Twiddle muffs - ideas for texture?

Once I've finished my pirate I have a stack of different coloured yarns to use up so I thought I'd make some twiddle muffs, but yarns are nearly all just DK.

Have any of you more accomplished knitters ideas for reasonably easy stitches to add texture? I think there's one where you wind the yarn 3 times round the needle to make loops, but can't remember where I saw it - can anyone fill me in/suggest anything else?

I just wish I'd known about these when my mother had dementia for so many years. Too late for her now, but it'd be nice to use my stash for others with this horrible disease.

Many of the twiddle muffs made for hospitals are not used because they are unsafe. May I suggest that you join 'Handmade for Dementia' on Facebook. There are some strict guidelines but these are for safety reasons. There are patterns for safe twiddles and the group makes cannula sleeves to donate to local hospitals. People with dementia often pull out their cannula and the sleeves distract them, saving the patient from distress and the NHS money for another cannula.

I knit these muffs and have personal experience of the calming effect they have on sufferers. To add texture I often incorporate the bobble stitch/ blackberry stitch and others that are part of Aran knitting. As these are part of the muff they cannot be pulled off. I follow the guidelines as above and our local care home is always grateful for donations.

It's a muff with different textures for people suffering from dementia to hold and "twiddle" with.
