I was in the kitchen with the back door wide open. I was busy and talking out loud to myself! I turned around and there was a workman standing looking at me. I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me. Trying to think of something to say so he would not think I was mad I turned around and began talking to an imaginary cat. I felt so awful.. please tell me I am not alone in this or is it too late for me?

my husband has never lived it down that he had a whole conversation with himself next to a baby monitor upstairs whilst we all heard it downstairs. It was like a telephone conversation. Thank god no one was in the room downstairs that he was going on about blush

I was weeding the garden when a neighbour passed ,he was looking at me a bit strangely .I only realised I'd been talking to my cat who was sitting on the garage roof watching me as he disappeared round the corner .I did explain on his return trip though and he said he talks to his dog as its the only thing/person who gives him sensible answers ,Seems to be a common occurence

The nicest talking to yourself or pets story was on MN a few months ago. A woman changed her mind about her grumpy old man neighbour when she overheard him as he walked past with his elderly dog. He was talking to the dog in a kind gentle way explaining where they were going for their walk and then back home for their supper, like a kindly grandfather taking a toddler.to the park. For some reason this lovely story stayed with me!

That’s lovely Paddy. I really miss having my girl to talk to.

I talk to myself,I'm also told I'm getting like my father who argued with the television. I tell the washer and tumbler to shut up when I am doing something else and they bleep.
I've also practised a lecture I had to give out loud and was unfortunately heard by a friend on the corridor who answered one of the questions I was asking an empty room. We had such a good laugh.blush

I had often noticed and been amused by people in supermarkets muttering and talking to themselves - quite loudly sometimes. Both men and women.

They're usually trying to find some specific article and are getting frustrated!

Then I overheard myself one day saying "Where on earth have they hidden the XX?!"

Yesterday a friend who keeps her phone in her bra unwittingly activated the video camera and streamed everything she was doing round her house, broadcasting it live to everyone she knows on Facebook! ?? Luckily, it was fairly mundane stuff, and she hadn’t needed a loo break or anything too embarrassing. grin

Oh no! That would be mortifying ?. If I did that you can bet your boots that I’d do something I’d never live down.

That could only work if the bra was lacy or transparent and if you weren't wearing clothes over the top, surely?

I've never kept my phone in my bra as I thought they emit radiation?

I talk to the kitchen appliances, when the washer beeps to let me know it is finished I shout " I'm coming" and when it beeps again " yes I heard you the first time". I have an overhead cupboard that I keep banging my head on so I now let rip with fruity language that I would never have dreamt of using when DH was alive. One of these days I will get caught out.

Don't you believe the story?

I assumed that the phone was poking over the neckline of the wearer's dress/jumper/top - not that it was entirely concealed. You'd do it that way for easy access, surely? I wouldn't 'keep' my phone in there, but I've been known to use it as a hands-free facilitator grin.

Surely , it would be very uncomfortable .

There was an article and warning against doing it as mobiles can overheat .

Burns created by one were photographed and shown as an example of the danger .

I was worried about
radiation, but apparently there 's no risk .

Me too HowVeryDareYou,doesn`t bother me in the slightest.
It`s just thinking out loud.

SueDonim Tue 12-Apr-22 12:35:48

I could show you the video if you don’t believe me! I think the phone camera was poking out the top of her clothing, she seemed to have on a loose shirt as the view was obscured from time to time with what seemed to be fabric flapping back and forth as she bent down etc.

I wouldn’t keep my phone in my bra either but I know a number of people who do.

I often have to say to people ‘was I talking to myself just now’ and laugh. What’s worrying is that I honestly wouldn’t know if I had been talking to myself as I do it all the time…

ALANaV Tue 12-Apr-22 12:42:11

Ha ha ...yes ! especially since mask wearing ...I find I am talking to myself with mouth moving behind the mask .........I have told myself I must STOP or I will be doing it without the mask !!!! Also, ha ha again ......I asked our Manageress the other day if she had found a pink pussy cat in the garden as it had fallen from my windowsill ..........like you, I turned round and saw a workman standing behind me !!!! I live in a retirement flat ....I think he wanted to get out fast as he thought it was more like a home for the old and confused (it is over 55's !) ...........I eventually found the pink pussy cat (a wooden cat from Greece !) it had fallen behind a radiator ...dare'nt tell anybody !

jaylucy Tue 12-Apr-22 12:45:22

I'm another that talks to themself!
Most embarrassing time I was spotted was when cleaning one of our local churches and I was trying to spot any cobwebs that I might have missed- saying "Where are you little fluffy dusty things? I need to find you all, and the eight legged beasties that make you too !"
I heard a noise behind me , and there stood the church treasurer , standing there, giving me a very strange look !

I talk to my cats and especially the dogs when I am going out or going to bed. I do also have heated discussions with my late husband when I can't do something or when anything breaks down in the house!! Good job I have no neighbours!!

Bilboben Tue 12-Apr-22 12:49:37

There is nothing wrong with talking to yourself. However if the walls start talking back to you. That is the time to worry.

Grantanow Tue 12-Apr-22 12:52:15

It's important to have a good listener to hand!

Yes, the radiation that they emit could harm the phone.

This is so reassuring for me to know I’m not the only one! I re-enact entire scenarios out loud and sort out all sorts of stuff that’s going on in my head. To my ultimate mortification, I had a conversation with myself about my son, while driving his car, only to realise that his dashcam was picking up every word…I still wish the ground would swallow me up every time I think about it, but to this day I have no idea if he ever listened to it, and I can’t even find out without landing myself in it ? Strangely, the same son also talks out loud to himself…my husband thinks there’s something seriously wrong with us, but apparently it’s quite a healthy thing to do!

Amalegra Tue 12-Apr-22 12:59:44

I have ALWAYS talked to myself and it’s a habit I’m too old to break now! I do get some funny looks sometimes which I largely ignore ( I’ll never see that stranger again, right?) or I might try to turn it into a busy hum! My children often challenge me but I laugh it off as being part of senility (it’s not!). I think it enables me to work things through in my mind without disturbing anyone else. I have no intention of ever trying to stop as I can remember doing it from childhood onwards. And it’s a pretty harmless habit really, isn’t it?!

jennilin Tue 12-Apr-22 13:03:59

Talking to myself is alright as long as no one replies.
