I always considered this lady to be sensible and level headed.
But I found this article from Saturday's Daily Mail to be selfish and petulant and I'm surprised that such sentiments should be published.
Does she really want to kill her granny?
Is she really urging others to emulate this behaviour@

You can say it serves me right for reading such a rag - but I'm appalled all the same!

Ilovecheese Tue 15-Sep-20 11:30:18

I read the article from your link. She does seem to have a large sense of entitlement for herself. Apart from being sensible about the pandemic and the likelihood of a second wave, is she really that certain that her inlaws would not like to see their own families at Christmas sometimes instead of having to go to hers.

Good point.

I thought I was going to read an article about euthanasia of grannies as protecting the old is curtailing the lives of the young.

It’s the Mail - I didn’t expect rational thinking, but I have a certain sympathy with the gust of the article. If someone qualified, independent and respectable explained the reasoning behind the so-called ‘rule of six’ and why it differs between the home nations, (and whether it will apply to government advisors) I would have more sympathy with it.

As it is, I worry that all the divisions being down by the way this crisis is being handled will go on far beyond a cure, and I am by no means convinced that we’ll get one soon.

The ‘United kingdom’ has never felt more fractured. It started with Brexit and has gone from bad to worse. We are not stepping back and looking for solutions to problems, but are being encouraged to behave like toddlers and shout ‘it’s their fault!’ and being told to ‘do as I say, not what I do’ or ‘just because!’.

I think it’s a highly irresponsible article, but what you’d expect from the Daily Mail.

No one actually knows what the incidence of Covid will be at Christmas. It may be that restrictions can be lifted by then. It’s 3.5 months away.

Iam64 Tue 15-Sep-20 11:45:05

The DM is on one of it's non campaigns. Sarah Vine wrote a similar piece yesterday, in which she said she disagrees with Michael and will ignore covid bully Marshalls.
Its on the same lines as the non story about last night of the proms, with the DM now claiming it led to Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Brittannia being played and sung.
When the rule of six changes for Christmas (and hopefully other festivals) the DM will say it won it.

ExD Tue 15-Sep-20 12:04:50

What I hate is the sense of entitlement - I'm not going to obey silly rules.
IMO if everyone had obeyed the silly rules in the first place we'd have had a better change of being on the way to recovery.
( ... and I DID say I knew the DM printed a lot of rubbish so nothing useful can be gained by pointing that out again!)

janeainsworth Tue 15-Sep-20 12:06:10

Iam I think it’s more than a non-campaign, I think it’s actively encouraging people to flout the guidance. I don’t like the idea of the marshals, or the suggestion that we should inform on our neighbours, but these are unprecedented times and we can’t just think of ourselves and our immediate families. Perhaps it’s unrealistic to expect responsible journalism from our gutter press though.
I’ve just checked the figures for Northumberland on the Kings College COVID 19 website.
Yesterday we had 225 active cases in the county. Today we’ve got 340.
That’s a very worrying rate of increase.

Not the time to be encouraging people to ignore the guidelines.

Lucca Tue 15-Sep-20 12:13:30

Thoroughly irresponsible. Also why are the Covid marshals automatically dubbed “bully”? This presumably from a DM columnist who would support our “wonderful Police” on all occasions. I feel rather sorry for anyone round her dinner table......

janeainsworth Tue 15-Sep-20 12:23:12

Also why are the Covid marshals automatically dubbed “bully”? Yes I noticed that too Lucca.
Just setting up people to be antagonistic to them.
I read somewhere they are to be recruited from ‘existing council staff’.
I don’t supposed many of them realised that was what they were signing up to when they took their jobs!

Whingingmom Tue 15-Sep-20 12:25:35

All I can say is thank goodness she’s not a relative of mine. Christmas at her house sounds dictatorial and enforced “fun”. And what an entitled attitude - regardless of opinions on the “rule of 6” it’s glaringly obvious that the more people mix together, the more the disease will spread.

Lucca Tue 15-Sep-20 12:27:36

Oh dear I just heard my mother’s voice coming out of my mouth saying “ghastly woman !”

Bellanonna Tue 15-Sep-20 12:29:13

How irresponsible.

Kate1949 Tue 15-Sep-20 12:35:45

I mentioned this a few days ago on the Coronavirus/Grandchildren visits thread. I think Bel is a disgrace..

EllanVannin Tue 15-Sep-20 12:44:24

Typical of those who don't think they'll be old themselves one day. Can't be doing with folk like that.
Sadly, there are a lot of people like her with the same attitude.

Iam64 Tue 15-Sep-20 12:48:08

Thanks for making me rethink my post janeainsworth. Lesson, don’t post without thinking. You’re right , this is a campaign against the covid regulations.
They’re on a roll against Johnson

janeainsworth Tue 15-Sep-20 13:01:42

Iam I think you were right in your prediction that by Christmas there’ll be a relaxation & the DM will claim credit!

Mamie Tue 15-Sep-20 15:12:19

Well she may not think she will be old herself one day, but she is 73..... I used to like her articles in the Guardian years ago, but I think she has lost the plot.

Callistemon Tue 15-Sep-20 15:19:48

Does she really want to kill her granny?
She is the granny, isn't she?

I thought I was going to read an article about euthanasia of grannies as protecting the old is curtailing the lives of the young.
Doodledog I don't know why I'm laughing at that. ?
It's not funny (oh yes it is!). Black humour.

Perhaps they all live together and can isolate in one big happy family.

Callistemon Tue 15-Sep-20 15:23:36

Not the time to be encouraging people to ignore the guidelines.

Perhaps if we all stick to the guidelines now, the situation could improve and we could enjoy a get together at Christmas.

AGAA4 Tue 15-Sep-20 16:28:35

Unfortunately some people will follow her skewed thinking.

Poppyred Tue 15-Sep-20 16:35:37

Love Bel Mooney always full of wise words and common sense.

I think she is rebelling against the rules that change on an almost daily basis...and never makes much sense.

Really ? Not this time she isn’t. Full of something else sad to say.

Poppyred Tue 15-Sep-20 16:41:26

I disagree Luca.

Poppyred Tue 15-Sep-20 16:41:49

Lucca even.
