Tunisian crochet

Hi story, I have never mastered crochet! So when I saw your post I had a look at this series on youtube. The guy who introduces it has the most irritated giggle, but it does sound interesting. I might have a go.

I have tried crochet but for some reason never mastered it, although I do knit.

Will take a look, may try it again when we've finished this boring decorating.

Done lots of knitting and crochet but never tried Tunisian crochet.

I'm doing a Tunisian/afghan crochet square at the moment and I think you're right Storynanny, it's a bit thick for baby clothes. I also think it's not easy to do any shaping with it. I've never come across any useful patterns in it either. Best to stick with rectangles.

I am knitting squares for charity so may have another go at crochet, the squares always look nicer in crochet than knitting I think.

Tunisian crochet is incredibly easy. I learnt to do it when I was very young, because my mother was crafts-mad. She bought a large crochet hook in several parts that screwed together so that it was wide enough to crochet a rug. She saved up all of her old tights, and those of her friends, dyed them and cut them spirally and gave them to me to make rugs on which she and her friends would stand in their sculleries, to keep their feet warm. They paid me a shilling for each one. They would be dyed in mainly dark reds. The hook I used was a little thicker than the one in the video. I always meant to use several thicknesses of leftover wools to crochet a normal rug, but never got around to it.

Almost forgot - I used it to make bags with. Shopping bags mostly, but I did once make an evening bag, using that Twilley's stuff with the metallic threads in it.
