Bitten by a harlequin ladybird

That sounds quite bad starlily106 It doesnt sound as if it will clear up by tomorrow. Do get more antibiotics if you can.

I've been bitten once by a ladybird, but nothing like that.

Do you know if they were going to test the pus to isolate what type of bacteria it could have been?

They didn't say if they were going to do any tests, but one nurse looked harlequin ladybirds up on the net as she hadn't heard of them. I know they are from Asia and they carry an STD, but it is a fungal infection , and is killing the British ladybirds. It's best to try to keep them out of the house if you can, because they hibernate and some people have found they have hundreds of them in their lofts. At the top of my street there is one of the green BT boxes and just now it is covered by them, I think they are trying to get inside for the winter.

i think you should go back to the hosp, to be on the safe side.

Namsnanny, I do have an extra 2 days antibiotics, but was told not to use them if my finger was ok after 5 days, so at least I have got them if I need them.

they may not be strong enough, or specific enough.
don't take any chances.
i have seen soft tissue infections that have become very serious.
not something that can be a wait and see situation.

Go back to the hospital H ladybirds are usually a harmless bite but if you are allergic to the bite it can be nasty like any innocent bite
I had the weeniest of spots you could barely see on my toe but within days and two lots of strong antibiotics from doctor and hospital it was climbing up to my thigh I had to go on intravenous antibiotics at the hospital and they worked

I d take the anti biotics but get yourself back to Aand E today

I think that you have been very unlucky.

Years ago there was a plague of harlequins on the south coast. They also nipped, but I don’t remember anyone being so unlucky as to have such a reaction.

I found lots of these ladybirds on my kitchen windows a few days ago.
I didn't realise they had such a nasty bite.

Hope you get better soon, sounds horrible. We rarely see ladybirds here but I have seen yellow ones with black spots, don’t know what they are. I would definitely go back to the doctor if it were me, sounds nasty.

starlily, I agree with all that has been said. I know you have two days of antibiotics left but please do not take any chances. Severe infections can take a very nasty turn ! Better safe than sorry - make your way to A and E ASAP! .
I had no idea about harlequin lady birds or how they differ from British ladybirds - didn't really ladybirds could bite ! Many posters are worried about you , please keep us posted .

Funnily enough our DD2 in Yorkshire said at the weekend they’d had swarms (?) of them across their garden too. I said to keep indoors and close windows-I remember the swarms of them down south years ago and what a nuisance they are. Hope OP fully recovers

Definitely watch out for that line creeping up towards your arm as that is an indication of an infection heading for your heart!!!

This sounds awful. I have been bitten by ladybirds and ants but nothing like this. Please let us know if the infection subsides and how you get on.

Are you sure there wasn't a wasp hidden there?

it doesn't really matter what the original bite or trauma was; sepsis can develop from anything and nothing seemingly.
i've seen it in someone where there was no external wound.

Kali a ladybird can bite, normally they are minor bites but it only needs a person to be allergic to the venom to cause a problem or for there to be a germ on the surface of the skin in that place for an infection to set in
My daughter got cellulitis from a tiny bite on her lower arm that she didn’t even know she had had, probably a little spider, nothing at all to see but it took first one lot of antibiotics then two lots of strong antibiotics taken together to get rid of it

Thanks for all the messages . My finger at last seems to be improving, but it is still a bit twingy at times. The swelling has gone down a lot, but around the nail area and the side where the bite was my finger is still purple. Not nice to look at, as the skin is peeling off, but definitely on the mend. I have finished the antibiotics but will go back to A&E if I think I need to. At least now I can use my hand to do things I found impossible when it was so sore. It's amazing how having a poorly index finger can affect you. Once again , thanks for all the messages.
