at the exhibition, it is making a valid point, so it is being useful.

Making something out of gold that has been bought legitimately isn't an abomination. (it probably isn't solid gold anyway - that would be very dificult to manufacture) If it is solid, then as someone else has said, it will probably be melted down eventually and made into hundreds of smaller objects - jewellery perhaps, which would be sold and the profits would go to . . what? Would the money be spent on the poor? I doubt it.

Anja Mon 16-Sep-19 11:27:57

You miss the point Elegran ?
