Inspired by all of the knitting ladies here

I’ve been reading this section for a while in lockdown. I’m new to gransnet. My daughter is having her first baby in the summer and after not knitting for over 38 years, I’m well on the way to knitting a baby blanket. Nothing fancy, just plain and Pearl, but I’m using different colours and squares so I’m amazed at how it’s looking. It’s given me real pleasure and something to focus on during lockdown. I start at 4pm, one eye on Midsomer Murders, and knit until I go to bed.
So all you ladies who talk about their stashes...you’ve all inspired me!

Congratulations on both the baby and your blanket?

I find knitting a great hobby/pastime or whatever it is. It keeps me busy, either knitting one project or planning the next, and there is something to show for all the work at the end. Not unlike bringing up babies, in many ways wink.

Enjoy your grandbaby and your new hobby.

Forsythia-congrats on both counts. Now you’ve got the knitting bug I foresee a very well dressed babysmile

How lovely Forsythia!. Can you post any pictures? I'm sure we'd all love to see what you've done!

I an not a knitter but I love to see babies in hand knitted clothes they are so much nicer than shop bought

Witzend Wed 10-Feb-21 10:49:33

I’m sure the blanket will be lovely! Very exciting to have the first grandchild on the way!
I’d hardly knitted for ages until Gdd1 was on the way (she’s coming up to 6 now) when I made a blanket in ‘unisex’ colours, since they’d chosen not to be told.

I was pleased to see it still being used for Gdc 3, who arrived last January.
Since then I’ve made so many things, but not many jumpers or cardigans, since the other granny is rather better at those and makes plenty for them.

TBH I think I’d have gone a bit bonkers during lockdowns without knitting - I made a lot of Christmassy things for Gdcs and their school fair raffles - which went ahead anyway online.

That’s great. I can’t knit but I do crochet. A secondary occupation to enjoying an audio book or watching TV. My dogs have the best dog blankets.

Witzend Wed 10-Feb-21 10:56:48

@Rosalyn69, I’m finding the stashbuster scarf (posted about it recently) great for TV knitting - can manage to watch subtitled Spiral without going wrong - even I would be hard put to go wrong on all-garter stitch rows of 280 sts!

Thank you all. I’m just settling down to today’s knitting. I’m doing squares for the blanket in pastel shades which I’ll sew together when I’ve done enough. Will be awhile yet ?

I love knitting again for the last few years since having grandchildren

I have just done a Humpty Dumpty jumper which I did for her dad when he was small. Really pleased with it

Rosalyn 69 I would love to learn to crochet

Rosie51 Sat 13-Feb-21 12:40:48

SisterAct is that the same Humpty Dumpty jumper I made for my boys I wonder? Humpty had lightly padded legs sewn on the front and had fallen off the wall just legs showing on the back. Everybody loved it smile Not sure I've explained it that well!

We also have a new grandchild due in a few weeks, I am knitting a blanket in squares seeing how many different stitches I can use, all the same colour. Tension is proving problematical though!

Gwyneth Sat 13-Feb-21 12:53:42

I’ve also just started knitting a blanket in squares. Could anyone advise me on the best stitch to use when I start sewing it together please. Thanks

Congratulations Forsythia I've started knitting again during this last lockdown, making socks - at least one of which has been thrown across the room with a few choice words! However, patience, patience, patience - I'm getting there. Bet your blanket looks fab.

Lilypops Sat 13-Feb-21 22:35:26

Hi Gwyneth , I have done these blankets in squares and I find just putting two at a time edges together and doing a simple double crochet along the edges through the two squares , repeat with another two until you have edged them all together, pick out one of the colours in the squares , it makes a nice raised edge , white always looks nice, Hope that’s clear to you. Good luck ,

Hello and well done! I've just got the knitting bug again after a break of many years. Just finishing off a cardigan, and have two lots of wool waiting for a sweater and another cardigan. It keeps my hands and mind busy and I am really enjoying it.
The only drawback is that I get emails every day with new patterns and ideas for new projects and I am easily seduced; before I know it I've downloaded another pattern and ordered more wool!

Gwyneth Sat 13-Feb-21 23:03:55

Will do Lilypops but don’t hold your breath only on second square not the fastest of knitters!!! Thanks again.

I too have picked up knitting needles after so many years....baby knits for son now 40 years old. What a joy. When I look back I never had the time to indulge since, as two beautiful little girls arrived not long after and my career eventually resumed.

At the moment two scarves, hats, a snowman.....eeek and a snood. Enjoying keeping busy when sitting without guilt. Long may my knitting continue.

Does anyone know where I can buy the faux fur pom-poms for knitted hats. , I have seen some on Amazon but they are in packs of lots. , I only want a couple and I don’t want to wait ages for them to come from China. TIA,
