I’m putting my tin hat on here before I even start but.....
Does anyone else get immediately tense a some styles of laughter?

Tense, irritated, feathers ruffled. You name it giggley repeated bursts of tittering (only way I can describe it) set my teeth on edge and my stomach clenching.
Why????

I dislike loud guffaws especially in restaurants. Absolutely no need for it except to draw attention imo.

I really like the sound of laughter, but I’m a bit with Greenfinch, I’m not too keen on loud guffaws either, but at least they’re happy I suppose.

Isn't laughter such a natural thing that most of us couldn't do it any other way even if we wanted to, and are probably totally unaware of how it sounds to others?

I'm not saying that it can't be irritating in some settings, but I strongly disagree with the comment saying "absolutely no need for it except to draw attention".

Don't like pretend laughter or online/text hee hee.
But rather strangely dont mind ha ha

Personally, I would love to have a proper belly laugh, seem to be in short supply atm.smile

There's a particularly aggravating kind of male laughter, generally heard in social situations and often involving alcohol. I refer to the men who do this as "Arfurs" because it sounds like Arf-arf-arf.

However, I love the sound of someone having a genuine, creased-up, laughing 'til it hurts and tears are streaming kind of a laugh. You know, the sort you end up joining in with because it's infectious even if you've no idea what the original trigger was.?

Yes.
My grandson has a very nice, polite friend who has a horribly smirky, sneaky sounding laugh.

It really irritates me, because he does it the whole time. (And yes, before anyone says it, I know I'm mean)

I don't like Barbara Windsor type of laugh very annoying, although there are undoubtedly annoying male equivalents.

Jimmy Carr has a very strange laugh imo, really odd sounds like a donkey, apologies to donkeys!

Babies laughter is the very best grin

You are right Terribull the laughter of babies and toddlers is so infectious.

Namsnanny Tue 26-Nov-19 16:59:36

scribbles .... totally get the ceased up with laughter comments!
So heartwarming to hear someone genuinely laughing ? and sooooo infectious too!

Namsnanny Tue 26-Nov-19 17:02:37

terribull ... Oooo yes, babies when something new happens to them, no more glorious a sound. I’m laughing now at the thought of a sweet little chubby chops ( one of my daughters was like that!) screeching with glee?

Does anyone else remember the song "The Laughing Policeman"?? I defy anyone to listen to this song the whole way through without joining in with the laughter - also Elvis Presley's hilarious version of "Are you Lonely Tonight" - both make me laugh and in turn cheer me up - laughter being the best medicine as they say. grin

merlotgran Tue 26-Nov-19 17:42:43

When I was about five my father would mime to The Laughing Policeman. He'd be convulsing and I'd be laughing my head off.

I didn't think it was funny. I just didn't want to upset him. grin

Namsnanny Tue 26-Nov-19 18:24:00

The thought of him enjoying making you laugh merlot and you enjoying him thinking he was indeed making you laugh, made me laugh confused if you understand me ?

I love hearing anyone laugh.
Yes Jimmy Carr does sound like a donkey but his laugh still makes me laugh.
I have been told that I and my husband can be heard before seen because we both laugh a little too loud.
Rather that than arguing eh ladies/men.

This reminds me of my late friend and I reading saucy postcards outside a shop in Great Yarmouth years ago. We were hysterical as we read each one, really loud laughter, so much so that the assistant came outside and we thought we were going to get chased. But no, she said she hadn't heard laughter like it in years and was a tonic to her----and good for business as it drew quite a few people.

Needless to say, I went inside and bought a number of the postcards to keep and now and again I look through them and smile, thinking of that day. How anyone would not find them funny would be beyond me.

Thank God for my sense of humour ! Though a lot has gone since my friend died.

Laughter's wonderful, and lovely to hear. And I don't think any of us can help it if we have been blessed with an unusual laugh.

But I have sometimes sat on a train and thanked my lucky stars that I don't have to work with the cheerful woman across the aisle....

henetha Wed 27-Nov-19 10:33:34

I love laughing and there's not enough of it these days.
But it can be irritating... I was talking to a neighbour recently
and he said something funny to which I laughed out loud, - and then suddenly realised that I hate the sound of my own
laugh!...

Scottiebear Wed 27-Nov-19 10:47:28

Never found myself bothered by anyones laughter. However, at a concert last night, we were stuck right in front of someone who found it necessary to make those loud, shrill, ear splitting whistles after every song. Grr.

Newatthis Wed 27-Nov-19 11:04:26

I have a 'silent smile' sort of laugh and I so wish I had a really loud laugh that some people have.
