Lost job. So upset.

I am so upset for my son, he was due to start a new job the week after lockdown began, he was finishing his notice at his last place, but because of lockdown that ended a few days sooner than expected.

He got a phone call this morning rescinding his job offer, to say he is devastated is an understatement.

If he had stayed with his old job he would have been back at work now.

He has had no income during the virus as neither company would pay him and he couldn’t claim any benefits as he had a job.

Now he has no job.

Poor man, afraid this is going to happen to many.

Furret Tue 26-May-20 12:02:47

That is dreadful. However he’s only just found this out and, depending on his line of work, other opportunities might present themselves, even it just short term.

I feel so sorry for your son, and for you, Minigrandma. What a dreadful situation.

It doesn’t seem right, though, that he couldn’t claim benefits, as technically, he didn’t have a job. hmm I hope somebody who knows the system will be along to advise you. In the meantime, best wishes and thanks for you.

I'm so sorry to hear about that Minigrandma, what a worry. As Midgey said, we'll be hearing many more unfortunate stories in time to come. What on earth are they supposed to do without any money ? I really feel for those who are left in this situation, it's a nightmare.

Its so sad to hear this, can your son not go back to his previous employer and reapply for his old job ? some people who found themselves in the same predicament where furloughed by their previous employers which helped them.
Has your son now applied for UC he should do straight away and he will receive an up front payment of benefits to help him until he gets himself sorted,I wish him the best for the future its so hard for them at the moment.

I am so sorry for your DS, what a dreadful thing to happen.
My DD had only been in her new job a week or two when lockdown started in Brussels, she pondered whether she had made a mistake changing jobs. She is now back in the office and all appears well.
I do hope your DS can find another job in his field.

I'm so sorry, Minigrandma. I hope your son finds something soon.

As others have said, there will be a lot of others in a similar position, and maybe this, coupled with the fact that the government paid out so much to those in the furlough scheme, will mean that they will reassess the payments to those on Universal Credit and other benefits. It seems to me so unfair to pay out £2500 a month to people who have a job to go back to and are in a state of interrupted employment, whilst paying so little to those who are potentially facing longer without work.

I try to be optimistic in life, and I really hope that we use this awful virus as a springboard to finding a better way for everyone in our society.

Regardless of that, though, I hope he finds something soon. On the bright side, he must be in demand to have been in the position he was in, however unfortunate that turned out to be in the end.

How upsetting for him Minigrandma. Fingers crossed that he'll get something soon.

mini so sorry for your son. Mine lost a job in the financial crisis of years ago. Got another and was then made redundant again 6 weeks later just before Christmas. It was a distressing time as you say. He ended up getting two job offers on the same day. Hope your son finds something soon
Could he ask his previous employers to take him back? Sign on with an agency for part time work while looking for a job? Hope he has some good luck soon.

timetogo2016 Wed 27-May-20 10:10:28

So sorry for him Minigran, but could he ask for his old job back ?.
I has to be worth a try at least.
I wish him all the best and you too.

So sorry Mini your heart must ache for him. We’re just seeing the tip of the iceberg at the moment unfortunately. What an awful time this is for everyone. Good luck to him he’s proved himself by getting the job, he’ll get another one.flowers

Such a stressful time Minigrandma. I do feel for your son. My son in law couldn’t be furloughed as he is only 12 months in being self employed. He’s had no money at all from the government since lockdown. His wife, our youngest daughter, is a teacher and (fortunately)is well paid on £42k a year. That means he can’t (and shouldn’t - it’s taxpayers Money after all) get UC either.

They’ve taken a 3 month mortgage holiday to help tide them over. And childcare for their 2 children was £800 p.m. so that’s stopped too in the interim.

Soon he can get back to work. Childcare will be paid again. The mortgage will kick back in. Life will go on.

I do hope your son gets a job soon. He’s fallen between two stools. He’s young and hopefully resilient. He’ll bounce back.

Minigrandma … I feel for you and your son. It's such a worry isn't it?
Same thing happened with one of my sons. I feel so anxious on his behalf, I'm not sleeping, and I doubt he is also.

Urmstongran … Again similar situation with another of my sons.
Not a cent from the government, although his partner is at uni and only employed part time, so I'm not sure why they don't seem to be eligible?
Life for them certainly wont go back to being the same as it was before Covid.
His business will take at least 4 years to build up again. If he can even get the money to do so.

If we can help out we will, but as yet they are all coping, but how long for?

Sorry Minigrandma ….your thread. flowers

Namsnanny ?

I think there’s going to be a lot of catch up & hard financial times ahead.

Willow500 Thu 28-May-20 07:07:20

Sadly I think this is just the start of job losses. Once the furlough scheme forces companies to start contributing to employees pay there will be more.

My granddaughter lost her job 3 weeks ago after being kept on probation for several months. Luckily she found something else the same week and started her induction yesterday but not before her partner who had been furloughed from his job was finished last week. He would like to join the police but training is unpaid and they have rent and bills to pay so he may not be able to afford to.

I hope your son finds something soon Mini. As my husband has said they are at the front of the queue so may be luckier than those who follow.

Purplepixie Thu 28-May-20 09:33:29

Oh no, I feel so sorry for him. Sadly I think there are going to be an awful lot of people in the same boat and the whole country is going to turn into a sinking ship. I hope he is able to get something soon. Is he able to claim any Social Security money?

crazygranny Thu 28-May-20 09:56:05

So very sorry for your son and for you. It's hard when terrible things happen to our children.
Was your son given any reason for the withdrawal?
If he has received a formal offer perhaps he may have some claim.
It might be worth a legal consult.

TrendyNannie6 Thu 28-May-20 10:00:31

That’s awful how disappointing is that, such a worry. I feel there will be lots of this sort of thing taking place, wishing you both all the best and hoping something turns up for him very soon

annecordelia Thu 28-May-20 10:35:49

I really feel for him, that is a horrible combination of circumstances. It's hard for the young nowadays.

Gwenisgreat1 Thu 28-May-20 11:08:24

How dreadful, I do feel for him. He'll have to think of what is his Unique Selling Point and get back to looking for a job.

Sawsage2 Thu 28-May-20 11:10:46

My partner (60) had been in job for 3 weeks before lockdown so no money. Universal credit said he had to rely on me as I have a few savings, won't last long though, I'm retired just state pension, no company.

dragonfly46 Thu 28-May-20 11:23:26

How very worrying for you Minigrandma.

My son works for himself as a contractor and thought his contract would be terminated. Fortunately they renewed it but we are pleased he did not get the house they wanted to buy so are still renting.

I think many are going to be in this position but your son has experience and will surely get another job. It is the university leavers and school leavers who will suffer I fear especially with Brexit looming adding to the mix.

tigger Thu 28-May-20 11:48:20

I think he may be entitled to compensation if it was a written offer of a job which is binding.

annifrance Thu 28-May-20 11:57:06

That's really horrible for you all, especially your son. there were bound to be those who slipped through the net of support, I know it's difficult times but you would have thought that by now this Rabble would have managed to get things sorted. I do hope your son can find a way through this.
