.....to ask people to read the thread?

I don’t understand how people so often post the same thing as has been said many times before! I skipped a page by accident the other day (Pinot Grigio ? Dirty spectacles ?)and marydoll quite rightly pointed out that I was repeating what she had said. But then someone is on that thread again asking for the answer.....grrr! Not to mention the shepherds pie cottage pie thread with 83 identical explanations..... the asking for advice threads where you get “I think you should speak to a solicitor”. And three posts later “have you thought of seeing a solicitor “
Rant over ...

I haven’t seen the puzzle thread, but won’t the point be to try to solve it yourself? Not to scroll through looking at everyone else’s answers? In that case I’d just post my answer, then scroll up to see if it was right.

BlueBelle Mon 30-Mar-20 11:13:20

It is annoying some one comes on and says ‘thanks everyone you ve shown me what to do’ and then you get a stream of ideas, then the original posters says ‘yes thanks I ve solved the problem’ then you get another stream of ideas and you even get sone people opening threads two years old with an idea that’s been muted 2 years ago and it’s equally annoying if you come up with a well thought out mulled over idea and half a dozen posts on someone says oh have you thought of so and so and a stream of posts saying that’s a good idea well done you

Baggs Mon 30-Mar-20 11:13:37

BTW, marydoll there is a wink emoji after that post about it never being a waste of time to do maths wink

NotSpaghetti Mon 30-Mar-20 11:20:07

I’m with you on the “thank you it’s been solved” thing BlueBelle!
Really frustrating!

Marydoll Mon 30-Mar-20 11:23:31

Baggs, I know you too well. grin, not offended.

I was just getting really frustrated last night , but so pleased to see so many joining in and actually enjoying it.

Anyway, my baps are rising, I ahve more pressing matters to attend at the moment. wink

Sorry, but if someone is asking for an opinion, does it mean that just because you agree with someone else, doesn't mean that you shouldn't post your comment. If you don't want answers from complete strangers, just don't ask !

Callistemon Mon 30-Mar-20 11:36:51

Laughing now about about kittylester's plant dilemma thread the other day

Why read the threads if the answer is repeated endlessly and this annoys you?
There are lots of other threads.

I am used to repeating myself too, vena11
Just a 'yes dear' would suffice grin

Callistemon Mon 30-Mar-20 11:37:28

Sorry, didn't mean for my post to sound snappy, just curious.

Eloethan Mon 30-Mar-20 11:54:43

If there is a long thread, I think it is inevitable that people either don't read it all or skip through and miss certain information. I don't see it as a major problem. (and probably someone else has already made this point!).

If it gets tedious, just don't read it.

oldgimmer1 Mon 30-Mar-20 12:10:46

I don't know if anyone has said this yet (haven't read the thread blushgrin) but on a PC the OP appears at the top of every page, highlighted.

It really helps focus the mind on responding to the OP. Could that be an option?

Or, of the OP is satisfied with the responses, could s/he not indicate this in some way, to prevent repetition of answers?

Like a "thread closed" symbol or something?

SalsaQueen Mon 30-Mar-20 12:23:35

I tried to read your post, but after "shepherd's pie" blah blah, I'm afraid I got bored.........grin

sodapop Mon 30-Mar-20 12:26:05

I think sometimes people want to respond to the poster and let them know they are interested in their post. Quite often others have responded before me with the same comments I was going to make but I don't want to ignore the poster.
I agree withBlueBelle about resurrecting very old posts.

GrannyLaine Mon 30-Mar-20 12:33:13

Lucca YANBU

A thread is like a conversation: some posters are more interested in being heard rather than listening and then posting a considered reply.
I do accept that there is sometimes a crossover when you find that in the time you have been typing, three other people have chipped in.

Nonnie Mon 30-Mar-20 12:38:42

I find it mildly annoying when I have answered with an original thought and then someone else says the same and gets the credit for it grin. However I think it is courteous, if you haven't read the thread and wish to comment, to simply say you haven't read it. If its a long thread I can understand why we wouldn't read it all and I don't.

Pittcity Mon 30-Mar-20 13:14:34

Even GNHQ with their highlighted posts can't get the message over. Nearly every competition thread has entries after the winner has been announced.

lemongrove Mon 30-Mar-20 14:39:17

Agree with some others....doesn’t bother me at all, and often there are several long pages to wade through, no reason posters have to read all of them before they comment.
So yes OP I do think you are being unreasonable.

Lucca Mon 30-Mar-20 15:12:23

Thanks grannylaine.

Laughterlines Mon 30-Mar-20 15:20:55

My internet connection is so slow that even when I immediately reply to a post three or four have got in before me. I think that’s what’s happened here. No big deal.

Callistemon Mon 30-Mar-20 16:13:35

A similar thing with me, Laughterlines except that by the time I have typed out a post, corrected it (not always I must admit), there are several in between saying something similar

WOODMOUSE49 Mon 30-Mar-20 16:50:55

I did think I would leave a comment about thread but then I would have had to have read all 44 comments to be sure of not repeating something already said.

I bet someone else has already said this.wink

M0nica Tue 31-Mar-20 08:12:49

I have read all this thread before responding smile.

Whether one reads all the thread, rather depends on how long it is. When it gets up to 16 pages or more it is a bit much to expect someone to read all those pages before possibly making a one sentence response that may be very significant.

Also, like ordinary conversations, threads do evolve and develop as they go and there is no rule to say every response has to stay rigidly in line with the OP, sometimes the most interesting discusssions occur when the thread has evolved into something other than the OP.

I do not think it is possible to have a hard and fast rule. Sometimes I make one response to a thread and that is it. Other times I make a response and no more for several more days when I then notice that the thread has evolved and I then comeback to it and post several responses over a day, then drop out again. I will have not read every post on the 10 pages that intervene between my first and later posts

Of course there is repetition and fatuous remarks, threads are just conversations in print and is remarkable how much repetition, irrelevance and inanity there is in everyday and, even, serious conversations!

ValerieF Tue 31-Mar-20 17:21:18

I think people read a post and think they can help! They probably don't notice it is an 'old' post and it is probably right that old posts should be closed down?

Nothing to insist everyone reads every post before they post. If they do, great, if not then let them post as they want to? It will be totally ignored by the original poster if it is no longer relevant. Why do others get upset about it? Only wasting the actual posters time really isn't it? I don't think other posters need to get upset about it. Well just my opinion.

Chewbacca Tue 31-Mar-20 17:33:12

BlueBell @ 11.13 has it nailed! A few months ago I started an OP regarding having taken in a parcel for a neighbour and how I wasn't able to deliver it to them for several days. Lots of very helpful replies and suggestions. I then posted to say that the neighbours had called for the parcel and had explained why they hadn't collected it sooner. The thread died a natural death. Until a month or so later, it was resurrected by a helpful soul who posted to tell me that it was a "non problem" and I was making a mountain out of a molehill! grin

Naty Wed 22-Apr-20 18:49:49

I like people answering without reading other people's opinions. It's more genuine.

Nortsat Wed 22-Apr-20 19:08:19

There’s another aspect, people’s threads can cross.

I realise this doesn’t account for all of the repeated answers but it has happened to me ... I draft a reply and preview for grammar and sense, then by the time I have finalised my post, several more replies have been added, sometimes raising very similar points to my own.
