Fed up with squirty sauce bottles

How many of you are fed up with the squeezy bottles where the sauce doesn't come out straight? Recently I have had tomato/brown sauce shoot up the tiles of worktop, all over the clean jumper I had on, and lastly (but quite funny) across the table onto my husbands plate! Am I doing something wrong? Next time I get one that squirts downwards I shall save the lid when it's empty, and swap it over.

Have you tried washing the lid of the bottle? It might be gunked up with sauce, making it not come out straight

MaizieD Mon 22-May-23 11:34:28

They annoy me because they stop being easy to squirt from when they are only about one third full. You end up throwing some sauce away because it won't come out. I don't like waste.

So we just don't buy them, apart from tomato ketchup for my OH's addiction to the yukky stuff. It doesn't seem to come in glass bottles any more.

I agree. You can never empty them completely either. I prefer glass bottles with a wide neck so you can get all the product out. I’m thinking of the mayonnaise jars, but even mayonnaise comes in those dratted squeezy bottles now.

I only use salad cream (Heinz original) from a squeezy bottle. I store it lid down, not in the fridge, and when it gets a bit reluctant I give it a bit of a thump down after using it. This seems to work pretty well, as well as wiping the inside of the lid once or twice.

Same system with Simple light moisturising lotion except for the last few squeezes when I add a little water and shake it up.

MrB uses loads of sauces (especially chili ones). He doesn't seem to mind icky lids.

Baggs with tubes such as for hand cream or facial products, I cut them across when it gets difficult to get the product out and there’s always loads left in the tube, that just won’t squeeze out.

Elegran Mon 22-May-23 11:58:45

I do that too, Maddyone. Sometimes I am still finishing up the cut bottles weeks later. They must make most of their profit from what we throw away.

Storing squeezy bottles upside helps as well. The stuff is ready to come out, and you squeeze the bottle at the end that is full of air, which pushes out the contents.

MaizieD, how right you are about being a pain once there is a third left. Once that happens my arthritic fingers struggle and the air turns blue. Mind you, I tend not to eat sauces much nowadays as they are usually filled with sugars.

I do that too - it's surprising how much is still in them. The ones which do annoy me are the pump bottles, especially as with some of them there's no way to open them to get the last bits out.

Plastic tubes of toothpaste, tomato puree etc are just as bad. You can't roll up the ends as you can with a metal tube. Storing those with cap down after giving them a good thump down shifts the contents to the opening end.

I wash the lids on squirty bottles each time I use them. I use a jam spoon with curved top to get any left over sauce etc from inside rim of bottle.

Witzend Mon 22-May-23 18:19:15

I will only buy mayonnaise, ketchup, etc., in glass now, and not just because of cutting down on plastic. Dh got very short shrift not long ago for buying squirty mayonnaise instead of a jar, out of which you can scoop all remains with a spoon.
Ditto one of Golden Syrup! I only use it once in a blue moon but give me the good old tin every time.

Yep. I do this with toothpaste tubes too. Usually get a week's worth of toothpaste out of them that's impossible to squeeze out! It's a bit messy on one's toothbrush – none of your cute little pea-sized blobs – but it still works the same 😂

If I do buy mayonnaise in a squeezy bottle, I store it upside down in the fridge. Then the conundrum is how to get the last few drops out of the bottle. My solution is to add a few teaspoons of balsamic vinegar and shake the bottle vigorously before using the mixture as a salad dressing.

Baggs Mon 22-May-23 18:56:47

Excellent idea, anno! Consider it copied.

I hate them with a vengeance
I too cut them in half almost if you don’t go right through you can put them together until the next time you use it

I don't think they taste as good in these plastic containers as they do in glass bottles. They do something to it to make it squeezable, I suspect.

Grayling1 Mon 22-May-23 23:08:43

Before the squeezy bottles were marketed, as part of a home based survey, I was sent a large squeezy bottle of the "real" mayonnaise to test and report back. I gave a very negative report back but sad to say they obviously didn't listen to me but when they appeared in the shops I knew to avoid them!!!!!

I love this ketchup- in its glass bottle.

Lovetopaint037 Tue 23-May-23 10:51:08

Same problem here. Looking at your posts I have just ordered a non squeezy tomato sauce from Sainsburys.

Love the squeezy bottles, find them so much easier than trying to get sauce or whatever out of old style bottles. Presently kicking myself for ordering mayo on line and forgetting to tick the 'no substitution' box and ending up with a non-squeezy bottle.

I find them as easy as glass, I always start second bottle then tip first one into second (when there is space) so I do empty them all and do not throw anything away.

HannahLoisLuke Wed 24-May-23 11:54:58

I find adding a little vinegar to brown/tomato sauce works. Lemon juice for mayo.

25Avalon Wed 24-May-23 12:01:19

If you unscrew the top you can get into the bottle and use a knife or spoon to get the last of the sauce out.

RakshaMK Wed 24-May-23 12:12:45

I like them, but when they stop squirting, I use a small long handled silicone spoon (from Lakeland I think) to get the rest out.
