AIBU to be absolutely disgusted about the statue in Bristol?

Really upset that a status of Jen somebody (Don't know her last name) was erected in Bristol. Have no problem with the Colston statue being removed but some unknown woman then has a statue of herself put in it's place! I think this is a real cheek as I'm not aware that she has done anything wonderful for black people in Bristol or worked tirelessly to enrich their lives. Having worked in social care I know at least 3 black workers much more deserving of the honour. It shouldn't be some jumped up t... who put her arm in the air on the day of the BLM protests. It's been removed at a cost to Bristol city council, but just who does she think she is?

She didn't design or make the statue or put it up. That was somebody else. She did something at the rally that she felt was the thing to do. A lot of us do things on the spur of the moment in life, don't we? And a guy saw her action and decided to act on it. She wasn't/isn't responsible for that.

The artist who made the sculpture is Mark Quinn. I suspect he's the person you should be cross with sazzi.
Presumably, he was involved in it being put up on the plinth. I heard a local black artist complaining that Mark Quinn should have kept out of this and worked to support a black artist being commissioned to replace the statue of Edward Colton.

The artist Marc Quinn made and put up the statue, so I suppose if you want to berate someone it should be him.

sazz1 I don't know that Jen Reid was even aware of the statue before it went up.

It was sculpted by some artist from London.
It has gone now, awaiting collection by the artist or donation to a museum where it could stand alongside Colston's statue with the history explained so that we and future generations will be aware.

Callistemon Sat 18-Jul-20 10:17:17

who does she think she is

She thinks she is a BLM protestor who helped to remove Colston's statue then stood on the plinth with her arm raised.

Quinn thought she seemed so symbolic that he created a statue of her and put it on the plinth. How did they manage that without anyone noticing?
Who does he think he is? He's not even Bristolian!!

It was the artist Marc Quinn who decided to make the statue after the woman's photo was in the news. He did it himself, as a temporary statement, and apparently hoped it would keep the statue discussion in the public eye. He made it at his own expense and will pay the council's removal costs.

He will now sell the statue and give the money to local charities.
I think it will raise quite a lot.

He's a well known artist (remember Alison Lapper Pregnant?) and it captures a moment in time.

I don't really understand why you are so cross about it. Ok, it was "against planning" - but no harm is done and maybe some good will come of it.
Personally I think they should have taken a bit longer to remove it.

NotSpaghetti Sat 18-Jul-20 10:19:23

Sorry, that took me so long to type, I think others got there ahead of me!

GagaJo Sat 18-Jul-20 10:19:55

So he paid for it, paid for it to be removed and now is going to give the selling cost to charity?

How dare he?! These damn activists. Trying to save the world and do good. It's all just me, me, me.

"I don't know that Jen Reid was even aware of the statue before it went up"

She worked with the artist and was aware it was being put up. The Mayor of Bristol has said the cost of it's removal will run into thousands of pounds, as the city is currently millions of pounds in deficit it is money that can hardly be spared.

Oldwoman70 Sat 18-Jul-20 10:24:14

GagaJo I haven't heard that he is paying for it to be removed - I think it has been suggested he should but as far as I am aware he hasn't made that commitment

NotSpaghetti Sat 18-Jul-20 10:24:47

Please read the thread...

he is happy to pay the removal costs - not sure if he has or not as of today but he can and will.

sazz1 Sat 18-Jul-20 10:24:56

I'm very supportive of equality in all respects. I'm sure she was aware and agreed to it. If there was to be a statue someone who works to help people who have been discriminated against, a charity worker who is actively fighting racism, somone who was killed in a racist attack etc would have been ideal.

brigid18 Sat 18-Jul-20 10:25:59

Without activists we would not be where we are today, we have a lot to be grateful for, wemons rights, conservation etc

Grandad1943 Sat 18-Jul-20 10:26:49

Has anyone obtained any links confirming that this artist is paying the cost of the statue removal and donating its sale revenue to charity?????????

If so please post those link.

I don't know that Jen Reid was even aware of the statue before it went up

From media reports, JR was contacted by Marc Quinn, via social media, to discuss the idea of the sculpture and she told me she wanted to collaborate.

timetogo2016 Sat 18-Jul-20 10:27:28

The irony is that Marc Quinn is a very wealthy White man.
All she was was a protester big deal.
It`s been taken down anyway.

I really don't know why it would cost thousands of pounds for its removal.

No wonder the Council is in debt if it squanders money like that!
Always get three quotes.

is GN becoming goady like MN, i wonder...

Callistemon Sat 18-Jul-20 10:29:01

I didn't realise that Jen Rei had worked with the artist.
When first interviewed on local news she seemed surprised hmm

We taught them all they know. We are their mothers.

eazybee Sat 18-Jul-20 10:30:16

Well, opportunist Marc Quinn has gained a great deal of free publicity.

EllanVannin Sat 18-Jul-20 10:30:36

It didn't cost a penny for the removal of the previous one so why not adopt the same method ?
