Panic buying of loo roll

I don’t understand this; Coronavirus is ultimately a respiratory /lung disease, so why the bulk buying of loo roll? There is no associated bowel dysfunction. And in any case, fighting over the rolls is ridiculous. When I was growing up in the 60s we always used cloth hankies which my mum then washed and ironed. (The warm hanky felt lovely when one had a cold). So if there is a shortage why not just cut up an old sheet and use that? Am I missing something?

And to think this is supposed to be Great Britain. Some people disgust me.

There has been a lot of complaints on FB about corner shops hiking their prices for essential items, one shop has been reported to trading standards in our town.

I must say I have found myself wondering just how much of the stockpiled food will actually get eaten and whether in a couple of months people will be looking at the use by dates and saying 'we cannot eat that, it is past its use by date' and throwing it all away.

I guess if a lot of folk have stockpiled loo rolls there will soon be plenty on the shelves as half the population will be working through their stock.

And people are using wipes when they can’t get hold of loo roll . Soon the drains will overflow too and we’ll all get typhus.
Remember you must only flush the 3ps down there! ??

Just out of interest, I'm not stock piling. Honest!
I have looked on ebay and people are selling toilet rolls for a ridiculous price. One example, 24 soft touch toilet rolls for £99.99. and some people have bought them. The same goes for hand sanitiser. We haven't been able to get even 1 of those for our household.
It's a pity some are taking advantage of the situation.

I live near one of the largest Tesco supermarkets in the UK, and today there were no toilet rolls, kitchen rolls, bread, pasta, biscuits, soap powder, paper tissues, eggs, chicken and so forth.

I think the supermarkets are providing a necessary service not cashing in.
They are supplying the demand and in my local Waitrose and Lidl the prices have not been inflated.

I try and do a proportion of my shop with local independents and will try to support them more as they will be the casualties of this virus.

Supermarkets are having a great time cashing in - 'laughing all the way to the bank' as my mother would have said

harrigran ?

harrigran Sat 14-Mar-20 08:45:54

Already seen that one Jennifer, scribbled in the dust on a whote van.

JenniferEccles Fri 13-Mar-20 22:55:22

How long before some wag has a sign in his van ‘No toilet rolls kept in this van overnight’ ?!!

Callistemon Fri 13-Mar-20 22:14:55

Lots of toilet rolls in Lidl this morning.

You do get a better and more civilised class of customer in Lidl, though

I was about to post that one! - great minds think alike!

MissAdventure Fri 13-Mar-20 21:54:40

..

Thankfully Waitrose and the Co-op are much more civilised. The only thing in short supply seems to be UHT milk and neither store seemed fuller than normal.

Plenty of toilet rolls in our Tesco Express. They have got a notice next to an empty bit of shelf saying anti-bac hand gel is restricted to 5 per person. I’m not convinced they’ve ever sold anti-bac hand gel.

callgirl1 Fri 13-Mar-20 18:04:15

My cleaner said she took one of her clients to Asda this morning, and it was absolute mayhem. Queuing to get in, folk with trolleys piled high with toilet rolls, none on the shelves.

Joelise Fri 13-Mar-20 17:58:54

DD was in Sainsbury’s this morning, apparently it was manic . The lady on the tills, said it had been like this for the last two weeks, and people had been queuing outside the supermarket since 6.00 o’clock this morning ! If only the supermarkets would limit items such as loo rolls, anti bac soap etc. to just two packs per person, and that some people weren’t so selfish !

Callistemon Fri 13-Mar-20 16:39:52

I hope they have enough loo roll for Tom Hanks and his wife.

Wishing them both a full recovery

My friend, who is due to visit family in Australia this week, has been asked to take loo roll with her as there's none in the supermarkets there!!

NanTheWiser Fri 13-Mar-20 16:10:48

Plenty of loo rolls in a large Wilkinsons in a major shopping centre I went to today. I bought a 4 pack, to supplement the 5 rolls I already have - didn't want (or need) to cart a large pack around with me. Hopefully the shops will continue to stock up, and the panic buying will slow down soon. (No hand gel anywhere though!)

Callistemon Fri 13-Mar-20 14:59:47

There were plenty of packs of toilet paper in the supermarkets we went to yesterday and today
And no, we weren't stocking up, only on my favourite Lidl chocolate, unobtainable in Tesco.

We didn't buy toilet tissue btw, left it for those in need.
