Panic buying of loo roll

I don’t understand this; Coronavirus is ultimately a respiratory /lung disease, so why the bulk buying of loo roll? There is no associated bowel dysfunction. And in any case, fighting over the rolls is ridiculous. When I was growing up in the 60s we always used cloth hankies which my mum then washed and ironed. (The warm hanky felt lovely when one had a cold). So if there is a shortage why not just cut up an old sheet and use that? Am I missing something?

I agree calendargirl The super markets should regulate buying for a while.

The supermarkets here in sw are well stocked, there was no sign of panic buying yesterday. It is wise to be stocked up enough for a couple of weeks but any good housekeeper has always done that

LullyDully Thu 12-Mar-20 08:06:43

On the news they showed one factory turning out millions of rolls a day. No shortage. The only shortage will be storage in people's houses maybe.

So, anyone on here, or who knows someone who seccumbed to panic buying of anything -and has storage problems, please do pass things on to Food Banks who are having even more than usual problems at present.

Haha Cunco I had forgotten the horror of Izal ?
Even squares of cut up newspaper on a string were better than that.
SueDonim yes, the psychology behind the loo roll panic buying is an interesting one.
The makers and suppliers will now be working flat out to provide more to fill the need.....it’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good.

”It is wise to be stocked up enough for a couple of weeks but any good housekeeper has always done that”

Oh dear. That’s not me then. Nobody could accuse me of being a good housekeeper.
I’ve got loo roll and a few tins, soap, washing powder aNd some pasta but what else should I think about buying?

Callistemon Thu 12-Mar-20 10:00:16

Bronco - does anyone remember that?

Callistemon Thu 12-Mar-20 10:00:53

I'm not recommending that you buy it, Lucca!

Lucca Thu 12-Mar-20 11:19:09

Certainly won’t - it was hideous stuff

Gransooz Thu 12-Mar-20 11:26:35

Callistemon, that really made me laugh out loud! DH too when he asked what was so funny ??

The mechanics of supermarket stock holding means that they carry very little stock of any product, preferring to rely on frequent deliveries. The problem with toilet rolls is that more than 50% of the UK’s supply comes from China, and a minor blip in those supplies coming into the country soon results in shortages at the wholesalers, which in turn causes shortages in the retailers. Once the shelves begin to look like they are low in stock, people get worried and they buy more. Pretty soon it becomes a “national shortage”. Don’t worry. Things will soon recover.

Gransooz smile
I was wondering if it was too rude to post

Callistemon Thu 12-Mar-20 12:35:48

There are plenty of loo rolls stored in warehouses as firms got in extra stocks in case Brexit caused a supply problem.

Forget the loo roll, my personal grump is the diappearance of UHT milk. The only milk we use is UHT skimmed milk (don't all shout 'yuk' at once). I loathe milk and this is the only kind I use.

I went to do my weekly shop, which includes picking up the usual litre of milk but the shelves were devoid of UHT milk, with no date for its return.

This crisis is getting serious when my afternoon cup of tea is threatened.

Calendargirl Thu 12-Mar-20 14:55:54

Izal.

Memories of being a constipated child, sitting on the loo trying to ‘go’, and passing the time studying the paper with the words ‘Izal germicide’. I read it as ‘Izal jer-my-kid’ and always wondered what this jer-my-kid was all about!

Oh happy days!

There were loo rolls in our local supermarket an hour ago. Not the full range, but plenty.
And apparently the shop had been extremely busy this morning.

No paracetamol though

Gwenisgreat1 Thu 12-Mar-20 16:23:21

Don't tell anyone, but when I was a child we used newspaper cut up. If this gets out we will not be able to buy a newspaper!!!

annsixty Thu 12-Mar-20 16:43:10

Just had e-mail about my order from Sainbury's . No toilet rolls, no Pears soap.
No raisins they are sending sultanas, no thankyou, kitchen rolls, may keep those but final straw, Wrights Coal tar soap, no thankyou very much,or am I better keeping it, just in case things get really bad?

Welshwife Thu 12-Mar-20 16:47:01

The tag line to this was - asking to be burgled

annsixty Thu 12-Mar-20 17:03:27

Am I being silly to now regret not getting extra supplies in?
I have one spare pack of 9 toilet rolls.
Nothing extra bought "just in case" except for one major concession, I have 3 extra boxes of my cat's favourite food.
Someone the other day suggested using paper napkins in an emergency, on checking I have just half a pack celebrating an Anniversary.

Doodledog Thu 12-Mar-20 17:07:19

Are people panic buying raisins, or is it just that your local branch has run out? How odd.

Madgran77 Thu 12-Mar-20 17:15:17

Needed to buy some loo rolls today. My usual 4 pack sold out. Only thing available was 2 packs of 24 rolls!!!!!

I also dont get the stockpiling ....least of all of loo rolls!!!

SalsaQueen Thu 12-Mar-20 17:33:19

I went to Asda earlier, and the only toilet rolls available were Asda's own brand, in packs of 24 - I wanted 12, but had to buy the 24 pack. The shop are limiting them to one pack per customer......what a pity they didn't do that on Monday.

vegansrock Thu 12-Mar-20 17:54:22

It was like Christmas at Aldi this morning. No tins of tomatoes or pasta - both made in Italy so wondering if they will be in short supply soon.

westendgirl Thu 12-Mar-20 18:08:01

Our food bank is running short, in particular there is a lack of UHT milk.
Wouldn't it be great if the supermarket raiders actually had to contribute to the food bank before they could buy.
Just a thought !
