What current day words drive you up the wall?

I guess I must be getting older and grumpier! I used to go with the flow.

I cannot stand
Woke, wokery.
This arvo,
Somethink.
The olds (I do sometimes laugh at that).
Bit (of water)ie drop.

Mind you guess I am very lucky if that’s all I have to worry about.

What are your pet hate words.

Ashcombe Sun 07-Aug-22 22:07:57

Can I get? (May I have?)
No worries.
Anything having "for you" appended to it.

Gillycats Sun 07-Aug-22 22:10:03

Aks (instead of ask)
I ain’t gonna lie
Sick
‘Can I get’ is my biggest hate!

Grannybags Sun 07-Aug-22 22:12:23

My bad

Poppyjo My Mum used to go mad if I said bit instead of drop if talking about liquid!

Greenfinch Sun 07-Aug-22 22:14:41

From the get-go

Doodledog Sun 07-Aug-22 22:17:25

Uni

I got your back
Can I get
Awesome
You guys
The endless use of f&&k in USA shows

Grandma70s Sun 07-Aug-22 22:22:23

Bit instead of drop? Never heard it. How does that work?

Get-go is awful. I also don’t like the almost universal call (verb) for telephone, as in “I’ll call this evening”. Makes me think the speaker will turn up on my doorstep.

‘Reach out to’ instead of contact.

Chewbacca Sun 07-Aug-22 22:33:08

'ya right? Instead of "Hi, how are you?"
"You guys" is just cringe worthy
"Like" said every other word: "So, I was, like, going to the mall and I was like super busy, like I had, like no time to waste at all, like every second counted and I was like rushing like crazy!" Like grrrrr!

annodomini Sun 07-Aug-22 23:28:16

Up for grabs. I keep hearing that 'medals are up for grabs at the Games today'. It's such an unpleasant way of saying that there are medals to be won.

Kate1949 Sun 07-Aug-22 23:41:16

'Journey' for life experiences.

You took the words right out of my mouth (I hope that hasn't upset anyone). Exactly what I think.
Calling everyone guys.
Like like like like
Constant swearing on TV
Sick (where on earth did than come from?)
And finally....
no yes (which is it?) when replying to a question.

nanna8 Mon 08-Aug-22 05:14:57

Yes- journey. What are we, some sort of train? Also woke, trans, and I’m beginning to get sick of global warming every 5 seconds, too.

Lucca Mon 08-Aug-22 06:17:41

Not that anyone on GN is remotely intolerant…..

Parsley3 Mon 08-Aug-22 06:44:23

Get back to going with the flow OP. Any objections to life is too short?

Mollygo Mon 08-Aug-22 06:59:21

Woke! DH thought it was an acronym for We Obviously Know Everything.
My bad
I’m allergic to-when used instead of ‘I don’t like’ or ‘I don’t want to eat that’.
Outside the box
Like, as mentioned above.
and the immediate accusation of ‘phobic’ the minute you have a different opinion from some people.

Ladyf Mon 08-Aug-22 07:01:04

'Going forward'. This was used constantly in the office where I worked before taking early retirement. Occasionally used at the beginning and end of a sentence. Grrrr!

Reach out
Literally
No problem

eazybee Mon 08-Aug-22 07:10:05

Veggie, as in I am a vegetarian;
veggies, as in I eat lots of vegetables.
Not too keen on 'lots of' either.
Disrespecting as in he is disrespecting me.

Good post

“Simply put…” don’t know why, but it irritates me. As several of you have said “you guys” as I find it patronising and I’m not a guy! “Super excited” another irritant. I could go on….

TwinLolly Mon 08-Aug-22 07:49:12

'Super' this and 'super' that, instead of 'extremely', 'very'....

Serendipity22 Mon 08-Aug-22 09:37:36

Blimey !!! Hahahahahaha...
We might as well keep our gobs shut !! Hahaha.

I cant say there are any particular words that bug me if i had to single 1 out I guess it would be "so".... as in "So the other day I went to ......"

It doesnt bug me big time but I have noticed my hearing tuning into the word.... ohh well, Im sure there will be countless others in a few months hahahaha.....

'Minor medals'
I noticed this recently when commentators are talking about the Commonwealth games; gold is prized, silver and bronze are minor medals. I find that an astonishing way of thinking about these achievements.

nanna8 Mon 08-Aug-22 09:59:22

Just thought of another one - intolerant. ?
