Scotish midwifery to ban The word “Mother”

I am sad to see the Scottish intend to ban the word “Mother” from maternity units, leaflets etc.,

Who on earth comes up with these ideas? I would think most of us are proud to be mothers and the word always makes one feel safe and secure and loved. I always as a child knew when my mother was around she would make everything alright. I know not every child is so lucky as I was, But please don’t ban the word “Mother”. What do other Grans think?

There's another post on this, I think it was posted last week.
They'll never get everyone to stop using the word, so I don't know why they're bothering to try. It's just ridiculous!

There was indeed a thread - I think it was eventually deleted.

Mother’s Day in Scotland should be interesting in 2022! ?

Allsorts Thu 28-Oct-21 10:35:01

What a load of rhubarb. I hope no one takes any notice, who came up with this crackpots idea? He/she should be mentally assessed.

Maybe 'people who have given birth' day so nobody is offended ?

The previous thread on this had many many articulate Grans furious about the deletion of the word mother to placate a tiny number of transwomen. It was kept going by a couple of Grans arguing the other way. No compromise on either side and it descended into the usual acrimony. It was deleted.

Those of us who are mothers will remain mothers whether midwives are allowed to use the word or not. Are they allowed to use the word 'mum'?

What a load of smelly brown stuff.

This confuses me, is the word Father still used or is it only Mothers who have been deleted ??????

Aveline Thu 28-Oct-21 12:13:20

Felice- yes.angry

The thread was deleted because it inevitably got derailed by woke issues. The discussion was centred around the deletion of the word mother from the Scottish constitution but it shifted when someone brought up a trans man - a journalist- who stopped testosterone therapy to have a baby, then went back to living as a man, insisting that the little boy call them dad. Then they wanted the birth certificate to be changed so that they were not shown as the mother. I think they are now having a second child. It threw up a lot of issues including the ethics regarding the GRC, for which there has to be a commitment to living as a man.

The Scottish government have not only banned the word from NHS maternity services but Scottish Civil Service have also agreed to write the word out of all future maternity policy. Various alternative terms have been suggested such as ‘people who give birth’ and chest feeders’.

Frankly I think the world has gone utterly mad. A minority of activists have hijacked the LGBTQ community and are hell bent on control. Women are now expected to share safe spaces and obliged to compete on the sports field with trans women. We’re also forced to share jail cells with convicted rapists who have transgendered. Now, it seems we’re supposed to surrender our innate femininity and gender terminology in the name of ‘inclusion’, and it would seem that government is quite happy to support the establishment of ‘rights’ for one group, by trampling over those of others.

This world gets crazier by the minute!

But why should the word ‘mother’ give offence to anyone ?It seems that there’s no attempt at a compromise here by any group other than innate women. If you don’t choose to identify the word, you’re free to ignore it, but please don’t infringe on the rights of those who embrace it.

As far as I can see the word ‘Father’ is still intact and seemingly doesn’t offend anyone. I can’t decide whether this is a case of men having it all their own way, or just that the activists haven’t got around to it yet !!

Blossoming Thu 28-Oct-21 12:27:52

I shall still be using the word mother.

Thanks for this summary Pammiel.
I don’t understand why the earlier thread was deleted. There were some interesting comments in a robust debate. Someone/people must have reported the thread. I can’t understand why.

NO ONE has BANNED the word mother, its on a document that HASN;T BEEN THROUGH HOLYROOD and affects only maternity leave. Its not about trans women either ,there are many others it concerns who wouldn't get maternity leave or would have to jump thrugh hoops to get it ,,even though they are the primary carer . I do wish people would take in facts before having a meltdown.Nobody will ever stop the public from calling their mum MOTHER or whatever else they call her .

SueDonim Thu 28-Oct-21 12:59:51

Ah yes, shouting at people always helps one’s argument.

Alegrias1 Thu 28-Oct-21 13:06:40

Pammie1 - there is no Scottish constitution, so the words weren't being removed from it because it doesn't exist.

The "chest feeders" were in Brighton, which is quite a long way from Scotland.

Sometimes shouting is the only option.

Gwyneth Thu 28-Oct-21 13:07:22

I feel terribly sorry for the children of these people. They must be so confused.

Zoejory Thu 28-Oct-21 13:11:28

We had a spot of chest feeding in the NW England. But I don't think it has taken off, particularly. I'm fine with someone saying chest feeding if it suits them but I think we can all safely agree that it's never going to replace breast-feeding.

I think the media throws things out there at times to waken us all up. The more serious issues don't seem to get as much interest.

Aveline Thu 28-Oct-21 13:20:17

It's a govt policy document though. Worrying in the light of potential self ID of gender. The concern is the effect it's all having on women's hard earned rights.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 28-Oct-21 13:34:50

Shall we open a book and place bets on how long it will be before this thread starts to descend into the acrimony for which I assume the other one was deleted?

Elegran Thu 28-Oct-21 14:28:44

As always, people get very aeriated ( in both directions) without reading the source material.

As has been said, no-one is banning the word mother, and patients in maternity units, as in all hospital units, or collecting children from school or comforting them when they are hurt or unhappy, can choose what they prefer to be called and referred to as. (Grammatists may say I shouldn't end a sentence with a preposition, and that one has TWO. I don't care. It makes sense.) The document is a policy one, setting out aims for those drafting official docs and legislation, so as to include those who don't wish to be called (or referred to as) mothers. All very laudable and inclusive.

What most of those on the deleted thread would asking was why not ADD the preferred category names for those non-mothers instead of REMOVING the traditional and universally understood name for the person who conceived, gestated and gave birth to a child (which only a natal female parent can do and natal male parent cannot) and REPLACING it with another term which is so general it may as well just be "person".

It got inflamed because a couple of posters argued the cause of non-mothers very enthusiastically, and considered those who disagreed with them as bigoted trans-haters.
