U- tube gives me an inferiority complex

I use it quite a bit - find it easier to watch someone, even if I have to watch it a few (loads) of times. Learnt how to reupholster dining chairs - saved quite a lot on that, plus got the look that I wanted. Bought the fabric on ebay - excellent quality too, did 6 chairs for less than the price I was quoted for one!

Telly that's great! I went to an upholstery evening class to learn how to restore an Edwardian chair. I needed a lot of help and was in awe of the teacher's skill. All those springs and webbing. You had to be strong.
It made me appreciate the craft.

My son just showed me the other day how to slow the videos on You Tube down. I hadn't known such a thing was possible and I always paused the videos and used rewind.

For those who have used You Tube for years and like me were oblivious... you go into the settings wheel on the video and slow it down to the desired speed.

I have managed to learn things from YouTube knitting tutorials - how to mattress stitch, for instance, and how to graft two pieces together. But I would have to watch again because I've forgotten how to graft, it's so long since I used it.
The ones that make me laugh are the ones posted on FB, showing you how to do nifty things to personalise jumpers, cookery tips and recipes - they go at the speed of light (well nearly) and are impossible to follow!

I had priced up the stuff and made some measurements. Scary!

I know I wouldn't have been able to do any of it!

I have acted as plumber's mate to DH when he did our bathroom!
But I was assigned the job of chief grouter.

It is a strange thing to bother to do, that is make a YouTube video. ( showing my age ). Must admit they are often very useful for all sorts of skills.

However when I was trying to make something crafty for a Christmas present. The woman showing me how to create my masterpiece was far less artistic than me, even.
She seemed to have copied an American youtuber. I suppose they get money through advertising, or is it just a glorified selfie?

I'm not sure how or if they make money, LullyDully but I presume they must, or perhaps be sponsored.

I think some are experts or at least very proficient at their craft and it can be very helpful to follow an actual demonstration rather than reading a book - they must reach a wider audience too.

LullyDully I agree it seems an odd thing to do. The knitting one was by a very fast American tutor.
Probably the younger generation started it with selfies of dance moves/ songs, recipes etc

I find it very useful. If I didn't think someone on Youtube could do something better than I could and that I would learn from it, I wouldn't be watching it!

Some of them make a lot of money ie Joe Suggs and his sister Zoella. In fact a few years ago in the year book produced by the primary school children in GC school, most of them wanted to be YouTubers when they grew up. Money is made from advertising or sponsorship which is why they want you to like them, share etc. to increase the views. Of course most don't make it, but that's life.

I use youtube a lot, mainly music, and looking at border collies.
But I've also used it to find out how to do something .
eg how to trap feral cats, how to get rid of a pampas grass plant etc.

I do lots of different crafts but all attempts at crochet have ended in tears... I resolved that this would be the year I'd finally crack it so bought a book last week and studied that, then looked for tutorials on YouTube. After watching lots of them I finally realised that what UK tutors call double crochet is referred to by US tutors as single crochet (or something like that!). This caused me much grief and head-scratching. So now I'm sticking to UK demos and am very slowly making progress and have managed a tiny square without too many mistakes. I have found that some of the tutors are excellent and others seem to have forgotten that complete beginners are not familiar with the technical lingo. And yes, Grammaretto I also have to watch each one 50 times and last night was on the verge of giving up again but will be having another bash at it tonight! They make it look so easy! Grrrr....
