The Lady Garden

Apparently, The Body Shop are sponsoring a display this year at the Chelsea Flower Show, as a feminist space, with plants and sculptures echoing the 'curves of the female form'.
What they have come up with, is a large sculpture of 'women's bits' with a few plants in front.
Call me old fashioned!
But I think this sort of thing is offensive and pathetic and am surprised that the RHS is 'enthusiastic and supportive' about it.

Celebrating? More like objectifying the female body. Bodyshop owned by Natura. Advertising pure and simple.

blondenana Sat 25-Jan-20 11:39:03

Awful ,

GagaJo Sat 25-Jan-20 11:47:51

The image of what they're planning is not great. SO much more they could do. The female form has inspired artists since the dawn of time. To just produce a floral vag is lazy.

Dreadful

I thought the Body Shop was for Men and Women, my SIL likes one of their shower gels. ??

Kalu Sat 25-Jan-20 12:05:31

I hate the expression ‘lady garden’ and hope they have a good supply of sick bags nearby. ?

suziewoozie Sat 25-Jan-20 12:07:12

There’s nothing politically correct about using twee euphanisms for female grnetslia MO - where did you get that idea from? It’s pathetic not to use proper language

GagaJo Sat 25-Jan-20 12:09:14

Suzie, I almost always agree with you. But on this one, I don't. I think it's funny. Soz luv!

merlotgran Sat 25-Jan-20 13:32:30

I would imagine they'll be a bit gutted now Meghan Markle has given up duchessing and won't be around during the royal visit at the beginning of Chelsea week.

We hope this garden, which celebrates our feminist founding principles, will provide a beautiful and thought-provoking space in which we can further open up the dialogue surrounding female health and empowerment.”

I'm not impressed by the garden. Jennifer Hirsch is a botanist rather than a designer and it shows.

MissAdventure Sat 25-Jan-20 13:34:05

Well, its prettier than the real thing, and probably more fragrant.

grin

Gag you’re forgiven but it makes my toes curl - all genitalia euphemisms do. And here’s a ??for merlot for a winning example of utter obsession.

GagaJo Sat 25-Jan-20 13:53:09

LOL . Dunno about you, girls, but I'm as fresh as a daisy.

BlueBelle Sat 25-Jan-20 13:53:13

You speak for yourself Missadventure must get the mirror out ???

lucywinter Sat 25-Jan-20 13:54:57

They must be Mumsnetters. Sure that is where the phrase "lady garden" originated.

MissAdventure Sat 25-Jan-20 13:58:50

I quite like the statement about the lady garden, the part about opening up dialogue.
It has too! Look at all of us discussing, in an adult way, female health and empowerment. grin

merlotgran Sat 25-Jan-20 14:01:47

for merlot for a winning example of utter obsession.

Eh?

My comment is valid. The design stage of a garden is often over a year in the planning and sponsorship/advertising crucial to their success.

Last year's Back to Nature garden which the Duchess of Cambridge was involved in would not have been anything like the success it was if she hadn't visited it.

Female empowerment is right up Meghan's street and whatever you think of my so called 'obsession' (wrong BTW) they would more than likely have had the D of S in mind as it is a conceptual garden.

suziewoozie Sat 25-Jan-20 14:05:26

Nope - obsession will do nicely.

timetogo2016 Sat 25-Jan-20 14:07:16

No Brazilian plants then well not until next year maybe.
Loved your input BlueSky hahahaha.
And yours NanKate.
I think I may watch it for the first time and soooo look forward to seeing the Queens face.
I hope Prince Andrew keeps away or do I ? haha

GagaJo Sat 25-Jan-20 14:10:11

Lady Garden is a very old phrase. I've been using it for years (sorry Suzie). I think it's hilarious.

MissAdventure Sat 25-Jan-20 14:11:47

I wonder if people will feel a bit uncomfortable about having a really good look at it?

lucywinter Sat 25-Jan-20 14:15:34

Wonder what the queen will think of it. Suppose they might put a cover over parts of it.

Beswitched Sat 25-Jan-20 14:17:22

Very silly. Like something a group of teenage boys would think of.

GagaJo Sat 25-Jan-20 14:18:56

Really Beswitched? People have been using the female form for art for millenia. It's hardly new.

lucywinter Sat 25-Jan-20 14:22:09

Sorry - timetogo already mentioned the queen. (Great minds)
