For longer than I care to remember I have been able to dash off daft rhymes, verse call it what you will.

In the past I have on occasion written them to order, best man's speeches, special birthdays, other events etc. (I remember a particularly poignant one for the funeral of a friends nephew)

Usually they are just standard verse stuff, but I did a couple of parodies of Shakespeare sonnets on the Pete's Sports Bar thread. I've also from time to time played around with alternative song lyrics (one on *Micelfs red ink thread) including a version of Waltzing Matilda for a work colleague who was emigrating and alternative words to Led Zeppelins "Stairway to Heaven" formed part of my work for English GCSE.

I have been able to produce something even if I don't know the person concerned, providing I'm given a bit of back ground and a couple of anecdotes.

So, if any Grans would like something written for whatever reason, I'd be happy to have a bash!

Wow jane some great ideas for names there! What about turning one of them around, "Rhymes for Reasons"?

Great minds, kitty great minds!

PPB will check that out, could be another good starting point.

Lost for words? I can help!

janerowena Mon 24-Mar-14 18:41:25

On here it may sound crass, but I went to the funeral of a friend a few weeks ago and his daughter read out a wonderful and very funny poem about him. Heaven only knows how you would advertise that - Poems for EVERY Occasion?

My father had a friend who had to give lots of after-dinner speeches, and he did many of them in rhyme. They are a great ice-breaker, I think it's a lovely idea.

Rhymes for all times?

Brainstorming session, people!

'If you can't say it - I can find the words for you'.

Reasons for Rhymes

Let me put words into your mouth.

In this day and age I think working for yourself is the best way to go, if you can.

Ooh River Cottage is a wedding venue and wasn't Jane Fearnley-Whittingstall the founder or one of the founders of Gransnet? Sounds a great idea, Good Luck. smile

kittylester Mon 24-Mar-14 17:42:15

Damn it, I thought that on my drive home this afternoon and you've beaten me to it!!

You could check out wedding fairs but I'm not sure how much they cost or wedding magazines?

Nfk if blogs get lots of people talking about them, and they are seen to be popular, then people advertise on them. Or you can use them as the basis for a book.

Go phoenix wine

NfkDumpling Mon 24-Mar-14 16:59:10

Good idea. You could start a blog about all of this! (How exactly do people make money from blogs?)

Anne58 Mon 24-Mar-14 16:56:06

Nonnie I think I would need to do a bit of research as to possible demand etc before taking that step.

HOWEVER thanks to some of the suggestions that have been made I've just had a bit of a light bulb moment! grin

WEDDING PLANNERS! I've just goggled it and there are quite a few in Devon & Cornwall, so I've already emailed one. I think I will put together an email and send it out to all of them. What do you think?

merlotgran Mon 24-Mar-14 16:40:22

Try your local florist, phoenix It's a competitive business so they might be interested in a service that the others don't offer.

Gagagran Mon 24-Mar-14 16:34:10

Are there any wedding venues around you Phoenix? It could be a service to offer there - wedding poems/readings etc. People do like personalised things so it might be a goer!

Nonnie Mon 24-Mar-14 16:15:58

Why not contact the Princes Trust as they now help people of all ages to start up their own business. I think you can attend their courses at no cost. Free advice from professionals can never be wasted.

I have just contacted "Not on the High Street" , will see if I get a response!

kittylester Mon 24-Mar-14 06:32:54

I was going to mention 'not on the high street' penguin. It appears to be our children's first choice for our presents!

Go for it Phoenix - lots of good ideas from people here! sunshine

penguinpaperback Mon 24-Mar-14 01:10:10

Easy and notonthehighstreet.

Last suggestion then I promise to shut up. grin Daughter and I went to a craft fair just before Christmas and there was a stall of printed cards with versus on the front and a couple were displayed in frames. Might be worth looking on the Etsy site?

Elegran Sun 23-Mar-14 23:42:41

Phoenix There are many gransnetters with facebook pages and twitter accounts who would promote youe project. You could get a mention on the local pages too.

Go for it.

I like "Odes to Go" and"Bespoke ballads" best.

Granny23 Sun 23-Mar-14 23:33:06

We searched high and low for a suitable verse for DGD (6) to read at her parent's wedding. Eventually, I wrote a personalised one myself and offered it with some trepidation but it was enthusiastically received and created a real 'Awaaa' moment during the ceremony. I also wrote DH's speech in rhyming couplet and that went down a storm at the reception.

You have a BIG writing talent Phoenix and can dash off masterpieces of comic verse at the drop of a hat. Rather trying to interest existing outlets to buy your stuff perhaps you should think of setting up a 'Customised speeches, poems and songs' website and sell direct to the public. I know there is a big demand out there for this type of bespoke service for Christenings or Baby Namings, Weddings, Funerals, Anniversaries, significant birthdays, which is currently not being met adequately. People will pay big money when they want something for a special occasion and if they wish to pass it off on the day as 'all their own work' so what!

penguinpaperback Sun 23-Mar-14 20:00:16

I really should read before posting. Was thinking of a balloon with a verse and perhaps not speeches from the best man but individual verses for bridesmaids, mother of the bride to be offered at the wedding outfitters.
I also thought of all those pet portraits services you now see, a verse to go with a portrait of your pet?

Anne58 Sun 23-Mar-14 20:00:04

Thanks penguin got to be worth a go, I wonder how they feel about articles covering underwear problems? (I've got one of those ready to go, articles that is, not underwear problems!)

I think I might also look into a little advertisement in the village newsletter, just to see if there is any interest.

Now then,

Odes to Go
Rachel's Rhymes
Poems Pronto
Verse & Worse
Bespoke Ballads

???????

penguinpaperback Sun 23-Mar-14 19:20:51

Just seen this,
www.silversurfers.com/silversurfers-members-write-to-win/
I wonder if surfers publish some winning writing might it be worth applying to be noticed?

penguinpaperback Sun 23-Mar-14 19:00:44

I was thinking of the Church newsletters we get delivered here, lots of local services, businesses advertise on the back pages. Also independent wedding outfitters, we have one shop that only sells celebration helium balloons and they are always busy! Party planners, church halls, a website. Good Luck.

chloe1984 Sun 23-Mar-14 18:39:22

Rhymes to order / verses for occasions/ poems for people/ personalise your greetings card /so why not put an notice on Gumtree perhaps in rhyme to advertise your talent get in quick for Mothers Day. Of course declare your earnings when you go to sign on. Once your talent has spread Nationwide you can link up with moonpig or similar to enhance their service. sunshine Would be a talking point at interviews and provide an interesting CV.

Ana Sun 23-Mar-14 18:01:30

I think it's probably a better course to bombard whatever newspaper, magazine etc. you can think of rather than just one or two, phoenix - although if by mail the postage could work out rather expensive! Just think how many rejection slips now-famous authors had before publication of their first novel.

rosequartz Sun 23-Mar-14 17:43:59

If you have a talent try to use it! There will be lots of other publications out there.

DD2 wrote articles for a local magazine when she went overseas. Although the magazine was free (promoting tourism) she got paid for the articles and her photography, plus expenses.

Charleygirl Sun 23-Mar-14 17:35:44

I have just googled in writing verses for cash and Hallmark do not acept freelance submissions but others do. There were some very good tips, too many to write here.

Anne58 Sun 23-Mar-14 17:35:22

My left handed scrawl doesn't lend itself to calligraphy kitty but no doubt I could either find someone who does or perhaps find some good fonts on line somewhere.

Charleygirl I'll have a quick google and see if I can find a contact us section for Hallmark.
